ngeren Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 One word: Amazing! Amazon has flawlessly pulled off a speech recognition driven computing device. I've had my Echo for a few days now, and have been extremely impressed with both the hardware and software of their device. Yes -- I will be developing an ISY integration for it soon as the developer kit is released (already signed up for it).
Xathros Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 Awesome! I am expecting my echo around 6/15. I will be ready for testing once you have something built. -Xathros
Guest Digger Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 I have an echo and it doesn't really seem to do anything but play music. Ask it a question it does not know the answer 80% of the time (unless it's the weather). Ask it to reshuffle music it doesn't understand. Ask it to switch to a different album it gives me two definitions of albums. I know Siri is much more mature but it seems like the Echo is in Alpha Testing at best. Just my opinion and given about 6 months to a year I guess it will improve. Hmmmm I don't know the answer to that or Sorry I can't find an answer to the question I heard for the last 9 questions. On the 10th she said I wasn't able to understand the question I heard. Continuing to ask questions I note variations of the above. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
ngeren Posted June 5, 2015 Author Posted June 5, 2015 I built something really primitive a few years back -- so I know how challenging open-air recognition is; great to see a company taking leaps and bounds in it.
Guest Digger Posted June 7, 2015 Posted June 7, 2015 It has lots of potential. The hardware was very well made and designed. I guess the true functionality will come Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
ngeren Posted June 9, 2015 Author Posted June 9, 2015 Yay! Got approved for the beta developer program. I'll try get something basic going with the ISY real soon.

Unbelievable! -Xathros
chrishick Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 ngeren, I've had my Echo for a few weeks now. Let me know if you need an alpha tester. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
ngeren Posted June 13, 2015 Author Posted June 13, 2015 I got into my developer account and started going through things. Most of the doc links are broken, but from what I can tell Echo apps are deployed in the cloud and need a publicly exposed API to interact with. I have some ideas on how I could get this to work -- more soon.
PurdueGuy Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 I'll throw out an offer to help alpha/beta test too.
mwester Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 Correct me if I'm wrong on this -- but this Echo device sends all your commands (or anything it decides MIGHT BE a command) up to Amazon's file servers for processing, and they keep a copy of that sentence/sequence of audio on their systems as well, right?
ravedog Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 Yes. Everything is done in the cloud. Siri, Google Now, Echo, Cortana. Server side processing is much more powerful in speech recognition and context than any home computer or portable device can ever be. That's why it appears amazing out of the biz that it recognizes your speech without any training.
ngeren Posted June 14, 2015 Author Posted June 14, 2015 Yup -- all streamed and processed in realtime (that's why it's fast recognizing words too). I got a test app up and running, but I need to figure out how I'm going to duct tape it back to the ISY behind a firewall. My first thought is to use my OS X app "ISY Quick Controls" to work as a proxy with Alexa through an enabled option.
Michel Kohanim Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Hello everyone, Since Amazon is pretty much ignoring us, if you already have an Amazon developer account, perhaps we can use our new ISY portal (in the cloud). If you are interested and you think it may help, please do let me know (support@universal-devices.com) so that I can set you up with an account on our portal. My only concern is that now everything will depend on an internet connection which is pretty much against our philosophy. This said, just getting it going might be worth a try. Thanks so very much and with kind regards, Michel
epotex Posted June 22, 2015 Posted June 22, 2015 Can't wait to integrate ISY with Alexa - If you need more testers, please let me know.
Michel Kohanim Posted June 22, 2015 Posted June 22, 2015 Hi epotex, Welcome to our forum! Please checkout: http://forum.universal-devices.com/topic/14525-amazon-echo-and-isy With kind regards, Michel
Kevin Connolly Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 The issue I have with all these IoT devices is the internet. It'd be nice if it could be kept local.
Michel Kohanim Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Hi Kevin, I totally agree with you alas we are forced to use a portal. With kind regards, Michel
danbutter Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Agreed. I would love to have voice control, but only if it is all local.
