    Thread protocol

What is it that you hope to accomplish with thread? Its been around for about 7 years or so with minimal impact and a small number of supported devices. When it comes to automation, Matter would mean more than thread by itself. But then again, it remains to be seen if matter really matters
  2. I actually recommend that you DO NOT use button groupings. This happens at the device level and the Isy is unaware of the status. If your scenes are set up correctly, you won't need them. I don't use non toggle mode. Everything is toggle. That way when you switch to one it automatically will turn the other off. You can also turn the button that's on off which will stop that particular process. Doing it this way means you don't need a separate off button for your scenes. If you do desire a separate off, you can still set it up the same way and then make a non toggle off scene with fanlinc and all buttons in it to turn off. Your scenes look correct as far as the controllers go. Make sure the Scene itself is configured the same way. (Click on the scene and verify links)
  3. Just because you never had problems with 3 installs doesn't mean others don't have issues. Plenty of people on here can attest to the multitude of folks who had had issues from importing. I am a professional and I factory reset everything. Even with Control 4. While most here may be what you call weekend warriors, many of them probably know more than many installers and can become one themselves if they felt inclined to. It's funny you try to call out folks like you're a big shot yet talking about 3 installs. I'd trust the veterans who has been here for years with thousands of posts over your 3 months and 25 posts.... Most which do not offer any help at all. The fact you're talking about other tools for the hub for someone MOVING AWAY from the hub already shows your lack of understanding. That's like me trying to fix a car after i trade it in. Why bother! Next, you feel it's easier to install strange software on his computer to manage something the Isy can already do. In the time it takes to download, figure it out, etc. He could've simply factory reset his devices and added them to the Isy and start working. Let's break this down. He'll ssh into the hub (a device he doesn't want to use), for some unknown reason, download software to manage his links, to the still need to add his devices to the isy. How much sense does that make? Yet, you want to question the credentials of those who has been in the trenches for years seeing what people have been going through and helping solve those problems. Before you start telling veterans what they don't know and newbies what they should do, maybe you should take the time to learn the product. The hub link resides in the devices whether the hub is on or not. This applies to ALL insteon devices. Next, factory resetting the hub does not remove it's link. They'd have to remove the device from the hub to remove it's link. Sure a tool could do that but what's faster? Factory resetting a device, going through the remove process or using some tool for link management? One thing i learned in the military and kept with me over the years is the kiss method (keep it simple stupid). Sometimes the simplest method is the best. No one started out telling the op to factory reset everything. Read for context and comprehension before saying something. I told him to factory reset the device and then see what happens. He started clean on his own and now has things running the way he wanted. Only when he said he imported did i say a factory reset on everything would have been said. The fact is he had 1 issue now. Who's to say there wouldn't be others later? Having best practices is important in this game. Whether it's factory resetting devices to get rid of links that may still exist to keeping spread sheets or backups, we all have our processes that we've found allow us to use the Isy with zero issues. Trying to think you know more than everyone here for whatever reason (and then proceeding to make zero sense) only serves to make others blow back on you regardless of how helpful you may think you are being.
  4. Upnp is turned off on your router which is why it doesn't work. Personally, I wouldn't recommend using that option. My first choice would be to use the portal. Go to help>purchase modules and buy a portal subscription. Once done and enabled on your isy, you'll have remote access. The second would be to set a port forwarding rule. Again, not something I'd recommend but it's more secure than enabling upnp.
  5. I still have vinyl and use it from time to time. I prefer it's sound over now. I'm not surprised at that. CD sales have been dropping faster than DVD/blu-ray/4k media since streaming has taken over
  6. I'm speaking specifically to the masses not my client base I go for when I talk about low cost of entry. Radio Ra is somewhat geared towards the masses with access but caters to those with the finances and desire to have a high quality system. You keep talking about your needs- but you aren't the customer base these companies are going for. Whether it's tapes vs streaming or prosumers/techie vs mass use, you're getting left behind scrounging to find the things you desire all while everything else is changing around you. But, since you're so caught up in the old ways, you can't see how the new not only replicates what you currently have but makes it infinitely better.
