Thinking about getting a whole house surge protector
I like what I hear about layering.. Type 1 at the meter, Type 2 at the panel and Type 3 at all outlets.. still... I don't see good protection from direct strikes. Jon...

Thinking about getting a whole house surge protector
The overall effect of a direct lightning striking with all this energy ringing in the air seems hard to suppress.. edit in regards to electronics Jon...

I haven't heard any discussion on ground potential rise? Also, in the US two grounding rods are required (bonded of course.) Jon...

Thinking about getting a whole house surge protector
The resounding emphasis of this discussion is ground.. there just isn't enough of it in a 1/2" conductor.. Jon...

Thinking about getting a whole house surge protector
There is no electronic protection available for direct lightning strike. Lightning rods are installed to prevent fire and whole house surge can't react in time. The only defense to a direct strike is unplugging all devices from outlets during heavy storms. Jon...

Changing Garage IOLinc to normally closed?
If the switch is mounted to activate when the door is fully open then any state 2" away from the sensor the switch indicates closed; where as if mounted to activate with the door is closed the door actually won't be a full 2" open when it deactivates. I use a timer to close the garage door if left open longer than 3 minutes but can throw a switch that will cancel the timer (also putting something in the way of the sensing light works Jon...

Changing Garage IOLinc to normally closed?
The Amseco AMS-37 will have an "On" state with the garage door closed. Seco-Larm SM-226L-3Q has both NO and NC so no matter which convention is used to define it you can find one to suit your needs Jon

Thinking about getting a whole house surge protector
This statement could be misconstrued.. you leave enough holes to fill with whatever but I ask.. why does anything come into existence? Ultimately I find the answer to be.. a need. and as far as naturally occurring.. if you bring anything into existence how do you do it? don't you first have to think about it and construct it in your mind in some fashion or other? maybe bits at a time? Jon...

Question on Blinking Light Program
I've got the perfect solution for your boathouse... construct a cupola on top the boathouse to hold a fresnel beacon ... it'll make it look like a lighthouse That might be a little much but you can find all types of strobes or rotating beacons by googling, however.. warning flashers typically have a much faster rate than 4 seconds.. more like 100/min or so.. there's also low voltage (12-24v) but your choice will depend on how are you going to mount them? Jon...

Question on Blinking Light Program

Garage Door Opener
If you only want status from the IOLinc then disconnect the output to the opener and just use the sense portion.. If you leave it connected there isn't a way to disable it thru ISY... Jon..

Garage Door Opener
I have mine plugged into an On/Off Module and turn that off in the evening or when away. If it's only opening at night it's possible it's related to "query all." Jon...

Thinking about getting a whole house surge protector
Whole house surge suppression is widely recommended by professionals for protection of electronics (even by "this old house":) Years ago I installed a Leviton 51120-3R but really can't testify to it's effectiveness cause you just don't see it (unless it had remedied a preexisting condition.) It silently does it's thing without any feedback that you can witness. Google it and for reviews might provide more info.. Jon...

How to disable doorbell chime yet know it's pushed?
I think this is how I'd wire it... Seems what you need to do is complete the sense (input) circuit to ELK either using NO or NC side of IOLinc then route the output of ELK back to IOLinc sense. Jon...

Why does a program just stop in the middle of executing? Sometimes?
That seems to fly straight in the face of how Wiki defines it.. The 'Wait' command, when encountered during program execution, will cause the program's conditions to be reevaluated (see Statement Execution Order). A series of statements within a Then clause (or within an Else clause), up to the next Wait or Repeat statement, are atomic. In other words, all such statements are executed before the conditions of the program are retested. The program's conditions are reevaluated each time a Wait or Repeat statement is encountered, and at the end of each iteration of a Repeat loop. Probably just how I'm interpreting this Jon...

Why does a program just stop in the middle of executing? Sometimes?
So "Wait" causes a re-evaluation of the conditions before the wait period and not after.. this is why @ 5:34pm Else wasn't triggered? Jon...
