  1. That is partially incorrect. You can trigger lights based on the status of the activity as well as the status of device states. For example, depending on the time, turning off my system will trigger my goodnight scene (room dependent). Starting different activities will set the accent lights to the correct color as well overhead lights. If I'm watching a movie and my DVR is paused (yes I still prefer hard disks), the room lights will dim on slightly and the hall lights will come on. If i trigger my movie scene, my air purifier will turn off (or simply not run). For anything else, I've found voice to be much easier than nondescript buttons The harmony buttons won't work as already stated but i never wanted to use them anyway. It's not intuitive (needing to remember buttons for something not often done) nor do guests understand how they work.
  2. Zwave has self healing properties so routing can improve over time
  3. You would use programs to accomplish what you want. It comes down to your imagination and what you are trying to accomplish
  4. For that comment, I got you when it happens. ?
  5. Sheldon from Big Bang Theory.
  6. I don't foresee any installer worth something installing a whole home setup with wifi based switches/dimmers. There may be specific use cases for a couple of switches but not an investment level installation. Wifi will be relegated to those looking for cheap devices for specific needs or unsuspecting consumers
  7. The question goes Ina circle every few days. No one can answer what to use. I don't see things with IOP as being insteon vs zwave, vs wifi, vs hue. etc. I see it as using the best devices for any given situation at that moment. If he uses the RA3 processor, he'll need to use the new API period. If he wants ra2 integrated with IOP then he needs to use the Ra2 processor. If IOP did support Ra3, I'd still use zwave outlets and sensors with the system along with my hue bulbs. I may switch my master bathroom sensor out to their 360 version but for the most part, I don't need everything to come from them. The best system for your friend still comes down to his needs. While i love supporting udi and they'll always be my first choice, my recommendation is still based on a person's needs. Even with my company, now that ra3 is out, I'll probably use them more than i do C4. The reason being, most clients only need what Ra3 offers. The fact that i can add it to a C4 system is bonus should their needs ever change. Reality is, most do not want to pay for whole house automation not desire complicated programming. They want app and voice control mixed with a few timers. Ra3 allows me to give them what they desire. If IOP supports it then there's a low cost application for clients as well to add more smarts to the system vs overpaying for C4 just for a little extra logic
  8. Reading this gave me a headache. Not because the information isn't valuable, but due to the fact that it's so much work for so very little return. Alot of that is probably too techie in installation and in looks for most people on here. Reading it makes me imagine a house built by a young Sheldon ?
  9. Thats good. Just wondering since the slowness was an issue with the older firmware. Generally, distance doesnt cause a few second delay since the signal is either getting there or not. If you're getting error codes then that would imply an issue but without that, im curious as to why its so slow as well.
  10. Do you have the latest firmware on your USB dongle
  11. It would be helpful if you stated the devices you are using along with the firmware and UI. The ISY and Polisy supports many types of devices which can have many different ways to troubleshoot
  12. The only thing I can say is buy additional devices as they become available. That way you can replace devices down the road should something happen. Its not like your system will suddenly fail should they cease to exist. In 5-10 years, your system would be ripe for upgrading anyway with advancements. Outside of Insteon, there isnt anything worth using for lighting in the low cost consumer space in regards to my needs. Id probably switch over to hue bulbs w/polisy in the spaces I really need automation from, and not worry about the rest of the house that we dont use. If you really take the time to understand the different technologies out there, you can still come up with novel ways of achieving the results you're looking for.
  13. Thats because they arent making it at this time. Doesnt mean its a permanent thing. Insteon still has the right to bring it back. If you were to call insteon supprt, theyd say the same thing
  14. Hell, I'm still waiting on stereo equipment from October. I didn't get my Sonos amps until January and i ordered them back in September. People are so focused on 1 thing they can't see the forests through the trees.
  15. The best system depends on one's needs and desires. I go into more details with my clients to install the right system for them but that's because they're paying for it. In general, I look for looks, performance, scalability, flexibility, ease of use, and servicing. Price is a factor as well. My best advice would be to try out different things to see what fits your lifestyle. There are no hard and fast rules to this.
  16. Who said they're shuttering. Everything about insteon has been pure speculation. Look at many of the other 100+ threads with similar topics of yours, you'll see this has been an ongoing theme for over a year. Maybe they'll eventually shut down but for now they're still in business so no announcements need to be made. They do have a new nokia line that they've stated will be separate from insteon. They may change that in the future but for now that's their decision. Everything we say here is pure speculation
  17. Voice control is no longer an option piece. Everyone supports it now.
  18. No formal statement on needing a plm? One has always been needed since it's inception. They've been clear about that from the beginning. If you want to avoid a controller then the isy isn't for you since it's a controller. They would leave you with using only wifi based devices. Most pro level systems are quite powerful. You get what you saw due to most consumers not knowing what they want and the need to manage and troubleshoot things when something goes wrong. The more complicated a system the more that can go wrong. Great for a DIYer with nothing to lose but bad for business
  19. The problem isnt bpwwer not wanting to create a nodeserver. It's lutron releasing the API for that to happen. Michel has stated a few times they are working on getting access
  20. Options! Not everyone wants to use the portal. There are those with the knowledge, skill, resources, etc. to create and manage their own certificates. For them, they want everything self enclosed. Using the portal would defeat that. For the majority of users however, the portal is a welcome expense.
  21. How did you solve the problem for future users
  22. Physically rewire it
  23. See Kasa Nodeserver subforum for more information about Kasa devices.
  24. Itll work since they are 2 separate systems. Long term, you're probably adding more work to yourself when it comes to completing everything.
  25. But then people would have to read instructions ?
