bernieb Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Hi Wes, Not sure if you had a chance to take a look at the Apple announcement to day for the Apple Watch, if you haven't take a look it's pretty cool. I was just wondering how difficult it would be and if you had any intentions to make and Apple Watch version to control the ISY? Just a thought and would be cool. I would be willing to purchase an additional app that would reside on my watch. Bernie
InsteonNut Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Hi Bernie, Yes, we saw the keynote today and we are REALLY excited for the new NFC and AppleWatch possibilities with MobiLinc. We (developers) are eagerly waiting to see what we can do with the new WatchKit dev APIs. Not sure when Apple will release these to developers, but when they do, we'll be investigating our options. Wes
MWareman Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Anything for Google Wear yet? Been out a while now, getting my Moto 360 soon and currently planning on integrating via Google Now => Tasker => ISY REST. Certainly would be easier with MobiLinc! Oh, what possibilities do you see with NFC, and why are they not realized already on Android that's had NFC for what feels like years now?
oberkc Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Oh, what possibilities do you see with NFC, and why are they not realized already on Android that's had NFC for what feels like years now? Is the answer to this not clear by now?
ravedog Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Because really NFC mostly has been touted as mobile payment. Yes it can do other things. However, aside from the geek factor (hey look, I can buy coffee by just getting my phone out, unlocking it, getting the app open, tapping the terminal (maybe a few times) then done!) really pulling your wallet out swiiping a card is still faster and more universal. Wes Wes, Why are you SO excited about more apple products and the possibilities involved with mobilinc and apple? Are they paying you? You have been asked multiple times WHEN you will be implementing complete support of ANDROID. How about before you do anything else with apple you work on giving us smarter android users the needed features that we are requesting. Like ELK support. How about IP camera support? There are A LOT of android users out here that you are forgetting about
ravedog Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Beacons offers better proximity detection than NFC can u can have better range whereas NFC has to be right in top of it. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
paulbates Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Have to agree with NFC historically being a solution in search of a problem. I tried it on my android phone and tablet 2 years ago and came away with "meh". It worked, but no jaw dropping functionality improvement. I spent 8 months in Manhattan recently, and I spent more time then necessary waiting for people to mess with their phone for a transaction or TSA or Airline check, NFC or otherwise. The credit card world is also a mess in the NFC department, no clear major, trustable partner. My corporate card is amex, and they weren't providing a corp card NFC solution. Apple just announced NFC payment with the IP 6. They will probably bring some standardization and focus to the technology to let credit card cos feel better about it
oberkc Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 I have also found the current options for payment using android phone to be less than stellar. I don't find it to be a problem, however, with the NFC technology. Instead, I suspect it is more a lacking with the various apps, google wallet, or the credit card reader system. It always seemed that the NFC portion worked always. But I am no expert on the technology. This is only a minimally-educated perception.
MWareman Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 I use NFC with a tag in my car dock to tell Tasker that I'm in my car. I also have a tag on my night stand charger. It sets night time volumes and the like. NFC is not just for payments.
Teken Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 With the announcement of Apple Pay the market should see more adoption and faster processing of purchases. The Android camp has been first with many features but sadly poorly executed on all fronts. It doesn't matter what people feel about Apple and their products as a whole. What matters is that they have single handedly moved the market for e-payment.
oberkc Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 What matters is that they have single handedly moved the market for e-payment. I am not sure about the single handed part, but I hope you are correct about bringing change to the epayment market. I would like not carry a pack of charge cards around with me.

Tap to send was the concept that never resonated with me Paul

The Android camp has equipped lots of smart phones with NFC. As far as I am aware not one Android vendor has gotten Amex, Visa, Mastercard, McDonalds, Air carrier, Hotel, etc to use or accept NFC payment(s) in a real world use case.

