Toggle switch gone bad?

Featured Replies

HI,

Just curious if anyone has ideas.  I have two toggle switches in garage that sit side by side.  One of them decided to not be working so well.  It always works locally, but not always in a program or remotely.  I tired to restore it an the isy can never complete the "write".  So I assume it is bad (as several years old), so replaced with another used one I had around and while isy can add it to the program it has the  same problem of isy not being able to update it.  Since these are old non-dual band units I ordered a new dual band paddle switch arriving today.  I will install and see if that fixes the problem, but with this switch working for years and the second one (although also old) not working in the same way, I am thinking it may be another problem.  Any thoughts?

I know with my togglincs, especially one on the outskirts of my insteon network, ... they can  "lose their marbles" and need to be factory reset, and then restored. Like every 3 - 4 years, more often if there is a power outage with brown outs.

What you describe can also sometimes indicative of a noisy load problem. If the problem persists across several devices, it could be that. Is it an LED bulb, etc?

What is it controlling? Sometimes bulbs such as cfl puts out a lot of noise as the age. While the light output is still good, it causes havoc on Powerline communications

It is a nunber of LED lights

Factory reset is pin pulled then held back in for 10sec correct. Did that and tried to restore but write function halted half way through

With the LEDs removed? If the LEDs are creating the noise that could explain it

no, LED lights still in did a factory reset then restore and when writing updates is still only goes halfway then sticks

will the fact that the new switches are dual band help?  the arrival of the new switches is delayed due to the ones I got today are on-off, so returned them, wanted dimmers

It can help. However you could still have issues. You're better off fixing the source of your problems than putting a bandaid on it.

I would unscrew the bulbs and test communication. If it improves, I would go with a different brand of led. I've found Philips warm glow and feit enhance line works well with insteon. Others will have their favorites as well.

all loads (lights) removed still will not update

Try moving to a location without issues and update. If it still doesn't work it's the device and a replacement will work. If it does work then it's something with that location and a new device may not work unless you have other dual band devices within range.

The only caveat is that I've had cases were excessive line noise "confused" even dual band devices. I'm not suggesting a course of action different than lilyoyo,  but currently the evidence does not exclude local line noise as a problem.

seems to be just a bad switch, at least the new dual band one did work right away, so problem solved, will keep a watch is it a "band-aide" withe the dual band or is it solid, but so far OK
