I have made that full Zwave choice, but I recognize the Insteon has pros. The Insteon vs Zwave debate is geting old in this forum and I have no intention to contribute to it. This being said, @giesen's " I have very little confidence " sounds exaggerated. My 80+ Zwave mesh network works very well, but he should stay with Insteon for as long as it makes him happy and for as long as it is available. All alternatives (including Insteon) have their pros and cons and most will reach their EOL or EOU (end of usefulness) at one point of time. Then move on, live with it, and enjoy.

While Nokia is European, from the cold Scandinavian woods, they for sure have US offices. The Insteon devices, widely "advertized" in these columns (!) are 110 V and therefore for the North American market. So the Silly people may not be all that silly .

Nodeservers are almost the best since sliced bread was invented..... These are integrations with multiple systems, curtains, thermostats, calendars, wifi devices...... etc etc. the nodeservers allow you to control these 3rd party systems from within ISY. -

Also yes and no. Currently I use both ISY and Polisy, with the latter running my Nodeservers, but yes the upcoming development is that you will no longer need ISY as ISY will run on Polisy. Eventually, ISY (as separate device) will reach EOL, but probably not any time soon. -

Yes and no....... I am still using the ISY with the 500 series Zwave board. As mentioned, it is all about need, urgency and timing. We already know that the future of ISY will be ISY-on-Polisy. Right now that mostly already works for Insteon but not yet for Zwave. UD is working on that, but we don't know how long this will take. My best guess is another few months. At that time, one should get a Series 7 Zwave dongle (Zooz is suggested), as 7 Series is now the current Zwave model. As such, if you can wait for a few months (with no guarantee of how long really), then don't get the 500 board. If you want Zwave on ISy faster, then go for the board. -
Adding extra ZWave controllers to expand range?
asbril replied to PatPend's topic in Z-Wave - Series 300/500
I don't know the distance of your set-up, but my home is just under 3000 sq ft, with the ISY on one of the far ends. I have an extensive Zwave mesh network ( around 80 Zwave devices) and I don't have connections issues. As upstatemike mentions, the number of hops is relevant but I would venture that more than 1 or 2 hops would work, especially if you many Zwave devices well spread around your location. -
The Nodeservers are a game changer. They allow you to interface with other systems (Tesla, Kasa, Lifx and many more). Personally, I make extensive use of Holidays Google which allows me to enter events in my Google Calendar which will then trigger Programs in ISY. I als use AVRemote which allows me to control my Google Chromecast and Google Home devices ( I cast different radio stations ate set times throughout my home). There is a lot you can do with Nodeservers and these can be found in the Nodeserver Store on the Polisy. It takes a bit of time to make these work, but if I can do it, then anyone can do it.

Yes my HA is on a RPi and it works perfectly.
-
HA has many integrations, though I only use very few. However I have Wifi devices that I use with Nodeservers (Kasa, Lifx). These work perfectly with ISY and then show up in HA through the ISY/HA Integration.

I guess that I am a computer freak. I have 3 computers in 3 different rooms, 2 Ipads, 1 Kindle Fire tablet and an Iphone. It may be my European accent, but Alexa/GH responses are far from perfect for me.
-
That is a matter of taste.... I have both Alexa and Google Home, with both connected to my ISY devices. Personally, to control my devices, I probably use Alexa / GH 10 % of the time, and 90% HA in my browser as well as HA & UD Mobile on my phone.
-
Excellent question...... (1) I installed HA before UD Mobile existed (2) I make extensive use of HA in my browser, which is my prefered method to control my ISY setup. HA is powerful and allows to make minimal use of the Administrative Console, which gives the occasional headache, not loading or stop working. Nowadays I make less use of HA on my Iphone and mostly use UD Mobile. My expectation is that eventually UD Mobile will work in my browser and will become pretty similar to HA, and then I may drop HA.
-
I use both Home Assistant and UD Mobile. The latter is constantly adding options and it is very user friendly and my guess is that it will eventually replace the Administrative Console (*)and be available in one's browser. Home Assistant is also very nice but, as mentioned, you need to install on a RPi (as I did) or elsewhere. Furthermore, to access Home Assistant outside of your own network, you will need to get a $5/mo subscription. (*) It may eventually replace the Administrative Console or the Administrative Console will have the same structure as UD Mobile. This is just my guess, but it seems logical.

Now you are opening a sensitive pandora box that had been silent in the recent weeks . Personally, I try to stay away as much as possible from the Insteon vs Zwave debate as it can provoke strong emotions. So if you want to go back to exclusive Insteon, good for you. However, your description seems to point to a defective device. I had suggested to you to change locations between one of the devices that were working fine with the one that you had issues with. Did you try that ? And if yes, what was the result ? Did it show an issue of location or an issue limited to the one device ? While I am, by far, not as techie as the others commenting, I do have around 80 Zwave devices, and therefore some experience with Zwave.

It shows that I have not been in southern California since 2001 (other than in transit at the airport)

This is indeed weird. First I would try Update Neighbors (which replaced Heal). Right click on the device, Zwave, Update Neighbors. If that does not work, then try to move one of the devices that do work and see if that one communicates with ISY from the location. If the second device does work at that location, then exclude it and re-include it. If that does not work either, then try factory reset. And if that does not work, then something is wrong with the device.

When Michel has the get-together in LA (when ISY on Polisy is complete with PG3), I hope you will come and teach me a few tricks

Hi Michel As I restarted both Nodeservers as well rebooted Polisy, the logs only show info thereafter. Next time it happens (thankfully not often), I will try remember to first download the logs.

I am not at my Administrative Console right now, but I believe that all you need to do is check "default" in the email settings.
