Use of ${sys.extIP} variable in notifications

This would be valuable data piece to have.

Using remote access for the ISY994i from eg. Mobilinc etc., if i lost my last IP address I could have the notifications in ISY email or SMS me the new external IP address,

User to ISY heartbeat/checkbacks could be setup for auto-send (ISY reboot?) or just manually timed, say once per day, notifications sending the external IP address. This would be real useful in the event of vacation for an extended period and my ISP changes my IP address (power failure)  so that I lose contact with my ISY, IP cams, and other security type items in my network system. On the next SMS/email update  I would have my new IP address taht was assigned by my ISP.

This could eliminate some need for "cloud based" services.

syntax: (in any notification.)

   IP Address: ${sys.extIP}

Notification text::

   IP Address: 123.456.789.101:80

This would be useful to me certainly. Ironically, this (extended vacation) was the situation I faced a month ago when there was a power failure at the house.

After I got home, i finally broke down and set up a ddns service (mynetgear.com) but that has i troduced its own set of complications, however minor.

Why not just integrate a dyndns account settings into the config? Lots of routers do. Sign in with your credentials and boom.

You would need to explain that one to me. I have no idea how or why that could work.

How would I know what IP address my router is at?

Most modern routers have a feature where you can add your dyndns credentials and then your router reports the outside IP your provider gives you to their service and if your ip ever changes it updates their records.

Dynamic DNS services let's you use a curing donain name like larryllix.dyndns.org and that will point to your router. Never have to remember your up again.

Go look at dyndns.org

Still a cloud service but at least my router company provides a free one, so far.

Well yes it's cloud. But then so is the internet. It allows you to have a domain name (that doesn't change) and then no matter what the ip of your connection to the ISP, you never have to care. Just use the name u pick to access your home. It's brilliant!

Dynamic DNS companies are pretty cheap and they update the address right away when it changes.  I use no-ip.com for $20/year I think and I get a bunch of URL's (like 20 I think) so I let my parents, brother, inlaws ext all hop on my account.  They also have a free version but the logging in every month is a PITA that I am willing to pay $20/year to avoid.

Most routers have at least one built-in service.  The foscam/Insteon ip cameras also have several built-in services (no-ip included), as well as the Elk xep unit.  While I don't need it, it seems like ISY would be a worthwhile place to put that service as well.

But the cloud part is minimal in this case. I believe some get all your passwords and data funnelled through their service and have complete access to your junk. :) . It seems more like they "own you".

I have seen too much of this stuff in the past. I had to abandon my ISP email address years back due to over 150 spams per day. Luckily that seems to be under better control now but then I don't file all my dirty laundry online to come back and haunt me either, like some do.

I completely agree 100%

If you own an ISY to automate your life why not have it perform this simple task ?

It just does not make sense too spend more money for a DDNS SERVICE to do something if you already bought a device that could that could serve your purpose with a simple upgrade.

There maybe other alternatives in the mean time.

Let's all at least support the idea !

ISY has many features I may not use now, but I would not want them removed or have never been developed because I don't need them today.... There is always tomorrow.

LET'S DO IT

Yes, there would NO dependence on "the cloud" services, just the Internet and your LAN working.

Nobody watches  your username, passwords, or  your sensitive data  go by through their Internet connection except the backbone providers, your ISP, the node ISP the you are accessing from, and the FBI . That's enough.

Any data using the internet is subject to surveillance, cloud or not. BTW, the "cloud" is nothing more than internet accessible hard drives. So is your computer if it's connected to a router which is also wired to the internet.

Hello all,

I am not sure I understand why you cannot use a dynamic DNS service. Most routers come with their own free ddns. I use dlink and it's been working flawlessly.

With kind regards ,

Michel

Yes mine was free also ... Then they wanted to charge a yearly fee.

Granted is was only $25 / yr , which may not seem like much to some, but to others that maybe another module they can buy.

A static IP was almost $500 /year additional from my ISP

Bottom line .. There are less an less free ones , things start out cheap and for some odd reason, the price always goes up ?? Hmmm

Currently when away from home I send an email to myself look at the header and find my current IP address ....

Gee the ISY will send me the email why not include capability to perform the task posted here by larryllix.

Michel would it be difficult to add this as an option ?

I completely understand that everything has a priority , takes memory and requires man hours, of which you probably don't have enough of already. Please consider it.

Hope that helps,

Don

Hi Don,

Let me do proper sizing again. The last time we sized we ended up having to use a dedicated service from whatsmyip.com without which it would be very difficult getting the accurate IP address especially for routers that don't support UPNP and/or when ISY is behind a firewall.

And to your point we will have to check how much we'll be charged fit this service.

With kind regards,

Michel

Hi Michel,

I was unaware you would have to pay another provider for that service.

If it means an additional cost to UDI, "In my opinion"   don't mess with it.

I thought it may have been some simple program routine to pull the Senders IP.

It is really very easy on the users (my) end to get their own IP.

Any additional cost should be borne by the individual (me) and not the entire organization.

Thanks for your response.

Does this mean every time I click on "About" in the ISY, it costs somebody money to access a service?

I don't understand why the cost of making the data, currently available inside ISY, would cost more money to make available as a system variable, if that is what is being conveyed.

Does Help | About display the LAN address or WAN address?

Mine shows the local LAN address.

whatsmyip displays the WAN address.

Is everyone asking to put the local LAN address in a variable or the external WAN address.  I did not think the ISY currently knows the external WAN address.

People seem to be asking for the WAN address (which does not make sense to me since ISY does not know what that is!). The given example of email headers only has the IP because it was added by the external relay server (which sees the WAN IP on the connection). The ISY never learns what this is.

If your Internet access is turned on ISY knows exactly what your WAN IP address is. That is where dozens of Port Forwarders have been instructed to look for it.
