Teken Posted February 14, 2018 Posted February 14, 2018 I'm not sure if there is a setting that can be locked so replies from me are properly spaced. After reviewing a few replies from myself via TapaTalk, PC, Other many of the replies have massive spaces between each paragraph?!?! One reply looked like this for example -> Hello Yes What? Why is the spacing so wide???
stusviews Posted February 14, 2018 Posted February 14, 2018 A feature for some is a bug for others. The new format assumes that each time you press Enter, that you're starting a new paragraph, thus inserting an extra blank line. Paragraphs consist of a run of sentences without pressing Enter at all, like the old manual typewriters. The result is that you can't single space. IMO, this is a bug. Here's an example of the problem: If ABC happens Then do this Else do that Below is the result of typing the first two lines as one line with lots of spaces. If ABC happens These line show the spaces, actually periods so that the spaces show. Then.........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................do that In this case, the spaces are dashes. Else----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------do that I'd really single line spacing, but don't see that option.
MWareman Posted February 14, 2018 Posted February 14, 2018 Testing <Enter> Testing <Shift><Enter> Seems <Shift><Enter> performs a <CR> - but <Enter> performs new paragraph. The more you know..
Teken Posted February 14, 2018 Author Posted February 14, 2018 This appears to work for the PC but for what ever reason using TapaTalk the massive line spacing is present.
Mark H Posted February 14, 2018 Posted February 14, 2018 Line spacing now follows the publishing standard of "The enter key is a paragraph separator, not a linefeed", however that can be changed in the system settings to mimic the old method. As MWareman noted....... Shift-Enter is a linefeed, Enter starts a new paragraph. It's recommended to simply "keep typing" until you do want a paragraph break, then hit enter. This is partly because whoever is viewing your post may not have the same screen resolution as you do, so if you used to use enter (or, now, Shift-Enter) as linefeed, you may see proper layout, but those with e.g. a tablet or phone would see something like: Quote "This is a short sentence. This is short." Whereas you ,with a higher-resolution screen, would see the entire sentence on one line: Quote "This is a long sentence." "This is short." (I hope that made sense....)
mwester Posted February 14, 2018 Posted February 14, 2018 Yeah, that all makes sense --- IF one is entering a document. As a technical forum, we often enter programs, or blocks of text where precise formatting is important. So using a Microsoft-Word-like mechanism that alters the text as it's entered is, well, it's just sub-optimal. (I really, really, really HATE computers that think they know better than I.)
