sloop Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 cause smarthome is ghetto wanted to thank michel again for his isy - insteon is unusable without it after a year or so of looking at a crapped out craplink, i replaced it - the swap worked, even though none of my other craplinks support extended messaging have not even pulled up the admin console in like for EVER - forgot how to set the local ramp rates and on levels, but i'll dig into it in a year or so again, thanks michel - you rawk
Mark Sanctuary Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Can you believe the nerve of that sloop guy, he dares to say he hates smarthome! Hey dude, long time no see! I also had a crapped out setup! I ended up having to replace all 26 of my switches. Just so you know that if your switches are older than 2008 you can have them replaced because smarthome extended the warranty by 6 years because of the issues with them. Here is my story of it all... http://forum.universal-devices.com/viewtopic.php?t=4848 Plus you should upgrade your ISY to the latest firmware, lots has changed since then! When everything is working correctly its fun stuff!
sloop Posted September 15, 2010 Author Posted September 15, 2010 like a fool, i paid for the extended warranty on all my craplincs - i asked what i got for that money and was told that the paddle failure extended warranty only covers the paddle problem failure (that does not exist) i am more on the 'i expect a switch to work like they said it would' category - but them i also expect a vendor to not lie to me too - and to confess when their credit card info was hacked - and admit problems - and inform me when they can't meet deadlines - and not to lead me to believe their product supports functions that the product does not - and on and on and on the reality is that i don't know what does not work - i use little of the house and have the isy bring up 2 lights at dusk and trun them off later - i have noticed the led was off on this craplinc as i would pass through the room so i tried to reset it - still would not work i wanted to set up my lighting and forget about it - i don't tinker with it - its not a hobby - i was thinking practicality - i hate, hate, hate to replace switches (which is why i left it for a year, lol) - if i had to replace them all, i'd put in a product line that worked
Brian H Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Hi sloop; Long time since we exchanged messages in various forums. I am still using Insteon, but if it was not for my ISY99i. I may have been using a diffferent protocol setup by now.
Mark Sanctuary Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 I have not researched other options that much...what are the other ones? HAI, ELK... Don't they all have the own baggage too? I think the hardest part about the INSTEON is the link management and issues with the links. Without the ISY its near imposable to do a reliable install.
sloop Posted September 15, 2010 Author Posted September 15, 2010 upb - zwave - not sure - i have not kept abreast of the industry they might be missing some functions of craplincs, but the functions they do provide work and the vendors are reputable
Mark Sanctuary Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 I think the issue with the other ones have been they where closed systems that you had to use their installers. I guess now they are starting to embrace DIY community. Maybe this is INSTEONs best achievement... opening up the DIY market. http://forum.universal-devices.com/view ... 0188#30188
sloop Posted September 15, 2010 Author Posted September 15, 2010 what? what systems required professional installs?
Mark Sanctuary Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 HAI I thought was a closed system, but now you can get their switches on smarthome. http://homeauto.com
sloop Posted September 15, 2010 Author Posted September 15, 2010 that is one i guess i don't think that has been the problem with upb or z/wave devices - they are successful the problem with craplincs is the manufacturer and the craplincs themselves but if you are referring to craplinc retailing, i see lampsplus dropped that junk - and home depot lost me as a customer after they refused to post my review - i won the battle but only after hours on the phone and refusing their bribe if i would drop the post craplincs are junk - the manufacturer is less than honest - people deserve to know
sloop Posted September 16, 2010 Author Posted September 16, 2010 i never saw them in a store - but they were online - one of those deals where if you buy from them, good luck getting a warranty honored
Mark Sanctuary Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 Now I think I recall hearing about online only with home depot. Your correct when you say getting warranty honored is horrible when bought from another vendor. I guess I had dumb luck (too lazy to search for deals and just went direct to smarthome) when I bought all my devices, I never got the extended warranties, I only bought ICON devices, and somehow they replaced every single switch I own. I feel lucky that I got to do that when I hear that others have run into the same as you have. So sorry friend. What is the state of all the rest of your switches?
sloop Posted September 16, 2010 Author Posted September 16, 2010 kinda unknown - lol - like i said, i use very little of that house - i bet most have never been touched for well over a year i am impressed, however, that my isy has not been touched either and it does not need to be touched - around dst change, i noticed it was off for awhile by an hour - i am confident that if i had updated the firmware, it would be taken care of i think i did update the firmware once - guess i should do it again
Michel Kohanim Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 Hey sloop! Welcome back!!! I see that not much has changed ... in any case 1) I am so very glad you're back on our forum and 2) hopefully we can help you hate SmartHome a little less! With kind regards, Michel
Illusion Posted November 26, 2010 Posted November 26, 2010 I miss Sloop and his humorous rants. You know, it is kinda sad. He wanted a system to just work, not a hobby, and now that it has matured Insteon is pretty darn close. Although, I think for it really to get completely out of the hobby level you are still forced into a professional system with mandated professional install. And a service call every time you come up with a new idea of how you want your scenes to look, or to what they respond. At the time (2008) he had such a crazy big system, and now some of us have such big systems we cannot get a PLM with enough capacity. I have well over 300 programs, even though I do not have a crazy number of Insteon devices. Craplincs... I still love that one.
Brian H Posted November 26, 2010 Posted November 26, 2010 I also see Digger in some of the other automation forums. Sloop and Digger to name a few did liven things up.
gatchel Posted November 26, 2010 Posted November 26, 2010 I love sloop and digger in a totally non wierd kinda way. They made the forums interesting. They also spoke the truth, which is hard to find these days. I too believe that the ISY makes up for insteons shortcomings. Thank you UDI. It's a shame that I had to buy Poherhome and Houlslinc1 and 2 before figuring it out... Smarthome should be cutting in UDI on all sales of insteon as a remote developers and beta testing group
Guest Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 Just to liven things up........ just kidding. My opinion the single thing that saved Insteon was the ISY. I will admit though that SH is starting to meet the original marketing of "Dual Band" and MAYBE even ever so slightly "reliable" (probably the ISY helps the most with that). I think they finally realized that they could not overcome poweline noise with such a small 5 v signal so they are making everything dual band which eventually it will probably solve a lot of the communication problems. Quality, well, we wont go there. Fortunately I moved on to UPB and I have not lost a device yet. To some degree its boring LOL. And the ISY for UPB will be awesome when its released (cant say anything more).
sfhutchi Posted September 25, 2011 Posted September 25, 2011 Wow... I guess I missed that. I'll have to check out the notices that you mention and see if I can get any money back for ones that I replaced over the years. Can you believe the nerve of that sloop guy, he dares to say he hates smarthome! Hey dude, long time no see! I also had a crapped out setup! I ended up having to replace all 26 of my switches.
