df78 Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 Will the ISY be updated to support HomeKit? I'm trying to decide if I want to stick with my ISY or sale it off and get the new Insteon hub. What I love about the ISY is the advanced programming abilities... But at the same time I'm getting really fed up with the Java user interface. Java is outdated and insecure... It seems like every time I want to login to my ISY I have to update Java and jump through tons of hoops. I also really want use of HomeKit. How about Nest! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Michel Kohanim Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 Hi df78, Unfortunately no plans at all for HomeKit and we are forbidden to do anything with NEST (based on their development docs) since we also do Energy Management/Demand Response. So, I guess it's time to move on to the HUB. Sorry. With kind regards, Michel
lilyoyo1 Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 It amazes me how many people want a product without knowing anything about it just because it has Apples name on it. WIth the information I have seen on homekit, I am glad UDI is staying out of that. I love the ISY the way it is and it's future capabilities.

WIth the information I have seen on homekit, I am glad UDI is staying out of that. I love the ISY the way it is and it's future capabilities. It amazes me how people assume that no one but them knows anything. I know exactly what HomeKit is. And I love the functionality of the isy... However it might be a bit of an overkill for me... Plus I would really like to be able to use Siri to controls devices in my home. Plus... As I stated... I'm sick of dealing with Java. What about the people who automatically hate everything with an apple logo on it? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
smokegrub Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 (edited) We have used the Mac since 1986. Today, wife and I have 2 iPhones, an iPad, and iMac and a MacBook Pro. We are, however, not in lockstep with Apple. We use the technology that best suits our needs. For example, we are not interested in a watch that requires us to carry a phone in our pockets! Nor, are we interested in having the most recent device simply for the sake of having it. We migrated from the HUB to the ISY and have not looked back. In fact, we have 2 ISYs, each at different locations. They are rock solid, powerful devices that, coupled with MobiLinc on our iPhones, allow us amazing control over our homes. If the HUB or HomeKit best fits your needs, then that is what you should own. However, I would recommend keeping the ISY until you are certain you have made the best choice. paulbates Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 Its not about hating anything with an apple Logo on it. Its about living in a universe that doesn't tacitly revolve around the apple logo, and the opportunity cost of trading away everything else away for it. There are a number of established ways to control the ISY from ios (including voice control) and mac os that are not homekit. I didn't see in the posts if that was tried, or not. The ISY offers some great integration capabilities and power. UDI has been developing and deepening these capabilities over a number of years. . Homekit does not cancel all of that vision and accomplishment out. We each have to decide what is worth it, or what is not. Just to be clear, passive aggressive statements about needing to sell of the ISY because it doesn't support homekit are neither impressing or motivating anyone. Stay, go. Its up to you. I am surprised the iPad doesn't have big wings coming out it's backside but then that could limit sales to Christian countries. ha-ha. The knowledgebase link on the SH page is a dead link. Good one! Teken Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 I know the bulk of the limitations are imposed by Apple. But seriously, if there was ever an example of sticking it to the consumer here is one: How do I set up my HomeKit for access when I am not at not at home? Remote access is a great way to stay connected with your HomeKit enabled home. HomeKit requires that you have Apple TV (3rd generation or higher) to be able to access your HomeKit away from your home. So for those who believe they are going to get ultimate control of their home below the price of a ISY Series Controller. Being forced to have a Apple TV will cost you another $69.XX - 99.XX depending upon market or region for WAN access. Now I already own a Apple TV so no big deal for me. What about the poor schmuck who doesn't read or know the fine print? Now this part confuses the hell out of me given the whole point of this Apple Home Kit was to unify everyone under one umbrella?? I am sure there are more details about this either not known or not published but come on! I don't know where the failing is whether its on the part of Apple or Smartlabs. Can I use other manufacturers HomeKit products with Insteon+? While the Insteon+ app is capable of controlling other manufacturers HomeKit-enabled products, we cannot guarantee compatibility due to various device types. At the moment the only other HomeKit-enabled device is the Lutron Smart Bridge with HomeKit Technology. Insteon+ can recognize this device as well as their in wall dimmer and plug-in dimmer. You must first enable Siri control from within the Lutron app. What does this mean in English??? If the Hub Pro goes offline, can I still use Siri to send out commands? If the Hub Pro goes offline, you will still be able to state commands, however the Hub Pro will not be able to process them.
mwester Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 "If the Hub Pro goes offline, can I still use Siri to send out commands? If the Hub Pro goes offline, you will still be able to state commands, however the Hub Pro will not be able to process them." I laughed out loud when I read that gem. What a great way to say "No!" without actually saying "No". That sort of marketing drivel makes a used car salesman look like a paragon of virtue by comparison. On a serious note, I just cannot, having worked in the technology world all my career, entrust my home automation to an internet connection and some company's server, no matter what marking deodorant they spray over that (can anyone say "cloud"??). Siri, Echo, Hub, they're all the same -- a malfunction/leak/hack/latency/frustration just waiting to happen.
larryllix Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 I believe I have stated this before but... HomeKit should accelerate the use of ISY HA as users sadly invest lots of bucks in hardware only to find problems and want independence from the cloud. Meanwhile they will have purchased a few Insteon devices and the swing over to ISY should be a natural progression. Why did SH never create a controller with advanced logic copying the same no HA path as X10 went? Was it to leave room for third party developers, like UDI, and Apple, to "partner" with their technology? Originally I purchased two Hubs for my son and myself. After 20 minutes of playing I realised from my old X10 experience that I would be bored with the Hub within two days. Adding cloud advanced logic, actually making the system HA would drive me bonkers. I don't like the delays in ISY making a decision about my lights after seeing motion. Imagine the cloud making that decision in the middle of the night? The light might be on after you pee and are heading back to bed. I am not going to wear a watch to bed and my mobile phone is never close by when I sleep. My guess is somebody pushed Apple's buttons promising HA glory. "Welcome to out home! Here are your slippers and wristwatch so my home can spy on you." Geesh I find my bedroom lamps disconnected everytime my guests leave already. Not everybody likes HA. Not even my kids that have Internet addictions.
barrygordon Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 I have been completely controlling my ISY994i (with both networking and Z-Wave modules installed) from iPads and my iPhone. The iPads are wall mounted (one in each room) and act as the UI to the ISY. Same with the iPhone (5s). The "App" is running under the CommandFusion iViewer. On the iPhone as soon as I touch the app button to make it active it immediately re-syncs with the ISY and is completely up to date in about 1 second. Control of the insteon devices is just about instantaneous. I am very interested in voice control via Siri. If Apple opens up a better interface from Siri to running apps under IOS, then perhaps CommandFusion will deal with Siri as a command source. I would like to see some sort of a bridge capability between Homekit and the ISY994. A box sitting on the LAN that can bridge commands from the IOS/Siri devices to the ISY would be very nice, but I am not holding my breath.
