  1. A simple Google search would reveal why. You'll see more people who've gone from insteon/zwave singing it's praises and wondering why they waited so long. The lack of bad reviews is also telling. The overall lack of complaints is telling to. Some of that comes from installers doing the installation vs DIYers who may cut corners through ignorance or lack of skill. However, there's still a huge difference in the experience itself overall. When set up properly it simply works. It's not about using plain old wifi but the strength of connection between controller and devices. This is in addition to how well devices do their primary function which is control lights. It just comes down to what a person desires. Some people just want things to work. They don't care about how it looks or performs as long as it does the job. In this case Lutron probably isn't worth the money. For those who want the best experience possible, then Lutron would be a great way to go for them
  2. Unfortunately that's how you update parameters
  3. Since we don't know what the device is, we can't say if it's a bug or not. I'd remove the device and upgrade to 5.3.4 (since no one will fix an old firmware). Once upgraded, make sure you clear your Java cache and use the launcher from the 5.3.4 page. Double check to make sure that your firmware and UI matches then re-add the device.
  4. Caseta is its own system. It has its own hub just like Ra2 does. It cannot be upgraded to work with Ra2 nor Ra3. I dont know what Simplextech stated but generally those who are in this as a business try to push people towards what will fit their budget and needs. For example, a person with a 1200sq ft home and a small budget can probably get away with using Caseta, whereas someone with a 5k sq ft home would need Ra2 Im assuming his response was geared towards those reasons.
  5. Caseta is not ra2 and there is no upgrade to anything else from it. For Caseta, you need the caseta hub. Ditto for ra2 and 3 (though Ra3 hub can control Ra2). You need the course to unlock the software. Unless you're a dealer or know someone willing to sell them to you, you'll pay full price for devices Polisy works with ra2 currently but not ra3 and it is unknown when.
  6. The best system depends on his needs and wants. What does he value? Looks, performance, flexibility, etc. Budgetary concerns also comes into play as does investment in time. Those questions will help guide in towards making the right choice. I'd tell him to hold off for now. With everything being in short supply, it'll be better for him to wait and see how things play out. He doesn't want to jump too quickly only for stuff to be out of stock or overpaying trying to get devices from different sources. IMO, insteon is a non starter even if it makes a come back since UDI has made it clear they've washed their hands of them. At this juncture, I wouldn't use their old product line anyway. My focus would be on product lines that are made specifically for led bulbs (allows low end trim to be set) whether it's zwave, lutron, or something else. If finances aren't an issue, I'd shoot for Ra3 if he can wait. Ra2 if he really needs to do something now. He would not need a PLM at all unless he was using insteon. I choose ra3 (if he's willing to take a wait and see approach) only because Ra3 looks much much better than ra2 switches and it's Lutron's future even if the future is not arriving for the next couple of years overall. Once he's actually ready to buy, he can use what's available in regards to Ra2, Ra3, Or something else.
  7. You can always run your isy I'm tandem with polisy so that you have ir control. Harmony hub based remotes can still be easily found as well allowing you to use the Harmony nodeserver to accomplish the same thing
  8. What is the firmware AND UI of your isy? Did you follow the steps to get it added? Click on the nodeserver in the store for directions
  9. What model is showing in your admin console? Also what is your ISY firmware AND UI
  10. Some can but not all. Unfortunately it depends on make, model, and firmware the switch has along with your firmware/UI... Generally devices that are capable of being scene controllers can be set up this way. Otherwise you'd need programs to link them together
  11. Leviton has many different switch options so your models along with Isy firmware and UI would be welcomed so we could assist
  12. All of that would be nice but I'm not seeing that happen at any level. At least when it comes to DIY solutions. There's simply no money in trying to create a protocol from scratch and sell it at a low price for a decent profit and existing (popular) solutions aren't capable of that at a high level the way insteon is.
  13. Approval by the FDA has absolutely nothing to due with liability and lawsuits. If that was the case, most of all medical lawsuits wouldnt exist. The equipment used can and will become part of the case.