  7. Ra2 select has inline modules that can potentially be used. They aren't small like micro modules though
  8. Of course that's what companies are doing. There's absolutely zero benefit to catering to advanced users. I was once the same way with my company. I wanted to be that one stop shop that did everything and give the world. While it worked for me for a time, my ROI was extremely low. The amount of money I made for the time and effort put in wasn't worth it. Once I simplified things (going to higher end stuff helped as well), not only did I gain more clients, my income went up exponentially. The same applies to manufacturers of devices. The can spend heavily on R&D trying to keep advanced users happy only to sell a few products they develop, or they can focus on easy to make low cost devices. Take insteon. People harp on how much they used to have not realizing a lot of those products sat around the warehouse for years. There were times they'd have to write stuff off and remake just so the factory would still make the products for them at a certain price. Your analogy about tapes says alot and goes to why you have a hard time seeing/understanding the movement of companies catering to the masses. Most people don't want a large collection of tapes sitting around. They can store thousands of songs in the cloud (or hard drive) for consumption whenever and wherever they are. Listening to a song in order like a tape does is irrelevant as the ability to hear a variety of music easily makes more sense. Not only that, playlists still allows them to get the benefits that you talk about. All without spending countless hours recording and dubbing onto a tape, having to take up space for storage or dig through a storage cabinet looking for that 1 song you're in the mood for. The same applies for the masses. Low cost entry into this world without having to invest countless hours simply to learn a system and what devices can do. In half the time it takes to set up polisy and set a timer to turn a light on/off, a person can install a switch, connect to its app and be up and running with Alexa (and set a schedule).
  9. Insteon itself is. I've already stated the design is long in the tooth. Part of the reason I stopped using it over a year ago and was already planning on C4 in our new home. All of their issues were bought on themselves not necessarily society moving on. Them choosing not to support Isy and other controllers is a business decision they made. Inovelli themselves are moving on from this crowd for a reason. If you look across the landscape, outside of a few companies most have abandoned prosumers and hobbyists. People here just don't realize it yet
  10. 1) you can still buy portable CD players so that's not saying much. The point is, society as a whole has moved past X10. It being around only means there's a segment of society that refuses to let go for a variety of reasons. 2) I don't put tape on my light switches. Read for context not argument. The point I was making is that some people are ok with covering switches with tape or installing cheap feeling ugly switches because quality doesn't matter to them. For others looks and details do matter. 3) lutron does more than you realize. You should try using it and familiarize yourself with it before you make statements. Compared to the Isy or systems like it, it's definitely limiting. However, it wasn't designed to be an advanced system. It does exactly what it's supposed to do. The problem comes from those who buy it with certain expectations. If i go out and buy a Chromebook to do 4k video editing and play high end games, is it the chromebook's fault when it struggles? No, I didn't get the right system for what I was trying to do. Ra was designed to give what most homeowners want. A way to control their home easily and reliably while looking good doing so. For those who want more, they made it so that it can be integrated with systems that are more capable so people can achieve what their looking for. The same applies with zwave. You have wink and smart things for people who want control and timers. Yet the devices can be integrated with other controllers for those who want more capabilities. 4) I spoke specifically about Sunnata and Ra3 for a reason. I'm not a fan of maestro devices. With that said, the system itself is still rock solid regardless of how one feels about the rest.
  11. That sounds ridiculous. For starters, anything is better than X10. If x10 was so great, everyone would be clamoring for it. Just because you haven't taken the time to research it doesn't mean others haven't. Lutron's name speaks for itself. Most people know the name and equate it with quality and luxury which is what those who want to use it are going for. Not everyone wants tape over their light switches or desire to use low quality stuff to control their home. Some want quality and luxury and are willing to pay for it. A person doesn't have to know technical details about a system to want to use it- they just have to be able to read. One only has to do a quick Google search to see the plethora of complaints when it comes to Zwave, insteon, X10, wifi, and so forth in regards to reliability....but not Lutron. Lutron complaints are more about costs and limitations. Even those who once used insteon or zwave and upgraded talk about how much better a system it is. I don't care how technical a person is, what people read online is what can make or break a system. The fact that anyone can install it (unlike C4, Crestron, homeworks, and Savant) makes Lutron Ra systems even more appealing. I can't speak for others but I'm more excited about Lutron now due to the look and feel of the Sunnata line. With Ra3, they now have a system out that looks the part and based on their history, I trust will continue the tradition of being rock solid. Business wise, I like that i can use the regular sunnata line in areas home owners may not want to control to ensure everything looks the same. This saves them money since they don't have to pay top dollar for the switch and programming while i make a little extra that i wouldn't have made (if they didn't do the whole home) for the devices and installation. Grab a sunnata dimmer from home Depot and see for yourself. You'll see how much better at dimming it is over anything insteon or zwave has. See for yourself how quiet the paddle is when triggered and how elegant the whole thing feels to the touch. That, along with their reputation is why people are excited.
