Weatherproof Open/Close sensor

Has anybody had any luck weatherproofing the Insteon open/close sensor? I have one outdoors and it has been going for a year but now died. I'm going to buy a new one but wanted ideas on making it weatherproof. I took an HDTV for my patio and covered the motherboard and powerboard with several coats of CRC Urethane Seal Coat and it has been going strong for 4 years now.  I was thinking of doing the same or using some dielectric grease.

You should do an autopsy on the failed sensor, determine the root cause.

 

 

What are you trying to monitor?  It would be a lot easier to seal the unit if you are using the built-in reed switch.    Several companies make IP67 rated project boxes, but ones with a waterproof cable gland are much more expensive than plastic boxes without a cable entry.

You can always use Novec electronic water proofing spray from 3M. Used it for years in the field and has never let me down besides the initial sticker shock . . .

 

But, then again I received it free from work back in the day . . .

 

You really don't want to apply and use dielectric compound to the PCB only to contacts like the I/O ports and battery terminals.
