Venstar has provided a firmware update that provides an RESTful API to monitor and control the thermostat over an IP network. These thermostats are Wi-Fi enabled and have a large LCD screen. Probably the prettiest thermostat on the market right now. This includes 5800, 5900, 6800, and 6900 models.

 

The ISY team needs to gauge interest level from the community to determine and prioritize support for it in ISY.

REST is the only way to communicate since that's how Venstar developed the API.

 

Any user who owns the Network Resources module could arguably write their own, especially when v5.x comes out to allow two communication and enhanced variable support. However, the idea for this poll and thread is that the ISY team would provide native support or at least via a module to be added.

While the Venstars look great, I'm trying to centralize the control of my automation, not distribute overly smart devices that have so many bells and whistles of their own. The Venstars seem ideal for someone who wants a picture frame that runs their HVAC. I want my ISY to run my HVAC (and everything else for that matter)... :cry:

 

How is the use of a Venstar for $168 that can be controlled by ISY NOT centralizing the control of your automation? How is that different than spending $150 for the 2441TH that is controlled by the ISY? One uses IP over wired or wireless and there other uses a proprietary protocol over wired and wireless. You get more features with the Venstar (such as a customizable LCD and open, widely apopted protocol) for basically the same price. What exactly is the complaint about this scenario?

If the ISY team writes native support you don't need to buy the network module. If they write native support, you don't need to learn REST commands. That's the whole point of this poll is to gauge interest for the ISY team to do it so that you are not.

I would buy one in a second if it was a fully functional client but I really don't want to go back to the days of polling as was in the early Insteon Venstar days. They made a great effort but fell short in creating a great product. Perhaps future firmware releases will address this.

Agreed. Until there is a way to subscribe to the stat which notifies of changes when they occur eg temp change, set point change, etc hardly seems worth developing anything here.

That way you really can really gauge the need of anyone reading the thread.

The point of the poll is to gauge interest in the support for the Venstar thermostat based on the API they recently released. It's not a "This poll is to gauge interest in every possible thermostat consideration".

 

If you're not interested in Venstar's at all, then don't vote. I don't speak for UDI but I'm pretty sure if you don't vote at all the team will automatically assume that you're not interested in Venstar thermostats at all.

 

If you want find out who is happy with their current thermostat then start your own poll.

I guess I misunderstood the point of this poll.

 

To elaborate on my earlier comment about another option, if there were another option and there were a significant amount of votes NOT favoring the new thermostat, this would tell UDI that x amount of forum users HAVE read the poll and think UDI resources would be better allocated to other things, not every possible electronic device that comes along.

 

That's really all I was trying to say, I guess.

 

In reality, I hope you and the other 9 people that voted thus far get what you are looking for. It is a pretty cool looking device.

I wish that were true. The Insteon 2441TH and Venstar+2441V are the only two supported options I'm aware of unless you go ZigBee, which I have no interest in currently. There's potentially Z-wave options but I'm hesitant to begin using the Z-wave module on ISY for something tricky like a thermostat since Z-wave is still in beta. Maybe once 5.x is released I'll be more willing to give it a try.

 

Integration of HVAC in HA is important for me to get zone control within each HVAC system coupled with set point changes based on occupancy instead of a TOD schedule.
