No luck migrating from Zooz to ZMatter

Featured Replies

I have had a ZMatter dongle plugged into a test Polisy for some time, for trying out Zwave devices. Now I'd like to move it to my eisy (which is my house controller) to replace the Zooz dongle I've been using since last fall. I started by doing a factory reset of the ZMatter dongle in the Polisy. I'm following all the wiki steps for the migration process, creating a migration backup, etc. Then I restore the migration backup and switch the dongles right before the IoX restart, and let it restart. But the devices don't update. It does rename the nodes to ZY... as discussed in some forum threads, but it appears the interview process is failing. All I get are placeholder nodes. I tried the interview manually on some devices but I get errors in the /var/isy/FILES/LOG/ZWAY.LOG file, as shown below.

Thankfully restoring from the pre-upgrade backup and plugging the Zooz dongle back in works, but I'd like to be able to complete this migration. Any hints as to what might be wrong? I've gone through the whole process twice, with the same results.

Retesting the ZMatter dongle with the Polisy works fine, so it's functional.

I'd like to add that with the ZMatter dongle plugged into the eisy, I also tried adding a new ZWave device. It detects the device when I press the button on it, but the interview also seems to fail.

Unfortunately, I have never tried such a migration (have always use the zwave boards from UDI), so I will be of very-limited assistance. Still, a couple of things come to my fuzzy memory about zwave....

  • I was not sure that a backup from a zooz dongle could be used to populate a zmatter dongle. (This was just something I thought I saw somewhere. My confidence is not high.)

  • If a zwave device is already linked to a network (zooz dongle, for example), I did not think that device could be then added to another (such as zmatter) without removing it from the original. I wonder if the error messages you are seeing are an indication of this.

The migration process has you create a "migration backup", which is different from a regular IoX backup. This is part of the process you get when you click on the "Migrate to ZMatter" button in the Configuration screen. You then restore this backup, which prompts you to restart IoX. This is when you switch dongles, as per the wiki article. The process updates the ZMatter dongle with your existing devices. That seems to work, but cannot seem to interview them.

Just a thought, before creating the migration backup, did you perform the required zwave backup?

There is no zwave backup option with the Zooz dongle. That menu choice only appears when you have the ZMatter dongle. The migration process also doesn't mention doing a zwave backup. Instead it has you do a IoX migration backup. From here:

There use to be. When I migrated my 994 to easy, on two systems with the Zooz dongle, I successfully migrated then both.

If you don't get a zwave backup you will not migrate your zwave devices correctly.

Yes it does:

Preparing for Migration from ISY-994

On your ISY-994

Make sure the ISY-994 has firmware 4.x or 5.x,

If you are migrating your Z-Wave network

You must be using a 500 Series Board in the ISY-994

Make a backup of your Z-Wave network (Admin Console | Z-Wave | Backup)

Make a backup of your ISY-994 (Admin Console | File | Backup ISY)

Thing is, I'm not migrating from a ISY994i. I'm migrating from the Zooz dongle to ZMatter. On a eisy.

I don't think UD built a backup for that possibility. I think you will need to re-add all your devices.

The only way to know for sure will be to ask UD via a support ticket.

Well the procedure in the link above does explain what to do, including the migration backup (you get that option when you click on "Migrate to ZMatter" in the Configuration screen. That page needs careful reading because it explains several types of migrations all in one long text. Here is the relevant part:

Preparing for Migration from Eisy / Polisy

You can migrate locally on the same Eisy / Polisy or to another Eisy / Polisy.

On the Eisy / Polisy your are migrating from

  1. Make sure Eisy / Polisy is up to date

    • Go to Admin Console configuration page and select Upgrade Packages

  2. If you are not migrating your Z-Wave network

    • Use (Admin Console | File | Backup ISY) to make a backup of your Eisy / Polisy

  3. If you are migrating your Z-Wave network

    • Leave your current Z-Wave board / dongle connected

    • Go to configuration tab in Admin Console and select "Migrate to ZMatter Z-Wave"

    • Choose the option that allows you to create a "migration" backup (first option)

    • You will see a series of popup windows providing information and asking simple questions

    • Once you have your "migration" backup you are ready to migrate

    • A migration backup is different than a regular backup.

    • When a migration backup is restored it also migrates your Z-Wave network

Migrating

On the Eisy / Polisy you are migrating to

  1. Do the appropriate preparation step (see above)

  2. Make sure Eisy / Polisy is up to date

    • Go to Admin Console configuration page and select update packages

  3. If you don't have a current backup, make a backup of your Eisy / Polisy (Admin Console | File | Backup ISY)

  4. If you are using Insteon, plug in the PLM

  5. If you are not migrating your Z-Wave network

    • Use (Admin Console | File | Restore IoX) to restore either your Eisy / Polisy backup or your ISY-994 backup

  6. If you are migrating your Z-Wave network

    • If you aren't already using it, plug in your ZMatter Z-Wave dongle and unplug any other Z-Wave dongle you may have been using.

    • (Polisy only) If you have a ZMatter Z-Wave board then power down Polisy, add it, then power on again.

    • Reboot Eisy / Polisy

    • Use (Admin Console | File | Restore IoX) to restore your "migration" backup

    • If you are migrating from Eisy / Polisy use the migration backup (e.g. "ISY-BackupWithZWaveMigration.v5.5.4__Sat 2023.01.21 09.07.44 AM")

    • If you are migrating from ISY-994 use your ISY-994 backup

    • When IoX restarts, it automatically does the following:

    • Writes you Z-Wave network into the ZMatter Z-Wave controller

    • Interviews every Z-Wave device in the Z-Wave nework, creating/updating nodes, programs and scenes.

    • This process can take anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes for each device depending on the complexity of the device.

    • The best way to monitor the progress is to open the Admin Console Event Viewer to level 3

    • For those who want lots of low-level details, you can also use this from the command line: tail -f /var/isy/FILES/LOG/ZWAY.LOG

    • If you don't actually change your Z-Wave network by adding/removing Z-Wave devices after migration, you can back out the migration by connecting whatever Z-Wave dongle you were using before migration and restoring the backup you made prior to migration.

My latest test: I tried doing the migration to a test Polisy (yup, "upgrade" from a eisy to a Polisy!). Same result. If I factory reset the ZMatter dongle, which deletes all the existing zwave devices, I can then add devices to it. But migrating existing devices just doesn't work. So at least I have a painful plan B: manually add back all the devices, and modify all the programs. That's 5 locks and about 6 to 8 appliance modules. Not fun.

Has anyone ever successfully migrated from a Zooz dongle to ZMatter, on a eisy or Polisy?