I was merely addressing the public perception of what NFC was used for (and it's primary widespread usage.). The geeks will always find cool ways of utilizing a technology for its full potential (like your nightstand and car) Still want to see how ibeacons shakes out. Like the idea of being able to walk into a space and have a beacon recognize my presence and trigger an event (presence vs action (NFC tapping). Of course all of this requires your having your phone with you at all times. C'mon! who here doesn't!!!! LOL It's an exciting time.... Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

I could say the same about apple vendors. But I share hope that this capability moves forward with apple on board. Besides, you are reading a post from one who HAS successfully used google wallet at a couple of places, via NFC, including mcdonalds. Unfortunately, I have not found consistent success. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. If the presentation given today is any indicator Apple has indeed moved NFC payment ahead ten fold single handily. MWareman Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 I pay with NFC on my Nexus 5 at McDonalds, CVS, Walgreens and Home Depot regularly. It always just works for me (with Google Wallet). I wonder if my NFC addiction helps mitigate the Home Depot breech? Yes, I'm a geek and an edge case on this stuff. Just annoys me that the tech industry only takes notice when Apple does something, dispute Apple only being 28% or so of US smartphone sales now.
oberkc Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 The nexus 5 is my personal device as well. My best guess as to the source of my inconsistent experience is network issues. While I don't suspect that they are caused by google wallet, NFC, or the card reader, but neither do I completely dismiss the possibility.
bleepblorp Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 I pay with NFC on my Nexus 5 at McDonalds, CVS, Walgreens and Home Depot regularly. I agree MWareman. I use my Nexus 4 for this without issue as well. I hope I do notice an improvement to NFC payment availability now that Apple is involved. Not holding my breath though.
Teken Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 There are lots of opportunities for the masses. The more competitors that enter the market the better. Having choices is always good and normally drives down the price of said tech. My only beef with some of this tech / options is many are crafted so poorly that the customer experience is below sub par. This for Apple IS key, the customer experience. I only caught a few moments about the new phone but it took apple to come up with a feature that allowed the user to still have one hand control on a phat phone by double tapping! User experience? You bet your skinny aszz! LOL Encrypted By: Phoenix Security Solutions
Xathros Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 Phat phone... ...aka a Phablet. Wes- Please don't move to the iPad layout for Mobilinc on the iPhone6/6+. I much prefer the current iPhone interface for Mobilinc. I very much look forward to what you can do with the Apple Watch. -Xathros

InsteonNut Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 Hi Michael, Oh, what possibilities do you see with NFC, and why are they not realized already on Android that's had NFC for what feels like years now? MobiLinc for Android has had support for NFC on Android for almost 2 years through our free MobiLinc Tasker integration built into MobiLinc. With Tasker, MobiLinc/Android can tap into a number of Android phone features that iOS users will likely never see due to the open Android platform. I'm hoping that Apple will open the NFC API up to devs, but I'm not holding my breath. This first go round seems to be focused on payments. We have an iBeacon implementation working with MobiLinc/iOS in our lab, but having a near field indicator would be great to have on iOS in addition to the 50'-75' iBeacon region for finer grain automation control. This is an area where iOS/MobiLinc has opportunity to catch up to Android/MobiLinc/Tasker.

Just annoys me that the tech industry only takes notice when Apple does something, dispute Apple only being 28% or so of US smartphone sales now. Its the opportunity cost and what Android vs Apple brings to the table. Android is the incubator where things are experimented with and tried. Android allows multiple hardware vendors to experiment with different technologies and types of devices. My devices for the past few years have been android and that's why I like it. Apple greatly simplified their platform use cases for the masses, both HW and SW; "this is how you do it". As a result they got the masses. Nicely done. They can leverage this power to drive large infrastructure and finance plays like payment systems because the devices and OS are less of a moving target. While IOS is not for me, I can't deny what their approach has done in this department. This difference is why its harder for android; there are several to many possibilities competing for standards; instead of "this is how you do it". Part of my "mess" comment in my earlier post that I could not use Google wallet 6 months back. AT&T somehow blocked it prior to Kitkat. My original HTC One was further down the path for Kitkat upgrades. Until I could install KitKat, I required ATT ISIS payment system,, and a special SIM card. ISIS is un-appealing at the concept level. I don't want my finances tied up with a mobile phone provider that I may dump. The same reason why I don't use their email addresses, storage, etc. I agree that others have had better experiences with Android payment, and that's great. My experience 6 months ago was an unclear and incomplete path to get it working. Maybe things have improved since then with kitkat. But I don't believe Amex corp cards work yet which would be my primary need. I won't be alone on wanting this one... my guess/hope is that mighty Apple will knock Amex off of their chair on this one... and the benefits will flow out from there.
Teken Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 I believe in the next year or two. You will see google move to standardize the whole Andriod platform due to the lack of consistency in the market place. I wasn't too shocked to see and learn how many virus where targeted to Andriod.
