replace device procedure error?

I carefully followed the instructions below (from the wiki) but ended having a ton of "not specified" in my programs (20 of them) that I had to manually change after.

 

To confirm what I did, I first replaced references to what is my older (pre i2cs) IO Linc with the name of a newly purchased newly added IO Linc (presumably i2cs?) in my programs, then saving all my programs, then removing the (old) device from its folder and doing the "replace with" from old device name to new device, which had as its name its insteon address.

 

Is the documentation wrong? is there a bug? did I just completely blow it and didn't realize it?

 

I would also mention that the admin console closed on me at the end, which I don't remember from last time I did this. Looking at the last run time, ISY did NOT reboot (so why did the console close?).

 

 

The Process of Replacing a Device

 

Use the "Logon to My INSTEON ISY Now!" weblink, enter your user name and password when prompted to get logged in.

First add a device that will be the new device.

Both devices have to be the same type of device in order for the new device to be displayed in the replace menu.

If the device is used in any programs:

Click on the Program Details tab.

Use Find/Replace to Replace in All Programs the old device with the new device.

Be sure to Save your program changes.

Under the "Main Tab" expand the Tree "Network --> My Lighting -->" and right click the device that is being replaced.

The device must be removed from any folder it is in.

Select the new device that was added in the earlier step to start the process.

 

Also, as was the case when I moved to 3.3.4, when I checked "set options" the new IO Linc showed "latching" but when I queried it it changed to "momentary" and I had to select latching again.

 

The latter happened before (complete with momentary behavior rather than latching) but the affected IO lincs where pre-i2CS. viewtopic.php?f=25&t=9834&p=75583p75583

The new replacement device is added under some temp device name that will be deleted after the Replace. After the new device is added right click the old node and select Replace xxxx with .... which will list all the potential Replace candidates which should include the new device added under the temp name. The Replace xxxx with .... function changes the Insteon address of the existing old node to the new device Insteon address, keeping the old node name in tack, so Scenes and Programs require no changes.

 

The new temp device is deleted automatically by the Replace function. The old node Insteon address is not referenced on the powerline on the assumption it is defective and physically replaced by the new device.

 

EDIT: the Admin Console has to be cycled so that two devices (old and new) are not listed with the same Insteon address. Once the Admin Console is restarted the old node will have the new device Insteon address and the duplicate will be gone.

So one is NOT supposed to "Use Find/Replace to Replace in All Programs the old device with the new device"? Can I humbly request that the step be taken out of the manual? I'll make a note to myself but it might save others some grief. This has happened to me before and I thought it was because I didn't follow the instructions but I guess I had and just didn't check or ask anyone.

Where on the Wiki did you find those instructions? It sounds like a valid manual procedure for replacing a device, just not built around the current Replace xxxxx with ..... function which does all the heavy lifting automatically.

I just ran a Replace xxxx with .... function on 3.3.7 to be sure nothing had changed as it had been a few images since I used that function to replace one of my KPLs. The Replace xxxxx with ..... did all the changes to the existing old node as expected. All Program references using the old node name still exist and now issue commands against the new Insteon address. All the Scenes that had link records with the old node device Insteon address were updated with the new Insteon address. The new device with a temp name is gone when the Admin Console was restarted. The Replace xxxx with .... popup does warn the Admin Console will be shut down.

 

Perhaps there was an old Replace function at one time that required all that manual device name find/replace activity. Not needed now with the current Replace xxxx with ..... function.
