Moshe Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 This past weekend it seems my PLM has gone south. I was receiving an error on 2 devices in the admin console. Querying the devices did not rectify the issue. Is there anything I can try short of replacing the PLM? Currently all of my programs and devices are spotty. Thanks Moshe
jrainey Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 Check out the topic "Strange problem - looking for ideas". This was PLM failure that progressed over many weeks. My suggestion would be to try a factory reset on the PLM, and go through the PM replacement procedure. I was finally convinced that my PLM had failed when it would not reset. Jack
Moshe Posted February 20, 2018 Author Posted February 20, 2018 Jack - Thanks for the response. I am certain now my PLM has malfunctioned. I am getting a zero count plus safe mode. Moshe
stusviews Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 Those are two strong indications of a failed PLM. Be sure to follow the instructions word for word when replacing the PLM. Fortunately, if you make an error, you can start anew. https://wiki.universal-devices.com/index.php?title=ISY-99i/ISY-26_INSTEON:File_Menu#Restore_Modem_.28PLM.29
Brian H Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 If it is over two years and a few months old. That would be another factor in determining it has failed. Along with the LED on the side sometimes being dim or RED.
Moshe Posted February 20, 2018 Author Posted February 20, 2018 I am pretty certain it is way over 2 years old. Moshe
Brian H Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 It probably is the PLM. If you care to read a real long thread on the PLM issues and how some of us repaired theirs. https://forum.universal-devices.com/topic/13866-repair-of-2413s-plm-when-the-power-supply-fails/
Moshe Posted February 23, 2018 Author Posted February 23, 2018 I have replaced the PLM and all is good. The only issue I have is that with one device I am unable to write the updates. I have tried restoring the device but still no luck. The device is an on/off outlet. Any ideas? Moshe
Michel Kohanim Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 Hi Moshe, Either the devices is defective or signal/noise. Please factory reset that switch | Restore device. With kind regards, Michel
Moshe Posted February 23, 2018 Author Posted February 23, 2018 Hi Michel - I tried restore - it did not work. Moshe
dsstrainer Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 I think mine is going bad... but really weird situation Started on sunday... I use door open/close sensors to detect if my garage is open. if open for 15 mins, I have a program set to trigger my iolinc to close the garage door. That day I noticed it going up and down over and over as if it wasn't getting the "closed" signal.. so it just kept toggling. I unplugged the PLM for 10 secs.. and plugged it back in but it didnt help. Then I did an upgrade from 4.5 something to 4.6.2. My outside light programs were still working sunday night so I figured all was well. Monday I saw my side lights and patio lights turned off, but the front door light program didn't. I went to work and had the garage open for more than 15 min and it triggered the close script. I double checked on Agave and it showed Closed for the door sensor. But then my neighbor calls me saying the door is open. I login to the admin jnlp and none of my devices are able to be queried. says it could not communicate with any of them. But... 1. My light timers are still working every night this week. 2. When I do a Tools->Diagnostics->PLM Info it shows Connected 3. When I do a Tools->Diagnostics->Show PLM Links table it goes out and is able to grab 86 of them and the addresses seem fine at first glance 4. Made changes to programs and everything seems to process fine. I see flickering lights on the PLM when I send commands 5. I did a reset of the PLM (plug in while holding set for 10 secs) and then restored modem. That actually gave me "some" of the devices back.. I can now query my front and back lights.. but not the side lights. All insteon dimmer 2477d switches. IOLincs are still not talking. Tried putting the door sensors in linking mode but it still not finding them. So I bought a new 2312S and we'll see how that goes.. but it seems like the PLM is working in general. So maybe something else. Also noticed that neither of my Access points are doing anything when I plug them in. No lights or anything. Held the set button down for some time and nothing happens. Tried hitting it 4 times really fast to enable phase switching mode.. still nothing. So think maybe they are both dead and possibly one has been dead for a while and the second one just died and maybe that is why I can't talk to anything. So I bought 2 more on ebay. Think I will buy a few more anyway. Anyway.... things are a mess right now
Brian H Posted February 24, 2018 Posted February 24, 2018 If the 2443 Access Points are hardware 2.0 or higher. They are built on the same base 2413 PLM board. The hardware 1.? are on the older boards used in the 2412. They can have the same power supply issues as a greater than two year old 2413S. I had two go bad myself. I believe the LEDs where out out real dim and failed the built in communications tests. I rebuilt them with the same parts used in the long PLM repair thread. Both are now functioning again.

