ISY994iZ integration with SmartThings Hub

Hi all,

I had set up a SmartThings Hub and successfully added it to an ISY994iZ installation, but recently one of my  2 Schlage Connect locks started acting strangely: It would lock within seconds of being unlocked. Autolock was off, and the locking was much too fast for the autolock feature anyway. So after some troubleshooting I determined that it only happened when the SmartThings hub and the ISY994iZ were both running, but not when I disconnected the ISY994iZ. Interestingly, I also have a second Schlage lock that always works correctly from both hubs.

What I'd like is for the SmartThings Hub to be the primary and the ISY to be secondary controller. What I did:

1. Added everything directly to ST.

2. Put ISY in Receive (Learn) mode

3. Added ISY to ST and did "Repair Links".

Should this work? I ask because the wonky lock still won't show up on the ISY even though the ST hub knows about and will control it. Maybe I need to exclude the lock from the ISY with the ST hub disconnected? I also tried connecting the lock directly to the ISY, but that doesn't work.

Benefits of ST:

Easy access to info on status of locks and lights from Android and iOS apps.

Simple setup.

Support for Zigbee as well as Zwave. Thus greater selection of devices.

Simpler and slightly more sophisticated programming (nested IFs, for example), although it's all cloud-based.

How do you link the ST Hub to ISY ?

You could try opening the event viewer to level 3 to see if ISY is sending out a LOCK command.  Is it possible that you have an ISY program doing this?

I'm not sure what you mean by "connecting the lock directly to the ISY", but If the ISY cannot see the other lock then you may have to exclude/include it again.

FYI/ Even as a secondary controller, ISY assumes that it is the central controller and writes/rewrites associations to all the devices in the network.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the reply. As I understand how programs work, I think it was a program with some incomplete logic. I had a program set to check the back door lock at 1:00 AM (IF time is 1:00 AM) and THEN lock it if it wasn't already. But the ELSE was to run a second program that said IF the front door is unlocked, lock it. So my thinking is that unlocking the front door caused the ISY to check the back door lock program, find the IF false because it wasn't 1:00 AM, then run the ELSE, which had no condition for locking the front other than that it was unlocked. Is that how it works?

By connecting the lock directly to the ISY, I mean that I put the lock in pairing mode and paired it to ISY directly even though it was already paired to the ST hub. What I did was first disconnect the ST hub, then exclude the lock from ISY, then include it to ISY. Both ISY and ST hub can now control it, so all is well.

I noticed the option to make the ISY a secondary controller, but when I put it in the mode to look for a primary, it doesn't seem to find the ST hub whether I put the ST in add device mode or not. At this point it's mostly a pedantic exercise because everything is working now.

See the first post above.

I read the first post, but I do not understand 2 parts of it.

“I had set up a SmartThings Hub and successfully added it to an ISY994iZ installation“  Are you saying, added SmartTings to the ISY or just the devices?

“3. Added ISY to ST and did "Repair Links". Did you add the ISY as a device in SmartThings?  I am trying to do this to link all my devices and cannot figure out how to do it.  Or did you mean added the ZWave devices? (Or what?.)

I started with adding all Zwave devices to ST. Then I put ISY in receive mode and ST in add device mode, which added ST (called Zwave controller) and most ST devices to ISY, simultaneously adding ISY (called Zwave controller also) to ST. The repair links on ISY added the remaining ST-linked devices to ISY.

The above configuration allows me to control the Zwave devices from both controllers. I haven’t figured out how to use the “make ISY secondary controller” option, partly because it only sometimes appears as a Zwave option on ISY. I’m also not sure what difference it would make if ISY was secondary. For my purposes, ST is primary because I am too cheap to spend $49.95 on MobiLinc.

I am glad to hear I’m not the only one trying to do this. I found very little about it searching both here and on SmartThings.

Remote control of the ISY through a simple Android or iOS user interface. I'm using SmartThings with the hub for that.

Because I really like Insteon Devices for power dimmers/switches.  signals over Power line and RF are obscure and probably a bigger hassle to hack but i have sort of worked my way into a Samsung Universe (Phones, TV's etc) and am already in that cloud.  The Samsung universe is fairly large and hopefully, between the 2, I can have more options for devices i want to deploy.

Hi guys, Im reviving this...
I want to add a ST hub to my ISY for the simple purpose of read their Multi Purpose Sensors (which I need them to read temperature in each room). Do you guys know if me adding the ST hub to ISY, I would be able to run ISY programs based on Sensors readings?

My idea is to read the temperature in each room to make a program to run booster fans inside the air ducts to bring heat/cold air to those rooms in need...

Thanks in advance guys

Can I ask why specifically SmartThings?  If the goal is for temperature readings there are other z-wave sensors that report temperature and other means of getting temperature.  I will agree the Multipurpose sensor from ST is a good sensor but it is Zigbee.

Price-wise and open more options inside the automation... I know its zigbee but now I will be able to use Zigbee devices too.

So it's not specifically about SmartThings?  More about the Zigbee devices?  So.... Zigbee integration is of interest?  If so the up-side is I've been considering developing this for iSY as I'm also working on an integration for HomeSeer as well.  It will not be using SmartThings as that is primary cloud based which I do no like.

In summary... IF the hub/interface etc was in the $100-$150 range total and integrated with ISY that is of interest?

I have a ZigBee NYCE Ceiling motion sensor added and working.  Motion is REAL TIME and the other values update based on standard interval of the sensor.   Also to note Z-Wave devices are also being supported in this integration and I'm going to see if I can include the built-in native apps from Hubitat which will also include full Lutron Caseta Pro / RadioRA integration capability.

The integration is with the Hubitat Elevation hub.  I'll post full details and information once I get this further along. So... probably tomorrow sometime.

Well, Im an integrator. These days people are "educated" in regards of home automation. So me having experience with Smartthings is a plus, always... even though its garbage, it steals all of your information and sell it to 3rd party people you dont know, I want to get familiar and see all the pros and cons. So answering the question about why Smartthings, it is the most one that all customers with low budget question me about. So if I can go and make some dollars helping them, why not... But because I like to go all in, I want to dive into it to see all possibilities.

Hubitat Elevation is a new kid on the block which is built around being a local processing.  We all call it a local SmartThings as it's very much a clone of the ST system.  I'm working on an integration currently.  The initial prototyping has been released and I posted about it here:

As an integrator as well :) but more on the software side of things I try to keep things local if possible and if it makes sense.  Hubitat is a good system with some minor growing pains but it's worth looking at.  Almost all of the current users are former SmartThings users!  I have a first public release version of the hub and it's been improving greatly in the last year.

Awesome! Thanks for the tip! I will get some more info in regards of this system! Thanks a lot!

Welcome.  Like I said it's a good system and the developers put a lot of focus on ST device compatibility.  I think most ST devices work so do most Iris devices (not v1 though).  So it's a good "joining" of systems and after almost of year of me fighting them they gave in with a integration option :)
