Cannot Link 2474 DWH

I installed a 2474 DWH 2 wire Switchlink.  It works fine manually.  I was unable to link it to my ISY 994i/iR Pro – running v4.3.26.  It is switching a hot wire to a light – no neutral in the box.

 

I tried using Link Management/Start Linking and pressing the set button.  I also tried manually by using Link Management/New Insteon Device.  I added the address and a description.  I tried first using Auto Discover and then also tried by selecting the 2474 DWH.  Either way I get:

“New Device Errors  The following device could not be added: 1F.C8.33  Cannot determine Insteon Engine.”

 

Anyone have any ideas?

That is the first command issued by New INSTEON Device.  It means the PLM cannot reach the 2474.  Is this a full Insteon installation with coupling?

Bob, what type of light is the switch wired to?  It must be an incandescent bulb, however some have reported that some leds will work with the switch.

I've used eco bright 60 watt equivalent LEDs from home depot for a few years, but its worth trying it with no load attached.

 

I connect new devices to a plug and outlet near the PLM and configure before installing, that way I know if the device is bad, or there is noise / signal problems in the install location

Three things to note:

 

A model 2474 will not work with no load attached, since it itself is powered by splitting power with the load and running a small current through it even when off. If you disconnect or unscrew the bulb, you create an open circuit where the switch receives no power;

 

CFLs and LEDs may not pass enough electricity through for the switch to work, or in doing so that may cause the bulb to flicker when 'off'. They recommend an incandescent bulb of over 25 watts, IIRC; and

 

The 2474 is a single-band device that transmits over the RF band, since it doesn't have the necessary 120 volt wiring to supply a power line signal. That means it needs to be within RF range of a dual-band device that can get messages to and from the ISY. If you haven't yet installed your dual-band equipment, you may want to plug or wire it in first, before attempting to add any single-band equipment like the 2474.

I have an LED installed.  I will try an incandescence tomorrow.  I have PLM and think that RF is in range; But that is something to check also.

You may get an LED bulb to work, but you really should use an incandescent bulb to add the 2-wire SwitchLinc. BTW, even if you get the LED bulb to work, there's a good chance you are reducing its lifespan.

That was it. Tried changing to incadescent bulb - still did not link.  

The nearest Dual Link switch and the nearest SignalLinc RF were too far away.  The new switch is in the garage and the nearest RF was about 40 ft way (SignaLinc) through 2x6 wall and metal door.  Even with the door open it would not link.  So, been meaning to put the driveway lights on Insteon for quite awhile.  Changed the two switches in the garage to Dual Band Switchlincs (added to Scene for three way operation).  This gave me the RF I needed and the 2-wire switch successfully linked.

Any advice?

If your 2474 is installed in a metal box it may be the issue.. also, they type of RF device nearby could make a difference.  I don't know but believe devices as range extenders, lamplincs, on/off modules have more power in their RF transmission than hardwired devices.

 

Anyway.. you might try first "factory reset" then open Event Viewer to level 3, attempt the link and copy to clipboard the resulting trace (clipboard looking icon located centrally lower tool bar) then paste into post.

 

cannot determine the device link address is often related to comm issues.

Thanks Jon, I had already attempted a factory reset and moved a few extra range extenders to that area with the same result. 

 

I ended up doing a bit of re-wiring so I could get a neutral wire into that switch box.  So I no longer need the 2-wire setup.