When I do a Tools->Diagnostics->Show PLM Links table it goes out and is able to grab 86 of them and the addresses seem fine at first glance If you have more than 5 or 6 devices and a couple of KPLs, then 86 PLM links is actually a very low count
Moshe Posted February 25, 2018 Author Posted February 25, 2018 I often wonder if the access points are really needed any longer. It would seem that the mesh network and powerline communication are sufficent for getting communications to all devices.
paulbates Posted February 25, 2018 Posted February 25, 2018 You can certainly unplug them and see. I still get use out of one in my garage to extend to 2 iolincs I have out there. It works ok without it, it works perfect with it based on level three diagnostics. Paul
Brian H Posted February 25, 2018 Posted February 25, 2018 It may depend on your setup and modules. Many of mine are power line only modules. With a few Dual Band one in the mix. I still use them as the later ones dropped X10 and I still control them with an X10 HR12A Palm Pad remote. For me a good working set of Access Points is needed. For the Insteon controls and a JV Digital Engineering XTB-IIR for X10. As it respects Insteon and does not try and scramble the Insteon commands.
dsstrainer Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 (edited) Ok I got a new PLM... but I think it was some Frankenstein module sold on ebay. The sticker says "2412U" but it has an serial jack on it. And it does power the ISY when plugged in. So I think it was some refurb and they swapped the USB port out. But... 1. ISY goes into safe mode when I connect it and restore plm fails with cannot reset the plm 2. I tried factory reset which is supposed to turn the LED off after holding for 10sec and release. But on this one the LED flashes for about 4 mins 3. No matter what I do, ISY cannot communicate with it so I think its a dud. Meanwhile, I went back to my old PLM and did a factory reset on it. Restored the Modem and in the event viewer, some things look better than before. I added 2 new working access points to my house as well. But I think the problem is actually the hops. Looking at the event viewer log, most of my devices are showing hops left :0 What's odd about that is my PLM is on my main floor, literally 10-15 feet from 2 IOlincs (1 communicates, 1 doesn't), 3 switch lincs (1 communicates, 2 don't) an On/Off module, 2 Keypadlincs, and a dual band Lamp module (only 1 month old) which also acts as an access point/mesh repeater. Everything is on that floor and well within range of both Mesh and powerline. I also have some X10 motion sensors going through a TM 751 which has been working fine. So I don't know why I'm running out of hops Event Log for restore of PLM looks good: Quote 02/27/2018 12:57:11 AM : [D2D EVENT ] Event [36 75 C6 3] [ST] [0] uom=0 prec=-1 Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:11 AM : [ 36 75 C6 3] ST 0 Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:16 AM : [ Time] 00:57:16 0(0) Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:16 AM : [ Time] 00:57:16 0(0) Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 16 87 74 1] Restoring PLM Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 13 85 E6 1] Replacing PLM links (locally and in PLM) Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 13 85 E6 1] Replacing PLM links Successful Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 13 86 AF 1] Replacing PLM links (locally and in PLM) Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 13 86 AF 1] Replacing PLM links Successful Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 17 D4 23 1] Replacing PLM links (locally and in PLM) Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 17 D4 23 1] Replacing PLM links Successful Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 20 BD 44 1] Replacing PLM links (locally and in PLM) Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 20 BD 44 1] Replacing PLM links Successful Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 21 65 57 1] Replacing PLM links (locally and in PLM) Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 21 65 57 1] Replacing PLM links Successful Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 27 AF 68 1] Replacing PLM links (locally and in PLM) Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 27 AF 68 1] Replacing PLM links Successful Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 29 BF 4B 1] Replacing PLM links (locally and in PLM) Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 29 BF 4B 1] Replacing PLM links Successful Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 29 DC 18 1] Replacing PLM links (locally and in PLM) Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 