Replace OutLetLinc actually removes the device first!

Hello,

 

Trying to replace an OutletLin with an ApplianceLinc and the first thing it does os remove the OutLetLinc, then it continues (which is a waste given that the new device is not there anymore (since it removed it).

 

Tried it twice with 2 OutletLincs and the same results.

 

Manual seems to be the only way, then remove the applinc and remove lincs and then add it back again. .

I am not sure that I follow your question. I understand that, to physically replace a device, one must first remove it from the ISY. Then, go ahead and pull out the outletlink (I assume you are replacing it with a dumb outlet), and plug in the appliancelink. Once plugged in, add it to the ISY, then to any scenes that you wish.

 

Hopefully, that answers the question.

Not the other way around. The database for the old device is scanned, all references to its address swapped with the new device, all references from remote devices updated, and all PLM links swapped. At the end:

#2 will have a new address BUT will have the same name as that of #1 (hence REPLACE).

Right, however it says it is "removing" the device that was just added. Then it disappears. Programmers are programmed to use as little characters as possible which is always obvious as to who is doing what.

 

That works for coding but a programmers thought process is how they are programmed. Programmers should program (code) not describe except for commenting within their own code.

 

Programmers have to code the description to complete their task however correcting that is the same as having a Marketing Pro/English Major proof copy before it is released.

About 15 years ago a Sun Exec/VP told me that if there is something wrong, you (meaning me) will find it. That was after a 2 week debacle with one of their products and every Sun tech, level 2 tech, executives in charge of their techs argued with me and finally the head tech of sun called me arguing as well.

 

I refused to talk to him since I knew he was not getting it either and asked to speak with the CEO at which time I got his assistant who had the Exec/VP call me. I then asked him if he personally had any programmer he would rely his company on and he said he did. I asked to get him on the phone. Guess who it was? Yes that last guy I had spoken to.

 

With the three way going, I asked the tech guy not to speak at all, do not comment or ask questions, just listen. His response was "OOOKAAYYYY" somewhat confused, so I asked the Sun Exec if that was ok with him and he said he did not really understand it but let's go with it.

 

I then started from scratch going through the "what I thought was a simple issue" and then proceeded with the simple resolve (which I normally don't do) since different companies have different ways of approaching things and often when they can see an issue or be notified of one, they can generally handle it. (Usually, but generally that is not the case with programmer owned companies unless they have brought in pros in the areas that do not involve programming (coding).

 

Anyway, the conversation took less than 5 minutes. I said good luck and good bye as did the Exec. Nothing heard from the tech other than the Exec then saying he is waving good bye. Didn't want to speak "I thought that was funny, but he took orders well which is why he was at the level he was at within Sun.

 

The next day I get a call from the tech guy asking me 1 question, I answer him and we hang up. That question told me they got it!

 

One day later I get a call from the Exec apologizing and thanking me. The tech was in his room and they were on speaker phone and he too apologized for our first conversation and thanking me for getting him to actually listen and not defend what was a very popular and successful product. He then told me it would be in the next release which they would send me.

 

Then the Exec told me "if there is something wrong, you will find it" and he was embarrassed that after it was found and put at their noses, they still did not see it, all of them. I told him that he now knows for sure what he is doing there. :)

 

It happened again with Lexus only 4 years ago but this time I only had to go to their Regional Sales guy in charge of 6 states.

 

The moral of the story. People "involved" don't listen, they defend.

Moral2: People even lie to themselves.