  12. Lutron doesn't use wifi. They use their proprietary clear connect Rf. Ra2 is type A and Ra3 is type X. I know there are nodeservers for Caseta and Ra2. I'm sure one will come for RA3 but lutron hasn't released anything for developers yet. I know one of the nodeservers support lutron's leap but not sure if that would allow Ra3 to be used at this time.
  13. You are incorrect. The 500 board on the latest firmwares does support multi channel devices. It has for a few years now. Most likely, the device either requires custom coding in order to work or parameter changes. With that said, it should join regardless. What process did you use to get it to join
  14. Make sure you move it to Ra3. Its only a few weeks away
  15. Not much UDI can do. I doubt the plm can be reversed engineered and bought to market without infringing on insteon patents and copyrights. I think the most anyone can do is start looking at other alternatives to replace their system with should theirs fail/start failing so they arent doing last minute scrambling should the worse come to fruition (I hope soon so we can move on)
  16. You should've created their Polisy marketing page
  17. Udi products do not use log4shell
  18. Experience is the best teacher. It's been said countless times on these forums not to take shortcuts as it often ends badly. This is shown often with those who import their previous setups from other controllers. Sometimes you cant say anything. You just gotta let them fail.
  19. Not necessarily on most points. The additional range will help in situations of open floor plans and open air. Even with Power G wireless alarm sensors, i've seen people need repeaters in 4000 square foot homes due to the sensors not being able to reach the panel. It'll still come down to what it always does. The environment its used in. Zwave's direct association is a joke. Max is 4-5 devices depending on whats used. Also must be at the same security level. Devices turned on via associations also do not report status to the hub. Depending on programming, this could limit a person. Its fine for multiway setups such as hallways but definitely not a whole house solution the way insteon is. Comparing zwave to C4 and Radio Ra is like comparing a Honda to a Bentley. They do the same thing- Lutron and C4 just looks and works a hell of alot better and smoother in action. Here's where you should brush up on your knowledge. Depending on what you call niche devices, you can have the same with Ra and C4. Not only can you add zwave devices to a C4 controller (has a zwave module), if you look at what C4 CAN integrate with, you'd realize its zwave who's extremely limited. The 3rd party drivers allows you to integrate with pool controllers, Cameras, alarm systems (Elk, DSC, Qolsys, etc), along with the obvious stuff such as access control and AV. Due to the nature of the product, Ra really shouldnt be included in any automation discussions. Ra was designed to be a lighting and shade control system. Not necessarily an automation system. Lutron made it so that it can easily integrate with other stuff for those who desire automation. Since Ra does work with C4, by extension, you have the same capabilities as C4. Most companies do not cater to complex installations. Even with zwave, most company's have the same exact product line. A dimmer, a relay switch, plug in modules, and sensors. There are a couple of companies with niche devices as well such as aeotech and Fibaro. When I look at the number of niche product lines out there with zwave, its much smaller than it used to be and will probably shrink even more over time.
  20. If you feel that's all you need, why not go for it?
  21. Did you see if you could manually link it to another device

    PG3 on Polisy

I'm sure there will be. Pg3 is still in testing which is why sudo is required.
  23. Factory reset plug in module. Bring it closer to PLM, choose start linking, press and hold set button until it pops up on console
  24. Colors depends on the theme you choose. Shows the difference between responders and controllers
  25. Besides being terrible for lighting control for various reasons, zwave isn't a bad protocol overall. The problem with it stems from most users trying to use the bare minimum to build out their network only to run into issues. Those who build a strong network are generally pleased with the results it provides. Zigbee is much better than zwave and insteon but it has its own share of problems. You still have to build out the network as well otherwise you'll run into issues with it as well.
