Start Over

Hi

My system was running find until a storm last summer. It took out my PLM. I have finally found a replacement PLM. However after installation everything went a little sideways. I ended up updating firmware and UI to v5.3.4.

I had to reinstall all of my devices because they would have there six digit address but with a 7th digit (#1) behind them. Both of my wireless motion sensors and garage door relay won't connect I get an error message Cannot Determine Insteon Engine. After rebooting I do get communication from garage door sensor that is is open, but I cannot see it on admin console or connect to to it. Also, many programs have a status of "Out of memory".

At this point I just want to restart and start from ground zero.

I have an ISY 994i. What firmware should I be running?

Thanks for any help.

@GRoehrborn"Cannot determine Insteon engine" is typically related to communications not there.  And I've too expierenced "Out of memory" when it is actually a communications failure.  Does your ISY see the PLM?  You may try relocating the PLM, plugging it into a different outlet, away from any transformers, not behind a UPS or surge suppressor, all the basic comm failure stuff.  I just went through what you describe with my old PLM on a new eisy, and it does appear it was comm related.  Did you initialize the new PLM?

In the notes of the 5.3.4 section it says you'll need to verify your programs. Most likely something has changed with some of your programs so you'll need to update them. It may be as simple as clicking on a line in your program, clicking update, and saving. The problem programs are usually in yellow.

You may also need to update your java runtime memory (also found in the notes for the upgrade with instructions on how to do so).

If you're having problems with wireless devices, make sure that it's in linking mode when trying to restore them. If you're trying to re-add your wireless devices, make sure that you're typing the address in correctly. An 8 may be a B or D for example.

There may be comm issues with your iolinc. Bring it closer to your plm, restore it, and then hook it back up.

Thanks

I do have the addresses entered correctly. The ISY is seeing the PLM because other devices and programs are working. I also did clear the java cache and downloaded the IoX Launcher.

Why is there a 7th digit in address? Flag Pole has a #1 and Motion sensor has a #2?

Do I just need to un-install Java and Iox. Then restart the ISY and enter all of the devices again?

Thanks

that's quite normal.  all devices actually have an extra digit, for simple devices it's always 1, for multi-node devices each (such as the motion detector) each node with have a different 7th digit.

The first step to debugging this should be from the admin console can you operate the flagpole light via the image.png.59dadd609599bf1799d5b03c83825636.png buttons on the device page?  Second question, can you open the dusk.dawn node of the device tree and see the node status during the day and after dark correctly?

My bet is one or the other device isn't working correctly.

Yes I can toggle flagpole light from the admin console. The ISY will not connect to both my front motion sensor or back motion sensor. After upgrading I had to reinstall of the devices to make them communicate with the new PLM. The motion sensors were working until I upgraded the firmware. I removed the back motion sensor and then tried to reinstall and I get cannot communicate to Insteon Engine.

I cannot connect to either motion sensors or garage door control and status module.

When I click on my network should the PLM be displayed? I currently to not see it.

Tool > Diagnostics > PLM Info/status is the only place you will see the PLM.

When you try to re-add the device are you using Link Management > Start linking or Link Management > New Insteon Device?  If the latter are you leaving the "device type" dropdown on Auto Detect?  If you haven't tried the "start linking" method please try that.    Also can you bring the device so that it's next to the PLM when you add it?   Finally have you tried factory resetting the battery devices?

That's a lot of questions, sorry, some perhaps you've already answered.. I'm just trying to get you back in business.

I have tried both New Insteon Device and Link Management. For motion sensor I did - Link a Sensor and selected Motion sensor. Same result. I have installed new batteries in motion sensors and tried the factory resetting.

I have the most luck with New Insteon Device and leave the drop down on auto detect device type. Have to watch out for 0 / D and B / 8 in the device address tho because they are easy to confuse because of the font used on the label.  The Start linking method avoids those issues, but I have trouble getting especially battery devices to link using this method.

You mentioned many programs have "out of memory"... typically that indicates mis-matched firmware and UI.. Help > About the firmware and UI must match exactly.  I missed that no one had addressed that fact after your first post above, and this might prevent you from being able to add devices.

Thanks MrBill. Everything matches.

I think I am going to restart. I feel that something must be corrupt internally. Is there any steps on the most effective way to start over?

if you think you have firmware corruption... doubtful.. just reload 5.3.4 over your current 5.3.4.

I don't think factory reset is going to help you get beyond this issue.. likely either your PLM is on the way out or you have a corrupt SD card in the ISY.
