Z-Wave 500 Upgrade Forgot to Disable Query on Restart

I got in a hurry and powered down my ISY before disabling the Query at restart as clearly stated in the instructions.

I replaced the z-wave board with the new 500 series board and booted up.

ISY Finder will eventually find my ISY, but the login will not come up when selecting admin console or dashboard.

I quickly realized my mistake and powered down the ISY, reinstalled the original z-wave board and booted back up.

Unfortunately, the ISY will still not allow me to login.  I assume I will need to do some sort of factory reset at this point, but first wanted to get advice from the forum on how to recover from my mistake.
I assume I would need to factory reset and restore with the original z-wave board then, re-attempt the upgrade.

I have recent ISY backups, my concern is the z-wave backup.  When I backed up the z-wave, it took a much longer time than a normal backup.  It did not ask me where to save the backup, so I assume it writes to the the sdcard.  Does a factory reset wipe that z-wave backup on the SD and/or is that z-wave info in a normal backup?

Thanks for the help and happy holidays,

Jeff

Michel,

I removed power, removed the dongle and rebooted.  Still could not connect to the ISY.
The ISY is not showing up as having an IP address on my router.  I checked the Ethernet connector and there are no lights flashing on my router showing a device connected or activity.
I tried another Ethernet cable and port, powered down the ISY and also pressed the reset button briefly once.
Still no communication or activity showing on the Ethernet port.

Thank you for your support,

Jeff

Michel,

ISY LED's boot fine.  Power LED is on, and TX is flickering. (After hitting reset, all lights came on during reboot)

On my router where Ethernet goes in, it shows when a device is connected and when there is activity.  That is where there is no LED activity.

It is like the ISY's Ethernet is not trying to communicate with the router...

I'm so sorry for wasting your time, I am an idiot.  I had the Ethernet plugged into the other Ethernet PORT A on the ISY...

Corrected Ethernet PORT: Rebooted and imported the z wave backup.  Everything seems to have upgraded fine.

Again, I am sorry for taking up your time.

Next project, better lighting around automation cabinet!

Happy holidays,

Jeff

The new Zwave dongle is currently available from   https://www.orchestratedhome.com/shop/pc/Z-wave-Radio-Add-on-Board-for-ISY-994i-116p368.htm

It requires the ISY 5.0.14 firmware

Quick related question.  I upgraded my ISY 994izw PRO to 5.0.14 from 4.7.3 successfully today, and have searched through the forum enough to see that my z-wave dongle is old and unable to be upgraded beyond v4.5.5.  I just ordered the new dongle from OrchestratedHome, but in the meantime, all of my z-wave devices have disappeared from the admin console.  Doing a Z-Wave / Tools / Syncronize nodes / All does nothing, and I've tried individually adding the devices back via Z-Wave / Add-Include a Z-Wave Device.  I've also tried excluding but the ISY doesn't see the devices that way either.

Is it impossible to use the older v4.5.5 dongle with the new 5.0.14 ISY firmware?  It's not a huge deal to me if that's the case.  I only have z-wave deadbolts on exterior doors, and a few lamp plug in modules, so I can wait until next week when the new dongle comes and rebuild.  I just want to make sure I haven't screwed myself (I did take a full ISY backup prior to upgrading from 4.7.3).  All of my Insteon devices and voice integration with Alexa still work fine, it's strictly z-wave.

Thanks!

Yes, the older dongle works just fine with 5.0.14 -- in fact, IMO it works BETTER than the new dongle (better range, fewer errors).

If there are advantages to having the new zwave plus on the dongle, it's not apparent in my network!  (I don't have locks, though -- perhaps it matters with locks?)

Interesting.  Well if that's the case, something is wrong with my configuration.  I'm at ISY 5.0.14 and z-wave 4.5.5, and not only did my z wave devices disappear after the upgrade (and following the instructions didn't bring them back)... but I can't manually re-add them individually.  I even reset the zwave to factory defaults and tried to add devices from a supposedly 'fresh' start, and the admin UI dialog just sits there... "waiting to discover z wave device".  Any ideas how to fix?  Thanks!

Did you follow the instructions listed below when you updated to 5.0.14?

-Wave migration from 4.x.x branch

All Z-Wave nodes will be recreated when migrating from 4.x.x. to the 5.x.x branch (they will retain the same Z-Wave address).  After the ISY has restarted with the new firmware installed:

1.  Start the Admin Console and do a Z-Wave -> Tools -> Synchronize Nodes -> All

  -  Do not open ‘Programs’ tab until step 2)

  -  This will add back all of the ISY nodes that were deleted at startup.

  -  If you have multichannel devices, you will see more nodes added

  -  After sync is complete, restart the Admin Console and go to step 2)

2.  Open the programs tab

  -  Most old Z-Wave device actions/conditions are automatically converted to the 5.0 framework

  -  Make sure to visually check all programs that contain Z-Wave device actions or conditions.

 -  Programs containing nodes from multichannel devices will have to updated

     -  Node addresses for multichannel devices change from ZW003_143 style to ZW003_002_143 (where _002_ is channel number)

  -  If everything looks good, save the program changes made by the migration.

3.  Make an ISY Backup

4.  If you are missing any Z-Wave devices you may have to exclude/include them again.  For battery devices, make sure they have communications turned on and try doing a synchronize again.

Yes, to the letter!  I’ve been in IT for 25 years, spent the past 15 at IBM as a cloud architect. I know how important it is with this things to follow 100% especially when it’s beta!!  I’m at a loss. I feel pretty sure that the problem is going to persist even after I upgrade the z wave dongle, if the 4.5.5 version should be working with 5.0.14. ?

In that case it's best to submit a support ticket.   They'll get you up and running.

Or, better yet, fellow xIBMer!

I am so very sorry to hear. The only reason Z-Wave | Tools | Synchronize | All would not bring back all the Z-Wave nodes is if the dongle has been factory reset say by trying to upgrade the firmware. Your Z-Wave firmware version of 4.54 is OK. Please to not try upgrading it.

At this point, unless you have a Z-Wave backup - and quite unfortunately - you will have to include them again, one at a time, starting with Exclude. If you cannot exclude your devices, then there's probably range issue. If you cannot exclude NONE of your devices, then please submit a ticket.

With kind regards,
Michel

Ha!  Yes, Michel, I left IBM in July to join ServiceNow, after nearly 15 years, and am loving the change.  THANKS for your email and advice above.  That worked.  After moving a z-wave lamp module into my computer closet right beside of the ISY, I was able to exlude it and re-add it successfully.  Not a big deal, I only have 4 more lamp modules and 4 deadbolts to add back.  I just wish I would've figured that out prior to spending $50 on the the new 500 series dongle.  But I guess that will future proof me for awhile longer.  Will I have to exlude/add all of my z-wave devices again after upgrading the dongle?

FWIW, I did not have to.  Additionally, after the upgrade, I was able to exclude and securely include a misbehaving Schlage lock in place, probably 60 feet away from the ISY (I do have several repeaters between the ISY and the lock).  The lock was misbehaving prior to the upgrade.

Yeah... all 4 of my z-wave deadbolts are a pain in the a$$.  They constantly lose communication with the ISY despite strategically placed repeaters between them, and the batteries in the lock die every couple of weeks (and I always find out when I'm locked out).  So that's good news... maybe the new dongle will fix that for me as well.  Thanks!

The more (non-battery) devices in your network, the better the mesh network works. I read that you have 4 lamp modules and a couple of locks. I suggest that you get a few Zwave plug-in devices and place these strategically between your ISY and your locks. It is likely that this will improve the connection with your locks.
