Deaf ISY99i or just not listening?

I have been replacing some 2476D and having some problems with communications as noted in the other posts. Now I seem to be having issues with programs not triggering that are based on events like a fast on command. Timers in programs work fine but I have a couple of SLD's that when are triggered via a fast on a program is to trigger other lights on and or off. These now do not work for some reason. These switches were not replaced and have been working for quite a while. If I go into programs and run them everything works fine.

It seem after replacing 2476D's with new ones (using the replace command) I have developed all sorts of problems. I am going to air gap the new switches and try and see if maybe one of the new switches is causing communication problems.

Hello raypanic,

Unfortunately, when you replace a device, you will have to manually replace all references to it in the programs. Please do use the Find/Replace feature and let ISY replace all occurrences of the previous device to the new device.

With kind regards,

Michel

The switch with the "fast on" program was not replaced??? Not sure if you are following me. The switch triggering the program was never replaced.

Hi Ray,

I am so very sorry!

Ok, in this case, does ISY show status changes when you control the switch physically?

Michel

No the ISY will not update unless the "Query" button is clicked. And it seems the ISY is not updated with any switch activation. I tested this with the new switches V4.0 working and without them on (air gapped).

It really seem the ISY is not hearing anything??? It will send commands out but doesnot see anything comming in....????

I also noticed another problem. When logging into the ISY the first webpage that shows devices, sceens and admin links, If you click on devices or sceenes it asks fo login but after entering the information the HTML Page displays nothing Blank a window. Not sure if this is linked to the other problems or not.

Also in talking to my wife she said the fast on programs were not working even before I replaced the bad SLD switches. Possibly there was a problem with the ISY before the 4.0 SLD replacements.

Hello Ray,

The main problem is that ISY is not receiving status feedback from your switches the causes of which could be one (or more) of the three below (in the order of likelihood):

1. The PLM does not have responder links for your switch (factory reset your switch followed up by Restore Device)

2. There's noise and thus ISY does not receive status updates

3. A defective PLM

For those devices that exhibit this problem, please do be kind enough to do the following:

1. Factory reset followed by Restore Device ... if this does not work, then

2. Choose one with the least amount of links, remove it from ISY, and then add it back. If this does not work, I suspect a defective switch

If the problem is intermittent, then I suspect noise.

With kind regards,

Michel

Not intermittent problem - never works

Restored SLD - no fix

Removed and re-linked SLD - no fix

Bad PLU ??? dont have another one, Can I reset it and re program it?

Some of the devices have wrong description and version numbers. A switch link dimmer shows as a keypad dimmer ect.. ( I am deleting them from system and re adding them. This clears up the description and the version issues.

To me either a PLU problem or ISY problem. No updated on ISY for any devices if state changes. A query must be run.

Hi Ray,

Initially, did you do a network crawl/spider to discover all your devices?

Michel

Yes I did do a crawl, I am thinking of doing another one. Everything is just too Random. Now I see the v.35 SLD will show in ISY but eariler versions will not, One minute I get a failure of cumminications one minute it works fine. I have rebooted the ISY the PLM Its starting to get crazy. All the insteon devices work fine between each other all links established with the ISY as far as sceens and such work fine. It's just when using the ISY things are completely ramdom sometimes it works sometimes it does not. "failure" and loss of com messages come up oftem while programming.

Also another wierd thing when a particular sceen is triggered by the ISY. Devices not even in the sceen turn on and off?? Seems something is corrupted??

Only other thing I can think of is we replaced two ceiling lights with Quartz halogen fixtures that use new bulbs. These lighs have been off while I have been trying to figure out the problems. They are on a 2476D with a slave.

I am still on ver 2.6.3 should I update the firmware?

Hi Ray,

I do apologize for the inconvenience.

I think the main problem is the crawl: you have orphaned/missing links which are causing all the havoc (including random behavior). This usually happens if previous linking was done with HouseLinc.