  14. We can go back and forth but unless it's done (or you speak to a lawyer which I've done), it's a moot point. If you feel you're correct, why don't you pursue it? You'd make a lot of money from reselling your own design.
  15. You're right, you're not a lawyer but do you have one on retainer? If so, you should probably ask them. Feel free to use mine if you don't know one. Her name is Faith Fox. I can dm you her info if you need it. I'm glad you bought up medical reprocessing. The key word is here "reprocessing" which is not what we were talking about. Nice try though. 2 completely different situations and subjects. Had you or upstate said refurbish old units to resell, I'd completely agree.but you didn't. His idea was to build new ones and use old chips from bad units. It is completely legal to refurbish equipment. However, where it crosses the line is them taking those same parts, making their own chassis and rebranding it. That would then become illegal and subject them to lawsuits. While I may not be an Electronics design engineer, I was an O.R nurse in my younger years and my wife is a physician. In addition, a friend of mine owns a company that does exactly as you say. His company is called US Medical Systems based out of Ft. Mill, SC. US healthcare having alot of money isn't why reselling doesn't happen more often here. Hospitals and doctors offices are like any other business in that they generally look for the cheapest cost like any other business (unless a physician or surgeon wants something specific... especially surgeons). It's the legalities associated with refurbished equipment and the liabilities behind it. Legally, it's what law requires locally to federal in regards to the use/re-use of medical equipment. Liability wise, it's about what happens should something go wrong. With lawsuits, no one is about to take a chance on a 3rd party refurbished infusion pump. Saving a couple grand isn't worth the millions a single lawsuit could bring due to giving someone the incorrect dosage of something. You feel having a schematic for something makes it legal which it does not. The legalities start where the permission ends. You even stated yourself, the end goal was to sell their ICs to the companies making plms. That's where the permission comes into play. Just like UDI tried to do, they still needed to purchase the chips from insteon...Since they didn't get permission, they could not sell their creation.. Just because some companies operate their businesses certain ways does not mean their way is open for every business. Yes Arduino allows you to build your own cpu. But try reselling it and calling it an Arduino. See how quickly you get a letter in the mail. It comes down to the permissions given. If you think a 15 year old schematic of a chassis gives you permission to do as you state, why don't you? You'd make a lot of money.
  16. Yes they did..WITH PERMISSION and with the understanding that they would be selling the chips to them not UDI buying old units to pull chips from. That is the key where you go from a completely legal act to an illegal one that could potentially cost you millions.
  17. That's completely different. The surpreme court already ruled that selling a purchased item does not infringe on any patents. Buying a PLM, taking the chip out of it and reselling it as your own module does infringe on copyright law. Using your analogy, taking that same Toyota with a new muffler and trying to resell it by calling it Eleanor will cost you. IP laws are very clear on the matter. A simple 2 minute search can educate you (or a lawyer on retainer)
  18. If that was the case, don't you think UDI would have done so with their own PLM? Building an assembly and buying chips directly from them to sell (with permission) isn't the same as buying old parts and reselling with your own assembly (without permission). Using your logic, I can buy a bottle of head & shoulders, put it in my own container and resell as my own product. As I said before, go for it and try to sell without permission.
  19. I'm not going to debate you. A 5 minute google search will show how wrong you are. Any lawyer will tell you about copyright law. But again- feel free to go for it.
  20. If you think so, go right ahead. Let us know how that works out for you.
  21. You would simply use ir. Program your denon to the hub and control it. Depending on what you're trying to accomplish that would meet your needs with the least amount of work.
  22. That is blatantly incorrect. You would clearly be violating patent and copyright law in doing so. Granted, if you did it for yourself only, they would never know. Should you attempt to sell any, you would be in violation That would be like me saying i could get away with buying a bunch of iphones, pulling their chips out and making my own phone with them.
  23. Path of least resistance would be to get a Harmony hub/remote off eBay and use the Harmony nodeserver

    Happy 2022

Happy New Years to you as well. May the new years bring you happiness, more wisdom than you admit to, and more sparring opportunities. ?
  25. Try removing both devices from the scene. Add the zwave device first, configure, and then re-add sensor
