Family accounts? - Kitchen doesn't support that erro

Featured Replies

My wife setup our alexa in our kitchen, I am setup as a family member and have my own account.

I setup the alexa skill and I am able to create devices and they show up in my alexa app.

Now on the echo show that's my wife's most of them work, but some like 'kitchen lights' Scene the Show says 'Kitchen doesn't support that'

When I do it from the Alexa app on my phone it works just fine.  Why would this be?

Also often when I test on the show it says "it looks like you are trying to control this from another household account do you want me to ...(I forget and cannot trigger now)"  Any idea what that is?

Ok I found about profiles and it looks like Alexa is kinda dumb about shared devices like echo's.

If I say switch profiles it switches to me and now works and it stops prompting for that 'other household' stuff.

Is the right way to do this to remove all the skills form my alxis account and re-do them all against my wife?

I don't know the purpose of having two account would be but ours asked us about each voice a few years ago. Now it recognises each of our voices just to act personal. I do not see any purpose for it.

After many years usi g ten Alexa boxes I thought I would try asdigning devices to room groups as they constantly pestered me to do. For already named devices that is a mistake as a device named 'kitchen lights' and a room named 'kitchen' totally confuses Alexa and I get back that 'kitchen doesn't support that'
or
'there is no such device named kitchen'

Just in general appears not a well designed permission systems, in general half baked.  Thanks for the thoughts I'm mostly bumping to see if there are any other ways people have addressed this.

Larry, I use rooms / groups on my Alexa.  I too have items named like "kitchen cans" or Kitchen table... When talking to the Alexa that has that item in its group, leave off the Kitchen and it works. Same with the scenes. When talking to another Alexa and want to control a light in another room, you add the room name in your command.

This works well for me except in one odd case where I have three rooms: kitchen, family room, bedroom. Each one has an "evening" scene, a "mood" scene and a "nightlight". For some reason if I leave off the room name for Mood, Alexa gets confused. Works just fine for evening or nightlight in each room, but not for mood. Go figure.

See below screen shots of the group Kitchen from the Alexa App.
