Can I swap my current ISY PRO for the ISY Pro IR with Zwave?  I need to add Zwave functionality.

I was thinking to do a backup and then restore on the new device....but Will i lose/need to re-purchase my network module?

My whole reason is to use the Shlage Connect which i now see is ZWave plus not zWave.  Hope thats not a problem

I did not know you could just add the board....

Has there been improvements to the ISY994 since i bought it 7 years ago?  I mean to say is their newer hardware that may by more reliable?  I am not opposed to getting a whole new unit if it is more reliable...I've been running my unit 24/7 for 7 years :)

Why would i want PolISY over ISY994?  Is it essentially a new version? or an expansion/companion to the ISY944?

They no longer offer the discount for pre release

With you running yours for 7 years, I doubt you can improve over reliability like that. With that said, there's no difference to warrant buying another one vs upgrading the one you have.

If you are planning on using nodeservers in order to incorporate 3rd party devices such as hue, harmony, Sonos, MyQ and more, then Polisy would be a good buy as it adds that capability to your ISY. Long term it will be able to replace your Isy instead of being an add-on device.

At the time, I have no plan to add devices from hue, harmony, etc....

I guess the best plan is to get the Zwave expansion card!

The PolISY is a newer box with a CPU and memory about 20-50 times the processing power. People are currently expanding the reach of ISY into many Ethernet/Internet and other protocols using PolyGlot, typically running on a RPi micro computer. This will be all incorporated into one box along with the ISY firmware.

I believe Zwave will be using a plug-in USB dongle and will not accommodate hardware from the older ISY boxes. ISY boxes may fall into obsolescence in a few years as support wanes. Since you already have a running ISY, I would wait before jumping into the same hardware you already have, when a huge upgrade is right under our noses.

Your wallet. If you have use for two machines or just don't want to spend the extra (without presale discounts), that presents a different argument.. Your plug-in firmware licenses and PLM will be transferred to the new hardware but that will likely discontinue it's permission on the original ISY.

Once you do, you'll regret not having done it earlier. Unless $ is a big issue, I'd go for Polisy

I'm still a bit confused.  My question is: will this replace my ISY994i?  If not now, in the future?  I will still be using insteon lights and zwave door locks.

It will in the future. I agree with the thoughts of getting the z-wave expansion card now and let your future desires to expand drive additional purchases.

This is not known for sure, at this time, but eventually you will dump your 8088, 8bit computer with MSDos,  and use a multicore 64 bit CPU with Windows 10.
Sure your 8 bit machine will do what it did before, but you will want more.

My point was, why spend more money on a Zwave card when it likely have a limited time for support? PolISY is not a pipe dream anymore. It is on the books to be delivered soon.

Did ISY994 replace ISY26?  Yes and no. You have to decide if ISY994 will support all the new Zwave gadgets you will want to add because you were  not happy with just your current Insteon devices. ISY994 will likely support you door locks but it will cost you money that could go toward future support coming.
I don't see many people very happy,  left behind using ISY26, and I see ISY994 being replaced in the same style, in about 2-3 years.

Actually. The ISY26 was replaced with the ISY99i. That was replaced by the ISY994i.

I have both an ISY26 and ISY99i in a storage bin.

I am very happy and excited to make the jump to more powerful hardware as a replacement not an addition to my ISY994i.  I will most certainly purchase it at that time!

All of this is being over thought. Michel has already stated the 994 is not going anywhere. At some point Polisy will be an all in 1 box but the 994 will continue to stick around for those who do not need the things that Polisy brings.

Since the op has already stated he has no desire for nodeservers, Polisy shouldn't even be part of the equation. Not only that, it may be 1 to 2 years (if not longer) before the ISY gets ported over. Not really worth waiting to install locks to save 50 bucks.

If money is tight, then choose the cheapest option. If not go for Polisy. When the first Iphone came out, many said that their old phone was good enough. Nowadays 99 % of the people want a smart phone. You may not see the need for nodeservers now. I was that way and I had no understanding of Polyglot, Raspberry and nodeservers until some great people in this forum pushed and guided me. I don't look back and Polisy is where you should go if you can afford it.

If ISY is not ported to Polisys then its like having an iPhone that does not make phone calls.  no? also, we are so way way off topic.  You all are the best, so very happy to be on or off topic./

It's my understanding that Polisy is ISY + Polyglot in one device. As such very much ON topic....... and yes very happy :D

Not yet it's not. Currently Polisy is only a box to run your node servers on, basically an expensive Raspberry Pi. In the future it will also combine the ISY function, but we currently have no idea when that is... it will certainly not be the case on launch day.

To clarify geisen and others above (including myself)

  • The first PolISYs delivered will serve only as a ready-to-go local nodeserver - Polyglot and Nodelink ... that's all.
  • As delivered, they will not initially have ISY994I replacement capability.. its been stated in numerous threads by UDI that it is a longer term goal
  • Today, the best option based on the original request by the OP is to order and install the ISY994I zwave card to their existing ISY

LOL! OK...let me backpaddle here!

@asbril They were correct about PolISY not likely coming with ISY installed immediately. I found this on the UDI website.

  1. Given that I don’t know what “over time” means, should I recommend that he get a Polisy under the current discount or will he also need to get an ISY 994? His installation is scheduled for November, 2019.

    Regards,
    Greg

    Hi Greg,
By November, he would still need an ISY in addition to Polisy. If he’s going to use node servers, it’s best to get Polisy under the discount now. If not, then there’s really no rush.
    With kind regards,
    Michel

@uffy I concede! Get the Zwave plug-in card. PolISY may be a while and the card is only $40ish.
