Clean eisy Install

I may be premature to ask these questions, but I’ve been limping along the last 4 months on my 994 since the PLM died, so I am definitely overanxious for eisy’s arrival and my brain has moved into planning mode!

At issue is since ditching Insteon, I’m now at roughly 50 Z-Wave devices, my ISY randomly goes into “system busy” 15 or so times a day, which has a noticeable and detrimental impact (to my wife especially who cannot tolerate turning on a switch when the pantry or other light doesn’t come on automatically, although it is also annoying for me when I get home to find the pool equipment didn't turn on).

Without going into my theories, and efforts to diagnose and remedy, I want to set up eisy from scatch, fully recognizing the time/effort involved (~100 programs).

The question is what do I need to do with my Z-Wave devices?  Do I have to exclude them all from ISY before I retire it and bring eisy online?  And would this require uninstalling the switch/device to bring it close to ISY?  Or would I have to uninstall them anyway to add them close to eisy?

Do I need to factory reset each Z-Wave device?  Does a factory reset take the place of “excluding” on ISY?

And lastly is possible or harmful to keep ISY and eisy both online at the same time to gradually move devices from ISY to eisy, or is this an all at once thing?

The bottom line is I want to make certain I follow the best practice so I start with a pristine environment for eisy.

I don't think you have to exclude from ISY first, just do an exclude with EISY (which should also reset the device), and then an include. There is also usually a factory reset procedure for Z-Wave devices to reset without a controller.

If you want to gradually move Z-Wave devices over from ISY, then exclude from ISY first instead.

There's a lot of what ifs with zwave so there is no right or wrong answer. Depending on the devices you have, you may be able to leave them in place to exclude and re-add. If not, you'll run into issues with including.

Eisy can do the excluding. The Isy isn't needed for that. You can also factory reset your device as well.

If all of your devices support network wide inclusion, then you'll probably be fine. Since every situation is unique, I can't say whether or not you'll need to move the eisy around (or bring devices closer) in order to exclude and re-add.

In general, youll exclude the farthest devices first and include starting with the closest.

I don't recommend trying to run dual systems during this process. Zwave devices uses routed messages so the likelihood of running into issues will go up. Not saying that it cant be done, just that you're more likely to have issues than not during the process. If you think your wife is upset now, wait until you have competing networks and broken routes thrown in.

I just took the plunge and ordered the "whole left side of the menu" for Eisy:  Eisy, matter USB, and PLM adapter.  Funny I was thinking the exact same thing as original poster when I came across this post.

So what is the consensus on migrating over to Eisy from ISY?  I was thinking:

  1. Backup from ISY and restore config to Easy.  Not the zwave restore.
  2. Ensure all config looks correct in Eisy and can connect to ELK, variables are in there, programs etcs. Disable all programs in Eisy until I get the zwave devices updated in them to prevent errors in Eisy.
  3. I was thinking of keeping both boxes up and migrating device by device starting closest to box to easy and updating programs in Eisy to use the new device.  But, seeing last post Im rethinking.  So for step two, factory reset all zwave devices up front.
  4. I would not think I would need to do an exclude now from Eisy as it should not be in the Eisy zWave controller.  So I would just include each factory reset devices one at a time starting from closest device.  Then add that device in Eisy to each program that used it in ISY.
  5. Rinse wash repeat until all zwaves are in Eisy.

What about my Insteon leak detectors.  Is it the same process?

Thoughts on the approach above or anyone got a better idea?

A2Z -i'm about the same place today that you were last month. If you received all of your components, can you comment on performance, ease to convert, etc.? Also really wondering about range of the zwave matter module. silab's 700 supposedly is 1/2 the range of 800. So, wonder if the U.D. will at some point make the zwave device that works with eisy capable of a huge upgrade to 800.

trying to see what is coming and how well this may work over my 994i.

thanks

Most likely it'll be a hardware change since the 800 series would require new hardware. Regardless, that would be a few years from now.
