Control Garage Door Relay with Keypad

Recommended Posts

Hi -

I feel like this is simple, but can't get it. I have a 8 button KPL. The "G" button is set to toggle. I create a scene with the garage door relay as responder and the "G" button as controller and expect the door to go up. But no.

The "G" button behaves as expected in that it blinks twice when pushed. The Garage door relay works when triggered with "ON" button from ISY under the device, but can't seem to get the button to control the door.

Garage Door device shows as: 2450 IO Link (Refurbished) - although I don't think I bought it as refurbished? But I don't care unless that is part of my problem.

Any ideas or links to tutorials?

I kept fooling around wit hit and apparently the solution is to change the relay to "Momentary B". Can anyone tell me why "Momentary A" didn't work?

Yes

Start on page 8 of the iolinc manual.

  • Momentary A sends a message to trigger the iolinc for either the keypad on or the keypad off.
  • Momentary B sends a message to trigger the iolinc for the keypad on and the keypad off. Momentary B triggers the iolinc if the keypad sends and on and if it sends an off

You want the iolinc to "click" like the actual garage remote to operate the door in either case, regardless of what the keypad key state is

If you have a sensor on your door for the iolinc, you can set up a scene to have the key light up as on if someone uses a car remote or the wall unit in the garage

Thank you. I appreciate the suggestion for the sensor, that is in the plan.

For the trigger, I am still confused.  Initially I wasn't sure if I wanted Momentary A or B. I tried A first and expected even if wrong choice it would still trigger the door relay every other time I pressed it (one press being ON and one being OFF), but I got no response at all with Momentary A.

Problem solved, but I appreciate any insight.

Thank you.

The iolinc is a general purpose device with several modes of operation to support different applications. I have 3 iolincs and they all do very different things, one of them being to support the garage door via Momentary B

If you are using a single kepad key, you want the door to operate whether you press the keypad key on, or if you press it off. Momentary B does just that. Momentary A is designed to do exactly what you saw when you had that set, it will only respond to the on. Some applications need that, but not a garage door using a single keypad key.

Some applications may want the contacts to close temporarily when you press the on... but not if you press the off. The iolinc does this via the A and B options (and there is a C as well). Option A is not designed for a single keypad key garage door application.

I use momentary A for my garage door, along with a non-toggle mode (ON) for my single keypad button.  Works great.

I am a little puzzled also why your door did not respond every other time when you had it in the same mode.

I think i am missing something here, i have the momentary switch set to B and have created a scene to control the IO link through my keypad which it does. The problem i am having is that I only want the keypad light to illuminate when the door is open (sensors made), as I can control the garage door using the simple switch (that came with the door) I need this back light to be independent of the button press on the keypad. I have tried making the switch both a controller and and a responder without any luck.

I hope this makes sense, any help is appreciated.

Make a scene and include the button you wish as responder.  This scene can then be controlled by a program that turns it on or off and that is only purpose of this scene to control button LED. Program would be: If garage door open the turn scene on else turn off. I’m typing this in my phone now so cannot post much detail of exact program but if you can’t figure it out I can later.

If all you want is a keypad showing garage door status, create a scene with sensor as controller and button as responder.

Of course, this assumes sensor is ON whan the door is open.  You will have to confirm this at your house.
