Mail Server Failure

I am trying to setup my ISY-99i.  I am using it as a water leak sensor system.  My main problem is setting up the notifications via email.  I have tried my Gmail and Outlook addresses and the Default option.  When I use Hotmail or Gmail and try to test it, I instantly get the following message "Mail Server Failure [TLS negotiation failed]".  If I use the Default option, I get the following message after a 2 second delay "Mail server failure [To timed out]".

I have two factor verification on both my email accounts (Gmail and Outlook).  I have "allowed" my accounts to use SMTP or POP but this hasn't fixed the issue. I also turned the two factor verification off on my outlook account and this didn't fix the problem.

The settings I used for my Outlook account was the following:  SMTP Server: smtp.office365.com/ SMTP Port: 587/My USERID and Password/From:My Firstname Lastname:email address/Timeout: [here I tried 1000, 2000, 3000 and 5000 ms timeouts]

My ISY-99i hub is connected to an ASUS router.  The ASUS router is connected to my internet provider's modem/router.

I don't really know how to fix this but if I can't get the notification system setup it will prove rather a waste of time and money.

Thanks for your help.

Which service do you prefer to use? I use the Gmail setup and it is fairly straight forward. Even with 2 factor verification on.

Key - with 2 factor authentication active you'll need an app specific password (https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833?hl=en)

SMTP:  smtp.gmail.com

SMTP Port: 587  (I'm on Comcast, and it allows messages to pass)

User ID:  You'r full gmail address

Password: App Specific password

From  full gmail address (Or be sure to follow the "first-name last-name:email-address" format (I added a "-ISY" to my name so I could filter on my receiving address to filter ISY messages and clearly see when the ISY was sending me notifications on my phone)

Use TLS:  Checked

What UI/Firmware are you running? And are you really using an old 99i or do you mean a newer 994i?

Perhaps post a screen shot (be sure to block out personal info) to be sure what settings you have.

Hi Geddy,

Thanks for your help.  I tried Gmail as you described (with an app specific password) and got the same result (“Mail Server Failure TLS negotiation failure”.

So then I connected my ISY to my internet provider’s modem/router and I tried it.  I didn’t get an error message but I also didn’t receive a notification.  So I think it is a port forwarding problem between my router and the provider’s router/modem.  Having by-passed that problem, however, I still don’t seem to be sending out notifications.

This is what I’m working with in terms of the hardware/firmware.

I a sure this is the older ISY model.

Your hardware Is outdated. The ISY99i has been discontinued and is no longer supported. You might want to check with UDI about upgrading to the latest hardware and firmware.

@Daquitaine

Well, indeed you've got old hardware that isn't supported or updated. I never had the old model so don't know if it worked the same way or not. Your UI/Firmware don't match so you're risking other errors. As @Techman mentioned you should contact UDI to buy current supported hardware. Once you're up and running with new equipment you're probably going to have a better chance of things working as we expect them these days.

Sorry my setup couldn't help get you running. Glad the error went away when connected directly to the modem though. But, still not getting the notification might be an issue. That could be an issue with UI/Firmware mismatch.

Is all you are wanting to do is check for water leaks? I probably wouldn't suggest an ISY option for that, at least not as the only method. I've had very little success with wireless water sensors. There are other methods that tie in directly to water lines that are more accurate and can actually shut off the water supply to try to limit damage. I've heard great things about the Moen Flo system (https://www.moen.com/flo), but know there are others, and think some have been talked about elsewhere in this forum. Some might integrate with the ISY (current hardware and latest Firmware) so you can have it included in other home automation systems.

Good luck!

Thank you Techman and Geddy.

I guess I'll look at the newer hardware and that might make my life easier.

In terms of the water leak monitors, I am looking at a system that attaches to the water main and can automatically close it if it detects a leak.  I have looked at Phyn plus and the Moen Flo system.  There are some that are designed to work with smart home leak sensors but I'm not sure I will do that because I don't know how reliable these insteon leak sensors are.  I got them a while back and just haven't and was given the ISY by my brother.  Anyway I might try get the newer hardware and see what else I can automate around the house.

Thanks again for your help.
