Help with "updating" my ISY.

Recommended Posts

Good evening,

I am trying to control an outdoor switch (Smart WiFi Indoor/Outdoor Plug MSS620HK / MSS620 US) witch led me to try to down load the UD app on my phone.  I then learned that I need to update my firm where, but before I do that my "Admin Panel".   Why this is not done automatically is odd to me but, I have no idea where to start  I read the thread about updating, and it seemed that i need a degree in IT to get through this, it also states that I need to update my admin panel.... what and where is my admin panel?  I only dabble in home automation and the last time I set it all up was about 18 to 24.  Hoping I can get a little guidance.

Thanks for your help

For starters, are you using a 994i ISY? If you are on a previous version of ISY none of the current stuff is supported, as it is end of life.

Do you know what firmware version you are running now? How do you normal access your ISY? Is it from ISY Launcher?

If you are using ISY Launcher, then when you click on your ISY it lets you choose to load Dashboard or Admin Console. If you are accessing it from a IP address go to Help - About from the menu.

If you are accessing from the portal, go to Select Tools - ISY Web Access then Help - About.

Once we know your firmware version, we can give you more instructions.

To use UD Mobile app you need to be running v5 firmware. If you are still on v4 firmware, updating to v5 takes a bit of prep time and some verification time after the upgrade.

However, there is another app from the same author called Go2ISY which will run on v4 firmware.

Also, you should be using the ISY Launcher to access your ISY. The Launcher will select the correct UI so you don't need to worry about updating the admin console part, which really is UI related. To use the Launcher go to the upgrade post for your firmware version and follow instructions to download and install Launcher.

That device is not compatible with the isy.

Thanks for the info. So here is what I have.

Model: ISY 994i 1024 IR
Platform: ISY-C-994
Version: 4.5.1
Build Timestamp: 2016-06-15-14:06:00
I "normally" do not access my ISY except when I get a wild hair to add something of change somethin which apparently is about every 2 years. In witch case I need to relearn how to do it.  This is the first time I have run into this updating issue.    So it sounds like basically if I want to use the UD mobile app I need to update to 5, and that will not be a walk in the park but is doable.   If I want to add a mobile app to control my current ISY I can try the GO2ISY app.
Any benefits other than the mobile app to updating the firm where?  I will first work on the launcher upgrade as I have always gone to ISY portal then My ISY from there. I am assuming nether of those are the Launcher.

lilyoyo- thanks for the response I will keep looking for another option. Outdoor outlet.

To clarify the response from lilyoyo1, this device is not "natively" compatible with the ISY.  Having said this, your original device could potentially work via amazon alexa or the google portal (requires portal subscription from universal devices).  Alternatively, there is a possibility you could directly control it via a network resource.  Having said all this, I think there are better options available.

Also, be aware (if not already) that there is a whole section in this forum regarding latest software version, which includes an overview of the update process in some of the threads:

https://forum.universal-devices.com/forum/15-current-release-betas-and-bug-reports/

Regarding the benefits of updating the firmware....it allows you to connect to devices that did not exist and to do things nobody could even envision when you initially purchased your ISY.  This includes new insteon devices, z-wave devices, connection to alexa and google home, and connection to the latest mobile apps.  In addition, for those willing to get into additional hardware, you can connect to hue lighting, harmony remotes, Sonos systems, Lifx bulbs, luton caseta devices, roomba vacuums, MyQ garage door openers, some thermostats, etc...

The update to version 5 software will not be trivial, if your experience is like mine.  Though, in fairness, much of my update problems were associated with my z-wave devices.  Still, you can expect the need to go through each of your programs to make sure that they translated properly and update them if not.  I understand you will have to upgrade in steps.  It looks like a direct upgrade to 5.3 from v4 software would violate the instructions that I see.

I had no serious issues with my updates (and I am exclusively Zwave) , but basically I went step-by-step upgrading every time there was an update and not going straight from 4.X to 5.3. Some times with  small steps you go faster than with big ones ?

Well, part of my problems may have been associated with rplacing -300 series baord with -500.  Most of my zwave problems were associated with recent versions.

Ok, well let me ask you this,

Given at age of my version and the fact that I only run 3 keypads + 5 switches and one outlet.  All together I have 4 preset scenes (one on time every day and 2 voice controlled via echo) all insteon for now.  I plan to add to the system in the next 4 months so several current presets will change. (more insteon, a weather station, and possibly irrigation.  Would it be easer to just start from scratch?  Is there a way to just erase the current version and start clean with newest version.

Also, I tried to down load the launcher with no luck, first it had me clear the Java cash.... I don't have Java on here. Then it gave me an error message after a warning that the program could damage my computer....

Any thoughts on either ,

Thanks

Tim

A bit more info,

When I go to the link provided above,  https://forum.universal-devices.com/forum/15-current-release-betas-and-bug-reports/  I see there ate to I should down load the newest version and the several below the launcher.  when I click on the launcher, shipping the clear Java step because I don't have Java on my computer, I get this,

This type of file may harm your computer."

I don’t know that it would be easier to start from scratch, but the limited number of devices and scenes makes me optimistic that your troubles will be few and easy to identify correct, if there are any.

As far as I know, the launcher only works on newer versions of the software.  For earlier versions, there was an associated launcher.  You may have to go back in the forum and find the announcement for your version.  Hopefully, a link to the correct launcher will still be there and still work.

Yes, the loading of java could cause a warning.  I assume there is some security issue with this, but don’t know how serious.  I believe this is why there are periodic complaints about the continued reliance on java.  Personally, I have not experienced any problems that I can trace to java, but I am probably not a hogh value target.
