  1. I have a chamberlain whisper garage door with the remote display/motion sensor. You can wire up a relay in parallel with the power wires to the display and it will function the same way as a momentary door bell push button to open/close the garage door. I have a relay output from my Elk doing precisely that, but you can certainly wire up the relay output of an IOLinc to do the same. The down side is that it resets the clock on the display which I care less about.
  2. It's more likely a self proclaimed Wallstreet industry analyst who is manipulating the stock price ahead of WWDC. I would not be surprised if all the reports are linked to the same source. Apple does not have the resources to enter the highly disparate and competitive HA hardware industry. At most Apple will roll out a public API for third parties to more tightly integrate their devices into iOS services ( iBeacons, Siri, GeoFence, etc. ).
  3. It might be cost prohibitive, but I wonder if a pair of Insteon RF APs, a pair of 900 MHz cell phone signal boosters with outdoor antennas would do the trick. I installed a cell phone signal booster at my brother in laws house which is surrounded by taller buildings, the house is wrapped in chicken wire under the stucco, and has wire under the interior plaster. Basically a faraday cage. He couldn't make a phone call sitting in his living room. A $200 cell phone booster kit with omni directional antenna on the roof and presto! If you don't need or want the cell boost, then use a pair of directional antennas. The cell boosters are FCC legal.
  4. You're not the first to want two ISYs linked together. Search this forum for how others may have been successful doing that. Worst case scenario you would have to have a MITM computer to shuffle status/commands between the two using the REST API, i.e. a Raspberry Pi or another 24/7 machine. Or you could program one ISY to remote execute a script that affects the other ISY. viewtopic.php?t=14713 I know there has been interest in a non authenticated REST API, which might allow one to use the network interfaces add on to affect a second ISY. Although I haven't tried, I would be curious if one could include the plain text credentials in a properly formatted REST API HTTP GET command. If it works in a browser, it should work for the network add on.
  5. Response and reliability are great, but I tend to not use them where personal safety is concerned, i.e. to control ones garage door. I use my trusted Elk for that. It has nothing to do with the IOLinc itself, but Insteon can have erratic behavior if you have noise on your power. Just search this forum for examples if you don't believe me.
  6. Well then If it were me, I would pick up a second ISY. Maybe you can find someone selling an old one.
  7. Or buy IP cameras with motion built in.
  8. That is what these are for. http://www.smarthome.com/2443/Access-Po ... and/p.aspx
  9. I have three IOLincs for 1. IP camera with GPIO 2. Leak and high humidity detectors in my attic. 3. Doorbell detector.
  10. There are methods to remotely launch applications and applescripts from another Mac using Remote Apple Events protocol, but not using simple HTTP commands which the ISY network interfaces module would support. Although I have not used it personally yet, I did find this application which would allow remote control using standard HTTP commands for both Mac OS X and Windows. http://www.maccentric.com/dl_saywhat.php Let me know if this is what you are looking for and have any luck with it.
  11. Ultimately it will depend on what application or language you will program in. Here is a example Linux bash script which uses WGET to interface with the REST API. You should be able to modify for variables. https://gist.github.com/4052516 Also if you have the network ISY add on module, technically you should be able to program the ISY to execute or launch a remote program on your Mac from the ISY which would eliminate the necessity of polling the ISY
  12. Use the REST API to poll the variable. http://wiki.universal-devices.com/index ... _Interface
  13. Any number of options. http://www.insteon.com/low-voltage-io.html
  14. I mean no disrespect to UDI, but the ISY does not have a watch dog timer, real time clock, built in battery backup, is not UL rated for fire protection or public safety applications.
  15. Mobilinc has a number of in app purchases. These in app purchases are buy it once, you get the same in app purchase for all devices with the same Apple ID, up to the Apple device limitations limit of 5. The Mobilinc Connect service is a perpetual fee if you want easy 1-2-3 setup of remote access using their cloud service, but if you know a bit about routers and port forwarding you can accomplish the same without the perpetual fee.
  16. Yes. You can add zwave/zigbee to expand your system.
  17. I use MLHD push notifications and geofencing. It's pretty awesome.
  18. If you want to use the mobilinc connect service you have to buy / install the mobilinc module which I think is $1.00. You can open up the ISY admin console and help -> about to see the list of modules. If you installed it will be listed.
  19. My router has a DYDNS client built in. Most routers do.
  20. I use no-IP.com for DYDNS and DNS service. Can't complain. It's free unless you want to register your own domain name. Currently my domain is registered with register.com which I will convert to no-IP during my next renewal. I would have used register.com except they don't offer DYDNS service.
  21. You do have to concede that cloud based thermostats do have the potential for greater good of humankind, since they can combine weather, occupancy, and preference information together to refine adaptive heating and cooling profiles to minimize energy usage. The nest is already tied into 1. Local weather thru you zip code and IP address. 2. Know about the type system installed in your home 3. Although they do not have information regarding the efficiency rating of your system, they can probably develop an index based on heat and cool times. I receive those nest reports every month claiming how much energy they have save customers, but in order to make those claims they must have made some rather crude assumptions regarding the type of TStat the nest was replacing. Personally I do not know anyone who doesn't have at least a one day programmable TStat installed in their home. What nest does not have is information regarding the construction of the home, but they might be able to make an educated guess based on geolocation when you connect to the nest when on the same wifi network, ie you are at home, coupled with public records on when your home was built. Regardless they can use the information to perhaps detect a change in the efficiency ( leak, clog ) of your system and recommend a few service companies to come take a look. Obviously it would not take into consideration if you have a manually controlled attic fan or someone left a window open, but it could simply provide an alert and let you make the decision. Or based on other homes in the same area, might recommend you have an energy audit done, typically done by your local utility for free. As much as despise the google acquisition of nest, there actually could be some benefits. That assumes this is what they have I mind.
  22. Thought I would repeat this one here... Ok here's a far fetched conspiracy for you. The Protect smoke detector has a speaker and wifi. Any speaker can be turned into a microphone. Just ask Edison or Bell. So basically by installing Protect smoke detector(s) you are saving the NSA from having to perform a black bag job on your home, and Google supplies all the data. Nice!
  23. The new google nest.
  24. Both use listview on iPhone. HD gives you the more graphical look on iPad, but no listview on iPad

It's still a beta product. Myself I'm still struggling with what function it servers or does better than an open platform which is not limited or restricted. IE a raspberry PI and Linux.
