UDI Mobile App not working right since last app update

I'm experiencing an odd situation where both my Android devices (Samsung Note 8 and Samsung S7) are both reporting "Out" all of the time.  This behaviour began right after updating the app to the latest version from Google Play on the 14th of August.  Manually reporting device status will update correctly, but a few minutes later the status again reverts to "out".  I've tried uninstalling and re-installing the app, removing and re-adding both devices to the portal and verifying app permissions are all set correctly, with no luck.  Has anyone else experienced this?

@glarsen,

Cannot reproduce. This is the report from Brad:

The user should ensure that their operating system is updated, and that the proper location privileges are set. I would reboot the Android device as well just to ensure that is not the cause. (rebooting in airplane mode is best)

Sometimes having 2 devices close to each other can influence GPS location accuracy in unpredictable ways.  (rare but happens)

Possible cause:

The geofence is not set to where the user thinks it is.

Fix:

Ensure the location of the geofence is where you expect it to be. If you are inside the geofence use the red location button in the geofence edit page to locate you, update, and save.

Note:

Refer to images above that indicate status of geofence. Red pin is geofence “false” or “out”, and blue pin is geofence “true” or “in” (see attached images)

If the status in ISY says false and the pin is red in the app, this is expected and the issue is that the device does not see itself as being inside the geofence.

Possible cause:

If the user’s device has GPS that is less accurate than the minimum distance to report, it may report inaccurately.

If the interval is set to say 60 minutes the user will not see a change until 60 minutes have elapsed.

Fix:

These settings should be set to something reasonable like 5 or 10 meters, and 1 or 5 minutes. (see attached image)

Lastly the user should make sure that the mobile devices are assigned to the geofence that they intend to trigger, and I believe that if you have 2 mobile devices under the “Home” geofence in ISY that it will be “True” if either mobile device is “True” but I haven’t tested multiple devices under a geofence with latest versions.

With kind regards,

Michel

Sorry Michel, that doesn't help any. It doesn't explain why both worked just fine with the current settings until the latest UDI Mobile update was installed in the last couple of days. The phones are both at the latest version of firmware, one is my wife's and the other mine so they are rarely close enough to one another to be an issue, especially during the work day.  Both have been re-booted, the app uninstalled and re-installed, permissions opened completely up and geo-fences removed and re-added.  They both have the app set to "unmonitored" in the power saving settings so that they continue running in the background. They are both set to 10m and 1 minute inside a 250 m diameter fence.  I've even tried changing the diameter to 400m and both still behave the same.  The pin turns blue when i manually "Report Device Status", and then a minute later turns red again.  The ISY status follows with in/true and out/false as expected.

Both phones have also been deleted from and re-added to the portal so I'm at a loss.  It kind of removes half the value of having the portal for me.  It's disappointing because for months it all worked perfectly, and now suddenly, nothing.

Hi @glarsen

Thank you. What are your phones' make/models? Also, is it possible that after the update the settings may have been lost?

With kind regards,
Michel

I'm not sure what you mean about settings.  I've re-verified all of the permissions settings after the re-install of the app, as well as the power-saver settings.  And of course, re-established the geo-fence location and size using the GPS locator pin (which does show in the correct location) after the re-installation this morning.

Hi glarsen,

Specifically,

The user should also make sure he is setup in the portal as an “Editor” and not a “User” in the Portal to toggle some settings this is required.

With kind regards,
Michel

Sorry, definitely set up as "Editor".

Fernando, as soon as both devices, S7 and Note8, were updated, they reported "In" the geofence.  I'll check the background reporting when we go out a little later to ensure all is working properly, but this is a good sign.

Thanks again for the help!

Need to set up geofence for 4 phones and wanted a simple solution versus needing to manage tasker on 4 phones, so gave UDI Mobile a try. Initial results looked promising, but background notification is unreliable. I see notifications on  the bottom of my phone that no network is available, which is not true, I'm either on WiFi or mobile data all the time. If I open the UDI mobile app and manually report device status it will update correctly, but all 4 phones do not background update reliably.

Settings (I'm editor) Distance 1, Time 10, Geofence 300 meters

Phones 2 Moto X4 and 1 Original Pixel all running Pie, 1 Nexus 5X running Oreo.

@OneClicktoControl ideas?

Thanks,

Mike

@Michel Kohanim  Can you check with @OneClicktoControl to see what I may be doing wrong. I was hoping to avoid managing tasker on wife and kids phones and this seemed like a great solution, but it's just not working unless the app is opened and and a manual report location issued.

Thanks,

Mike

I'm experiencing the same thing on my Samsung Note 8. It may update on itself after hours of leaving a location.
