paulbates Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 Amazon announced last week that they are getting in to smart home tech. As their primary business focus is e-commerce, it should be interesting to see what they have in mind. Kindle & Fire are really the only piece of technology that they create and sell, and those are certainly geared towards having you be on buy on prime and Kindle store. The applications they discuss, sensing a wet floor, or furnace filter reminders won't inspire here. I'm wondering what commerce related home tech they will bring to the table? Maybe they should pair up with the people making the "button" Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
MWareman Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 That's taking 'one-click' a little too far I think.
larryllix Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 That's taking 'one-click' a little too far I think. Ravedog just didn't identify his sarcasm. Text only mediums don't identify it well. Perhaps Morse Code will make a comeback.

Maybe they should pair up with the people making the "button" It does make me wonder. It sounds like "the internet of things" approach, where you don't use a mobile device or web browser, somehow everything is sensed. Even sensors in clothes: "There is no right arm on your shirt. Did you get in a bar fight, again? This is happening more than usual, I will order 2 new shirts for you this time" (?) I'm sure it will get figured out, however I wonder if traditional HA enthusiasts will find themselves, or how it will look.
Teken Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 I thinks its great another big heavy weight has entered the arena. But, hope very much it allows third party devices and supports multi protocol devices. Right now the whole Apple Home Kit is just a complete fail.

It's part of Yosemite and not in iOS yet (update coming). Let's see what fleshes out.
Teken Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 How is it a fail. It's part of Yosemite and not in iOS yet (update coming). Let's see what fleshes out. OK, my fail comment may be stated too early since the entire Home Kit was just released. But, since I see no mention of any existing protocol being championed or mentioned. That really has me taking pause and sitting on the side lines. I get they are trying to unify the whole HA which in the big picture is a complete mess. But, right now we need one single box (Low Power) that can support all of the major HA standards: X10, Insteon, Zigbee, Z-Wave, UPB. The current Revolv Controller which I had a little bit of time to play with is simply junk, vaporware, and waste of time and effort. The Vera has lots of potential but their focus is on Z-Wave, and Insteon is not being developed at any normal pace. There are a few PC Software suites which look to support all of the above but their customer support and development seems to me to be pretty slow and unsupported by the masses.
