"Phantom' Error Messages

Recommended Posts

My ISY-26 is working well and I have virtually perfect signal integrity throughout my home. However, the ISY oftentimes gives me an erroneous error message that says it cannot communicate with a device and to please check my connections. The odd part is that this message will pop up just after a successful operation.

For example, a program instructs to turn off the Foyer Light at 10pm. The light indeed turns off at 10pm and then the error message pops up saying there is a communication failure. If I run a Query on the device it finds it and I can remove the red explanation mark.

I call it a Phantom Error Message - any ideas on why it happens and/or how to prevent it? Could an automated routine be written to automaticcally do a query if the message pops up to verify it?

Hello brobin,

Thanks so very much for the feedback.

Device comm error happens if and only if the device does NOT ACK within the alloted time to a command. So, your device may actually turn on/off but it does not mean that it actually sent an ACK back to the PLM.

May I ask:

1. What version of PLM do you have?

2. Is this happening on random devices or only a selected few?

With kind regards,

Michel

The PLM says "Version 2.7" and it appears to happen randomly without regard to leg or distance.

I have another PLM coming from SmartHome this week that I bought for the EZIO8SA which I expect will be the newest version so I can swap it if you think it will help.

Hello brobin,

Yes, please do be kind enough to replace your PLM. Please do be kind enough to follow the following instructions:

1. Reboot your ISY with the new PLM ... wait for the query to be completed

2. Use File->Restore Modem (PLM)

Please make sure you do NOT use File->Remove Modem (PLM) as it will wipe out all the links from PLM to your devices

With kind regards,

Michel

It's Friday so here's my report as promised. I installed a new v2.8 PLM that arrived yesterday but I still had a bunch of the same error messages. It seems that it's more likely to happen when executing a scene with mutiple devices rather than a single device. Maybe there are too mahny devices ACKing at the same time?

Hi brobin,

Did you do File->Restore Modem (PLM)?

It is very possible that there's network congestion especially if you have a large scene. But, still there's something here that does not make sense and that we have to figure out!

So, you usually get these errors when some of your programs run, right? If we find the offending program(s) then it would be much easier to figure out where the problem is. Do you have a LOT of programs?

With kind regards,

Michel

Hello brobin,

Yes, with pleasure. Also, it would be great if you have a possible list of devices that have the most number of comm errors.

With kind regards,

Michel

Yes, first thing i did was a Restore PLM. I don't have a lot of programs running but you're welcome to log into my ISY and poke around. Can I PM you the URL and login info?
