Inovelli Inovelli NZW36 Plug-In Switch Problem(?)

Hi all.  I have two Inovelli NZW36 switch modules located 6’ apart and 30’ from the ISY (there is a repeater in between them and the ISY).  I purchased them at different times, having totally different date codes.  Both devices randomly fail to respond to either an ON or OFF, about 1 in 5 tries.  I get no failure error of any kind on the Admin console.   In trouble shooting I replaced one of the Inovelli’s with a good old JASCO wall toggle switch.  The JASCO works 100% and the other Inovelli (6’ away) is flakey as it was before.  I then took the removed Inovelli, placed it about 5’ away from the ISY and it still is flakey.  I did heal the network each time I made a change.

My next step was to give the two Inovelli units to a friend to try who has a different high end brand controller.  They work fine for him, solid as a rock.

Attached is an event log.  I was hoping someone could give me some insite as to what it all means.  The log looks exactly the same for a working command as well as a failed command.  After playing with this problem for over a month, I have to believe that there is some sort of communication timing or message format problem.  Possibly the controller is just busy doing something else?

For background, I have 3 Mimo’s, 6 wall switches, and 5 battery door sensors.  All my programs are initiated and run on events so the ISY has lots of free time.  I am not using a 500 series Zwave PCB.  I am using 5.0.15 software and previously 5.0.14.

Thanks you for spending time to read this and any suggestions you may have.

Unfortunately all your friend's controller confirmed was that the units aren't bad. Due to environmental differences, what works in 1 house doesn't mean it would work in another.

From the information given, I would say you need another repeater. If it were me, I would add them close to the isy and turn them on/off from the console to see if they work. If they do, move them back and re-try after running a network heal. If they don't work then you most likely need another repeater.

Please note that one of the Inovelli units was 5' from the ISY and it still did not work.  If I need a repeater for this than something is wrong.  You may want to reread the post.

I was a big fan of Inovelli at the beginning but not that much anymore. It promised new products that never came and I too have had issues with their switches,

What I do like is that in a 3-way I can use a plain old standard switch as auxiliary with an Inovelli switch as main switch, and that is very useful in my home where one switch box is in a concrete wall with insufficient space for a Zwave  switch.

Generally Homeseer are my favorite switches.

Thanks all for the input.  I fixed the problem with a pair of GE Plug-In Switches from Lowes.

I did set up both Inovellis again about 5' foot from the ISY and exercised them with a test program turning them ON waiting a minute and turning them OFF.  Cycling every 10 minutes for an afternoon.  As I surmised, 1 out of 5 commands failed.  No more Inovelli.  I thought these kind of problems only existed with Insteon..

Asbril, I do like the Homeseer switch with RGB LED's.  They work great and shows me mailbox, gate and door status.

Thanks everyone for your input.  I always appreciate any tips, comments, etc.

I was just looking at the Homeseer HS-WD200+ switches and was wondering  if the LED reporting function works with ISY994.  I was just going to ask the forum when I saw your post.  How long have you had them and have you had any problems, any tips you want to share..  How good is the rebroadcast/ range extension function of these switches ( I am just asking)

I have had two since they first came out with no problems.  They have a lot of functionality that I don't use; dimmer, double click, etc.  One switch is in the same room as the ISY the other is about 20 feet away in a different room.  All the other wall switches in my home are JASCO (old faithful's).  One functions as a repeater to my garage, another 20' away.  I am vigilant about watching errors and generally have none from any of my wall switches.  I use the LEDs for door, gate, and mailbox status (open/closed).   You need to set configuration parameters within your programs to control the LED's.  The only thing I don't like is light colors like white & yellow are difficult to differentiate from an angle.  Good luck!

Here's some content about the using the sentinel LED on these switches.

I find that the switch works very well.  I use one in my office, which allows me, via the sentinel LEDs, to see at a glance if any doors are open in the house.  The only complaints I have are the there only two color choices (white and ivory), and that the supported ramp rates are in 1 second intervals.  Otherwise, it's a very nice competitor to Insteon dimmers.

I've got 3-4 of these.  They are ok.  My only downside is I can't detect on the ISY when someone turns it on locally at the button on the device.  The company was active on the board here when they started but seem to have disappeared.

Note that they responded to a reddit thread and mentioned an upgrade of the NW36 coming that will give power meter usage info.

Agreed. Inovelli's Eric was active in and attentive to the ISY forum, but I have not seen him for a long while. About a year ago, he announced exciting new products (dual loads and multiple scene switches) but these are no longer on their webpage. I have no issues with their plugin modules and I like their 3-way setup. But sometimes it is tough to include their wall switches in my ISY. Maybe it is tough to compete with the better known brands and that would be a pity.