I also think you have noise and thus the intermittent communications issues:

1. Is your PLM next to a UPS, telephone charger, computer/monitor, florescent light?

2. Do you have any X10 boosters?

3. Do you have access points bridging your phases?

As far as the linking problem, here is what I suggest:

1. Please choose an isolated room where none of the switches are linked to anything outside that room

2. Remove all of them from ISY

3. Factory reset them

4. Add them back in to ISY

Let me know if you get any status updates please.

With kind regards,

Michel

I did a crawl months ago when the ISY was new but not since, Do you want me to do a crawl agian?

I also think you have noise and thus the intermittent communications issues:

1. Is your PLM next to a UPS, telephone charger, computer/monitor, florescent light? No its in the basement plugged in right by the electrical panel.2. Do you have any X10 boosters? No no 10X at all

3. Do you have access points bridging your phases? Yes I got them when the remote links came out they were required at the time.

OK It must be a noise problem, I moved the PLM to the same circuit and now the SLD's that had communication problems now work. Now other devices further away do not communicate.

I have the "2443PR" Phase couplers. If I wanted to put more of these in the home will it be effective? I am going to buy a few more noise blockers and try these as well.

Strange thing is all my Insteon devices work flawlessly, sceens, 3way's, and links to KPL's. The only thing that has issues with communications is the ISY???

Thanks for your help.

Hi Ray,

Thanks so very much for the update.

Would you be kind enough to plug one of the AccessPoints right on top of the PLM and retry?

I am not sure if AccessPoints alone will be the answer as I suspect some type of noise. The main issue is that either the signal does not get to the PLM or something is attenuating the signal.

With kind regards,

Michel

I ordered filter links and a wired in phase coupler and a pair of access points. I am waiting for them to come in.

One interesting test I did was to fire up my old Houselink desktop with its PLM Then I pluged in the PLM (V2.75) That i got with the ISY in the same outlet. Having both systems running. Every press of a device shows up in the Houselink log. I programmed the double tap into the Houselink and it works flawlessly.

On the other hand the ISY does not hear anything. I used the log feature in the ISY but nothing comes up except commands issued from the ISY Itself. It seems to be able to query devices and get a respose but just sitting there and waiting for a devie generated signal nothing seems to ring in.

Both PLM's are pluged into the same outlet. Could the PLM for the ISY be bad or need restoring? That is the only thing I have not messed with.

Also is there some documentation on the diagnostics section of firmware 2.6.7? I did upgrade to this version.

By the way I have filter links on my two TV's and on on my desktop computer. I ordered more to use wherever. I have a 3rd TV without one but in testing I unplugged it with no difference. I have my laptop that does not have a filter on it but I figured as it has a transformer so its OK.

From All this it seems there is something not right in the ISY or its PLM But I will press on.

Hello Ray,

This is indeed great information. If ISY is NOT hearing anything then it must be the PLM (especially since it works when you plug it in to some other outlet). Please do go ahead and get a new PLM as well.

To replace a PLM, please make sure you do the following:

1. boot up your ISY with the new PLM

2. do File->Restore Modem (PLM)

Make sure you do NOT issue File->Remove Modem.

With kind regards,

Michel

I did a restore modem command and now is all OK again. Everything works as it did before. It must of been a problem when replacing the SLD's that it got the PLM scrambled up. How I noticed it was in the diagnostics I ran a "show PLM Links table" and a "show ISY links table" The PLM count was 20 links and the ISY was 256. I figured something was way off so I did the restore and now all is fine. No com errors while querying, status of devices is correct ect....

Thanks for your help.

Ray,

I am so very glad we got this taken care of. But, may I humbly request that you get a replacement PLM? What you're experiencing is not normal and I suspect a defect in your PLM's hardware.

With kind regards,

Michel

Ok I can order a PLM. something obviously went wrong with it. Thanks for all your help. I really like the ISY but I was starting to get frustrated with it. It always seems its such a little thing wrong once the problem is found.

I have more switches to change out and a few devices to add I can get back to the funstuff again!!!

Hello again,

Since you did a crawl when you first configured the system, and since the PLM went bad on you, and since you are going to replace a lot more switches, then may I humbly suggest starting with a clean slate? This will guarantee that you are not going to have any phantom links in your devices and ensures less-frustration in the future!

With kind regards,

Michel
