jmed999 Posted September 9, 2012 Posted September 9, 2012 In the Elk documentation it mentions a lighting interface connection. It is a phone cable connected to a powerline interface. DO you guys us this? If so, do you use this for the lighting interface connector? http://www.smarthome.com/2410S/SeriaLinc-INSTEON-to-2-Way-RS232-Serial-Converter/p.aspx
apostolakisl Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 No. Elk tells ISY what to do via the XEP.
jmed999 Posted September 10, 2012 Author Posted September 10, 2012 So you guys are using the Elk to control the ISY? Do you still use the ISY at all like for programs?
apostolakisl Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 OK, let be more clear. In the event that you don't have the elk module and you want an Elk event to control lighting, then you do it this way via an Elk rule. It is also a 2 way street so that Elk can know what lighting commands have been issued.
jmed999 Posted September 10, 2012 Author Posted September 10, 2012 I understood that....I was asking a different question... Do you use ISY to control the Elk or the Elk to control the ISY? I have both but I haven't installed the Elk M1 Gold yet. I'm planning my install now. If you use the Elk to control the ISY, and it sounds like you do, then do you still do your programming in the ISY? Is the Elk module module needed if you use the Elk to control the ISY? Thanks!
apostolakisl Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 If you have the Elk module there is very little cause to write Elk rules. If you don't have the module, then you will need to use Elk rules any time an Elk event is the trigger. You can certainly use Elk to control things, but Elk rules are less capable than ISY, harder to edit, and harder to organize. I don't have any Elk rules controlling lighting at this time as I moved all of them to ISY when the module came out. I still have Elk rules where both the input side and output side are Elk. But if the Elk module had existed when I wrote those rules, I would probably have written in them in ISY.
sanders2222 Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 Here's my 2 cents. Do you use ISY to control the Elk or the Elk to control the ISY?Yes. The ISY is linked to the ELk with the M1XEP add on.I'm planning my install now. If you use the Elk to control the ISY, and it sounds like you do, then do you still do your programming in the ISY? Yes. I installed my M1-Gold in Feburary but still have some things to do (like hook my garage doors, entry gate and septic tank high water indicator). Some programs are triggered by an event the ELK monitors, and some programs control ELK actions. Is the Elk module module needed if you use the Elk to control the ISY?I do not see where this module is needed.
jmed999 Posted September 10, 2012 Author Posted September 10, 2012 Thanks! You may have saved me the $99. Anyone else?
