While I'm sure most of us use the Insteon I/O for garage status and control, has anyone used the Elk M1 as one for an interface. On an M1 board, output 3 is an available dry contact that could be used and I like the idea of eliminating an I/O linc for more reliability. Thanks.

I have my garage doors wired to the Elk.  It is of course a never-failed comm.  If you have the ability to hard wire back to the Elk panel, then I would definitely do it.  Myself, I didn't think to hard wire for control of the door (only status of the door), so I hacked an RF garage door opener and wired it directly to an Elk relay.  This works great for me since my Elk panel is easily within radio range.  I have never had a missed command in 8 years.  Much better than using Insteon comm.

The IOLinc has a high failure rate and exhibits unexpected behavior which can cause your garage door to randomly open or close. I use the Elk output 3 and a zone input for status.

Those were my thoughts as well. I've experienced similar issues with the I/O linc as far as unexpected behavior. With the reliability of the M1, I'm looking forward to making the switch.

I have had two I/O lincs (V2.3) on my garage doors for three years, and I have never experienced hardware failures or random door opening issues. Maybe they had problems with older hardware revisions?

I also have my garage door wired to my Elk. I use a wide gap contact for BA alarming and status to ISY. I then wired my garage door opener to a spare Elk rely for open/close control.

I hardwired my door back to my Elk. Output three can open/close the door, and a mag switch drives the entry-2 zone (with a much longer entry timer).

The inner door to the house is entry-1 (along with the front door) with a short timer.

 

Insteon is an insecure protocol. That was my main driver to not depend on it for garage door operations. Plus, all-ons have been know to operate the iolinc, and cause the door to open...

 

Just too much risk..

I use the ELK m1 for similar reasons as stated above. I also like that it has battery backup and could operate my GDO that also has battery backup.
