Maybe PolISY needs a REST interface so the other odd hundred HA controller systems can use it to interface with their worlds too. Why should ISY be the only HA so entitled?

I'm basically working on re-writing most of the plugins I've written for HomeSeer.  The eventuality of a "market place" or some method (donations?) of getting paid for nodeserver's however would be very nice considering I don't make money from installs but from doing the software development/integration/programming of systems.

The ISY does already and I'm certain that will be carried over.  ISY is already integration with HomeSeer via a plugin (I use it too).  I've been asked to develop and integration with the Hubitat system to ISY as well.  However that is a more tightly constrained development environment so it will take a bit longer to develop.  There's also already the Home Assistant component which is also very good

Why would smart HA systems need ISY, another smart HA controller? They could just buy the PolISY with all the NSs inside and interface it with their own smart HA controller.

I view these other HA systems interfacing with ISY as a waste of development time. If they just wanted the Insteon interface, why not just interface to the dumber/cheaper Hub or an just an Insteon PLM? Maybe ISY was too easy to interface to, but then why not just use the ISY and forget the other HA controller? I don't understand the process for that thinking.

Some of the larger systems do have a direct Insteon interface.  Mark did a great job on the Insteon plugin for HomeSeer.  However it's very common for other HA systems to actually use the ISY as a device controller for Insteon.  Allonis MyServer, Charmed Quark (CQC) are among the other big HA players and they use the ISY as the device controller.  I suspect their rational is because of the stability and quality of the ISY as an Insteon controller versus them doing the Insteon integration work directly.

A lot of systems don't use the Insteon Hub as an integration point due to lack of developer access to the Hub.  It took me a lot of effort, e-mails and phone calls and by LUCK I got in contact with someone inside Insteon who was able to get me setup with the developer access necessary to develop for the Insteon Hub.  I think this difficulty of getting documentation and the API keys needed is a reason why ISY is the preferred integration point for Insteon today.

ISY is a great device controller and Polyglot is making things much better bringing "apps".  However it is still lacking in the areas of the Admin Console being fairly dated and not having support for string data types for values makes it very difficult to provide any kind of multi-media type data... think music metadata, now playing, movies, any kind of dynamic value data, even geofence names as an example are not easy to do today with the ISY and requires a bit of "hacking" of re-writing the node profile to update the "string".  There are things I do today with plugins in HomeSeer that are simply not possible yet with the ISY.

I see the Pro is outselling the regular version and I am curious what the logic is that is driving folks that way? I don't see using Wi-Fi for this (or any server type appliance) so not finding any value in that. Likewise even if I could think of a use for having Bluetooth I don't see putting a server appliance in a location where direct Bluetooth connectivity is any way practical (basement server rack for example). So before i commit and place my order I need to understand what is the big driver to get the Pro model?

I think mostly, the radio hardware is not possible to add on later. At a reduced price, the insecurity of not knowing what is to come, drives it.

I personally chose the Pro because I rather have too many options than not enough, and I am open to the idea that  the bluetooth and wifi connections can have interesting uses in the future. Who knows... maybe it will let us control wifi switches without  a nodeserver. The location options of bluetooth are also interesting. But I agree with you that it is safer to connect the Polisy to the router with an ethernet cable.

Pretty sure any Wi-Fi device I would control would be through the nearest Access Point and not directly to the Polisys radio. I think I'll risk it and just go with what I know I will use.

I have to agree with that one except for a few cases on WiFi possibly. I have a BT access point from 20 years ago and it never got any support and never became useful.
I also agree BT is mostly useless when the antenna is in the far corner of the basement but it is the buyer insecurity that is driving the preference AFAIC. What if....? What if....?

Given the common hardware for SOC's the Wifi and BT radios are on the same chip.  So the marketing is to hype both radios even though in practical use only one or possibly even none will be used.  It's always preferred to have a HA controller hard wired.  However the Wifi does provide a mobility advantage for including stubborn devices when needed.  I can see some edge cases for BT but again if the system is in the basement corner then those cases are now diminished as well.  As long as the system is open and hackable I'm sure someone will get creative though

I can't speak for others but I prefer the pro model to future proof myself. What I do today isn't the same as what I did yesterday. That will hold true for tomorrow.

I may never use the WiFi or Bluetooth, but for 50 bucks I'd rather have it just in case. The first time I need to move the isy to add a device will make it worth it. As technology changes and new capabilities arise, I want to have the opportunity to take advantage of it rather than standing on the sidelines wishing I could

Polisy looks to be revolutionary. I hope that UDI has time to include, maybe a bit later, a more user friendly administrative console (not Java based).

One question.. the dimensions are listed as 8x8x2, is the height number rounded from 1.750?

I'm asking because my ISY currently sits on a shelf with 1RU of space, will this fit onto a 1RU shelf?

 

 

What are the improvements to the ISY itself in this new hardware?  I am fine using my existing setup with a RPi3 as Poly server, but am very interested in anything that might add <Clarkson> more power! </Clarkson> to the ISY itself.  Like zippier interface performance, faster loading of program section, even bigger number of devices, etc.

One thing that would further this discussion would be some indication if WiFi/Bluetooth is available (or will be available) as an add-on from UDI (similar to the Z-Wave and IR add-ons), or if it's a now or never proposition (USB sticks aside)

@giesen, yes of course it will be available but, just like Z-Wave, it'll be higher in price 
@Blackbird, not really sure what screenshots you are looking for as, initially, the screenshot is that of Polyglot which YOU ALREADY HAVE SEEN. If you have not, install Polyglot on RPi and play with it as much as you wish
