Java 2+ Required - Tried All Suggestions...

Haven't had to touch the programming in my ISY 994i in a while, but now need to.  When I try to launch the Admin Console, in either IE 11 or Firefox 45, running on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, I get the error "Java 2+ Required".

I did some searches on this topic and found a number of items.  I've cleared the cache and even uninstalled Java and did a new install of the latest Version 8 Update 91.  I have the IP of the ISY in the Exception Site List in the Java control panel.

What am I missing here?  Can't think of anything that has changed on this machine since the last time it worked, when I upgraded from my old ISY 99 to this 994i.  Obviously it worked then, since I had to restore all the programs from the backup of the 99.

You might try using java application (admin.jnlp, download from release thread for your firmware version.)  The java applet (launches from browser) uses browser resources so to use it you may have to clear the browser cache to use it.

Hi johnmsch,

As jerland suggested, please try:

1. Please clear your Java cache: https://www.java.com/en/download/help/plugin_cache.xml

2. Go to http://isy.universal-devices.com/994i/admin.jnlp .. Use the generated ICON on your desktop (instead of browser)

With kind regards,

Michel

Hey Michael (or anyone else who knows :), what is the complete Exception Site List we need to enter in the Java Admin Panel? My console still works fine on my workstation but on my notebook I can not get it to run (unless I do it trough the browser). I cleared cache-nothing, I reinstalled the JAVA completely - nothing.. When I try to start the downloaded admin.jnlp - don't get the startup logo, nothing happens and the shortcut doesn't get put on my desktop.. I am certain it's  a java problem but can't figure out what anymore :(

Hi TheFallenAngel,

You do NOT need anything in the exception list.

On your notebook, admin.jnlp goes into the download folder. You will have to go there and click it before anything happens.

With kind regards,

Michel

No Michael, I do that already :) I am using this all good on My Workstation. Something happened on my Notebook that prevents the admin.jnlp from running.

Thanks for the replies.

Tried looking at this again first thing this morning, even before checking email or this forum.  On the My Lighting page, under Settings, there is a button for Install Admin Console (Internet).  Clicked on that and it installed the shortcut to the Admin Console on my desktop.  Can't believe I didn't notice that before.

Out of curiosity, how long has that option been on the Settings page?

Just noticed something I haven't seen before.  When I start the Admin console from that new desktop shortcut, this "ISY Finder" window pops up before the console, then stays in the background.  What should I do with this?  Click Save?

TheFallenAngel,

Are you certain that you have the latest? The old UI's certificate expired so you can no longer run it. What I would do is:

1. Clear Java cache AND delete all the certificates in Java Console (under Security tab) AND remove all the sites on the Exception list

2. Go to http://isy.universal-devices.com/994i/admin.jnlp

3. Make sure you are asked whether or not you trust "Universal Devices, Inc." ... you might want to check the option that makes your decision permanent

Michel

Yes I always pull the latest;

1, 2 - did many times; also I said fully reinstalled Java;

3 - doesn't do that..

It is something that prevents the console.jlnp from running but can't figure out what. Again I CAN run it from IE, just not standalone.. Weird.

Cheers,

Alex

I am having the same issue, I just plugged mine in out of the box.  I am running windows 10 with Edge, Explorer and Chrome - I cleared the cache, I am able to connect to the ISY 994i ZW but nothing works with the admin concole, after I login the window dissapears and closes- even the desktop icon does this.  I do have the latest & greatest Java....Edge & Chrome do not support Java Plug Ins.

Thanks,

Brian

I resolved my issue - it was my firewall/anti-virus.  I use Zonealarm and after turning that off completely it works - now to t/s the config issue so that it works in conjunction with it.

** Update - no longer works, windows just disappears.  I played around with disabling parts of zone Alarm and also turning it off completely, no luck.  It is in a trusted network (I added the IP as a trusted IP as shown in the wiki) - I worked on another PC with same version of Java and it fails as well (also has ZA).

I am able to use a laptop (win 7) with Java 6 Build 81 and it allows me to login and use the console.- the problem version is Java version 8 Build 91 -I have both 32 and 64 bit versions installed on windows 10 machine - both PCs failed both have zonealarm.

Now interestingly enough I was able to run it on a Windows XP machine (also running zonealarm) with Java ver 8 Build 91 no issues and also running Zone Alarm.

not sure what I've been able to deduce from this, but it is what it is....Windows 10 seems to be the common factor, Zone Alarm is no problem.

After a couple of months of being unable to access the admin console due to the above issues (failed on three Win10 systems and Server 2012, multiple browsers and multiple Java downloads etc.), the advice here got me running.

Then I tried it on a Surface Pro 4. What a disaster! The combination of modest screen size and high resolution give me mostly empty screen with what looks to be about 4-point type. I can't read it with a magnifying glass! In case you think I am exaggerating, I'll attach a screen shot (if this blog supports that--apparently not)You guys need to find a way to scale the display.

After the experience of the last few months, and now this, I am not at all convinced that a Java based IDE is the way to go. And, partially as a result, I'm not at all sure ISY is the way to go.

Upgrade to the latest 4.x version (make sure firmware and console version match) - you'll find that you'll be able to change the font size so you can read it on those ultra-high-res displays.

And if you search other threads here, you'll note that UDI have stated that they're doing no further development on the Java IDE -- they too know that a Java-based IDE is not the way to go!
