Replacing a dead ISy-994izw

Hey guys,

 

My ISY went belly up.  I have over 200 devices, dozens of programs, geofencing setup, insteon and z-wave devices.  I DO thankfully have a backup.  Can anyone point me to documentation on how to replace the ISY with a brand new one?  I couldn't find anything in the wiki.

I don't think we  I have ever heard of an ISY going belly up before. (turn it over again? )

Long story short it is my own fault.  My niece tipped over a drink in my office where I keep the ISY on a shelf.  No fault of the ISY itself.  No I haven't contacted them.  I was hoping not to bother them with our own idiocy.  Guess I will.

My ISY is in an out-of-the-way location for just that reason. A also have my keyboard on a sliding drawer for exactly the same reason. BTW, was any of the drink saved?

To answer your specific question (it seems that's a hard thing for some of us to do! ), not sure if there is any documentation -- it's really very easy.

 

In a nutshell:

 

a) acquire a new ISY - same make, model*

b ) request via UDI's support team to move all your software modules from the old dead one to the new one - they're really good about that.

c) plug in your network and PLM

d) connect, install the same version firmware as the old one

e) restore backup

f) enjoy.

 

*You can save some moola, IF the zwave module is still functional -- you can try to move that to the new ISY.  In fact, since that module has the association with your existing zwave devices, I'd try that first.

A wash in some weak cleaner (Varsol is the old standby but rubbing alcohol may do it), let dry thoroughly without any power, and possibly replace the SD memory card after testing, would usually work depending on how the powered up state affected the wet connections. I would definitely try it but I live in electronics repair for 50 years.

 

I've been known to scrub boards with contact cleaner and an old toothbrush, blow off with compressed air, let dry and power back up many times. LOL  but that was mainly for electrical grid, sensitive CPU protection equipment that kept hundreds of $million$ worth of transmission lines safe and  lights on.,. not important stuff.

 

 

EDIT: I forgot to mention to keep any difference of voltage (statics) away from the PCB. This means you don't wear synthetic or wool shirts, you hold the board continuously with one hand while washing it with the other. Then you touch the surface with your body (hand) you will set it in down on to dry, before the board touches the same. Grab by the edge of the board, not the chips.

Having to replace the ISY would seem to be one time that having the PLM as a separate module is a good thing.  All of the Insteon device associations are with the PLM and not the ISY.

Fair point.  Counterpoint: if the PLM was fully integrated into the ISY, then one could easily imagine that the PLM's Insteon ID would be derived from or part of the ISY's UUID -- all it would take is adding a means to set or change the Insteon ID in the PLM.

 

That said, z-wave has the same problem/feature -- the association, and the unique z-wave id (MAC), is all on the z-wave board.  So replacing the z-wave board requires excluding and re-adding every z-wave device.  It's actually a little bit worse: that's followed by the need to audit and update all programs to account for the new z-wave names, since there's no guarantee your devices will all end up with the same suffix in the name when you re-add them.