29 DC 18 1] Replacing PLM links Successful Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 29 E9 48 1] Replacing PLM links (locally and in PLM) Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 29 E9 48 1] Replacing PLM links Successful Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 2C F5 7C 1] Replacing PLM links (locally and in PLM) Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 2C F5 7C 1] Replacing PLM links Successful Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 31 6B FC 1] Replacing PLM links (locally and in PLM) Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 31 6B FC 1] Replacing PLM links Successful Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 31 E5 8B 1] Replacing PLM links (locally and in PLM) Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 31 E5 8B 1] Replacing PLM links Successful Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 32 2A 6B 1] Replacing PLM links (locally and in PLM) Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 32 2A 6B 1] Replacing PLM links Successful Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 36 75 C6 1] Replacing PLM links (locally and in PLM) Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 36 75 C6 1] Replacing PLM links Successful Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 36 CD 69 1] Replacing PLM links (locally and in PLM) Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 36 CD 69 1] Replacing PLM links Successful Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 36 FF 21 1] Replacing PLM links (locally and in PLM) Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 36 FF 21 1] Replacing PLM links Successful Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 36 FF 7E 1] Replacing PLM links (locally and in PLM) Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 36 FF 7E 1] Replacing PLM links Successful Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 49 21 C1 1] Replacing PLM links (locally and in PLM) Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 49 21 C1 1] Replacing PLM links Successful Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 49 22 75 1] Replacing PLM links (locally and in PLM) Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : [ 49 22 75 1] Replacing PLM links Successful Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:40 AM : Reset PLM Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:44 AM : [RST-ACK ] 02 67 06 Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:44 AM : [SET-CNF-RSP ] 02 6B 80 06 Tue 02/27/2018 12:57:44 AM : [All ] Writing 212 bytes to devices Event log with hops left at 0 for the failed modules that ran out of hops: Quote On/Off module (1 yr old) Tue 02/27/2018 01:01:33 AM : [Std-Direct Nack] 2C.F5.7C-->ISY/PLM Group=0, Max Hops=3, Hops Left=0 Tue 02/27/2018 01:01:38 AM : [INST-TX-I2CS] 02 62 2C F5 7C 1F 2F 00 00 02 0F C7 08 E2 01 00 00 00 01 00 01 0C Tue 02/27/2018 01:01:38 AM : [INST-ACK ] 02 62 2C.F5.7C 1F 2F 00 00 02 0F C7 08 E2 01 00 00 00 01 00 01 0C 06 (00) Tue 02/27/2018 01:01:38 AM : [INST-SRX ] 02 50 2C.F5.7C 16.87.74 A3 2F FF (FF) Tue 02/27/2018 01:01:38 AM : [Std-Direct Nack] 2C.F5.7C-->ISY/PLM Group=0, Max Hops=3, Hops Left=0 Tue 02/27/2018 01:01:38 AM : [2C F5 7C 1 ] Link 7 : 0FC0 [E201000000010001] *Failed Writing [....000000......] IOLinc (older). Even when the ISY admin panel can't talk to it, the timers I have set for things like the iolincs both function correctly. All 3 switchlincs turn on every night automatically. And at times I am able to interact with the devices through Agave... other times they time out. Seems like maybe some spurious noise interfering or something, but nothing changed that I can think of. Maybe I'll buy a filterlinc module and see if that helps. Edited February 27, 2018 by dsstrainer

Brian H Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 One other thing I thought of. If they put a serial board from a 2413S in it. At least it would have had the link database size of a 2413S and the faster memory. Though I don't know if a 2412 would take advantage of the faster memory.

Well it just doesn't work at all.. so it's no faster
Sub-Routine Posted March 1, 2018 Posted March 1, 2018 IIRC, the U had a cat5 type port and the cable supplied was a USB to cat5.

Sub-Routine Posted March 1, 2018 Posted March 1, 2018 See what happens when you get old? It's been over 10 years since I used the U so... It's probably in the box with my prototype ISY-26.
Brian H Posted March 1, 2018 Posted March 1, 2018 Rand; Time does seem to fly by. I have an early production 2412S where they used the serial board from the 2414S. Unused Real Time Clock chip, battery and larger ram use to store downloaded SALAD programs.
