Can't add Dual Band 2634-222

Trying to add 2634-222 outdoor module... gives "cannot determine insteon engine"... but appears to be communicating...

I had this problem a few months ago, and i just left the 2634-222 on my desk and tried it about 25-50 times, and it FINALLY kicked in (same thing for 2 of them).  I just got a couple more, same problem.  Once i FINALLY get them added, everything is fine!... my whole system runs great, and i just don't get why it's so (*&(*& hard to get devices ADDED.  I put a short video up showing my event viewer and you can hear it squawking when i press the reset button, and it sees it, gets ACK's etc.  I've moved it around, near PLM, away from it, near other dual-bands, etc... it's  not on a UPS/Filter, and as i said, my system works great.  What is so different when ADDING a device?? Any ideas?

Also see attached log...

The other option is to not use device linking. Without going to the device or touching it, pick New Insteon device and be prepared to enter the 6 hex digit unique device id xx.xx.xx

"Can't determine Insteon engine"  means that the PLM is unable to communicate with the device.  This can be due to noise on the powerline or the need for either more dual band devices or the fact that both sides of your powerline are not coupled.

Take a look at this video for resolution:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMx5yHTU2g4

Hey Fred!

It sounds like you have developed some electrical noise. The setup with a device is a lot more comm intensive than just sending single commands or getting status updates, so this is where most of the trouble shows up.

Did you get some new equipment lately, inverter, pump,  or have some bulbs flickering lately? Is there still pole work happening on 26 and possibly they have the grid circuits switched over to a poor temporary circuit? Does it clear up on the weekends or evenings?

Sorry!... i DID respond, but didn't make it here! (was wondering why no replies!)

Here goes again...

Haven't had time to do further trying or troubleshooting yet... here's my thoughts...

I'm wondering if there's a chance it could be my PLM (pretty old)...
-Could it possibly be that the PL(Powerline) is failing/dead, but RF ok, so not communicating for adding??
  (How can i know?)
(Can 'adding' a module use both PL&RF, or is it 'PL only' or 'RF only' when ADDING a dual-band plug-in module?)

How can i verify that PL is working? (maybe it's all RF at this point?)

I have a brand new PLM sitting waiting for my old one to die... how hard is it to swap PLM?

Also, if above fails, thinking to...
A> Shut all breakers off, JUST try with router/isy/plm by themselves
B> Drag all this shit over to a friend/relative (router/isy/plm)

thoughts??

hmmmm…. dragging your PLM and ISY to another clean location could be a good troubleshooting technique. Take an RF only device and a powerline only device to test both protocol. Some dual band devices have options to disable either protocol inside the remote device.

Possible trouble would be your ISY will bog down looking for dozens of devices. ("There's no place like home!...There's no place...." :)) You may have to do a backup, factory reset your ISY, take it for testing clean, and then restore system when done.

How hard is it to flip PLM?
Is there any way to see PL/RF comms at all in event viewer?

Thanks,

Yes, that was my FIRST attempted way... same thing... "cannot determine insteon engine"

(It's my preferred method, as you don't need to press the reset button at all)

OK step 1... changed PLM... it was CRAZY easy!

Still not linking, so onto step 2 (isolate a bunch of the house)

for PLM followed link below...

OK, that ended CRAP!... my quick test were zwave, and they worked, but not the rest.

So I'm back to my old PLM, and it's mostly working (one OD module isn't responding).

It showed connected, and looked like it was transferring... but NADDA.

Any tips to get my PLM switched over?

Larry, when you had to re-do your system... did you ever find "the culprit" in your system, or was there more that one thing, or did you even find the device / appliance causing your comm's to fail?

Now that i've replaced my PLM, put the old one back, and maybe a bad device, my system is TOAST... only about 5% working.

Can I somehow restore my devices / links one-by-one without resetting them, and having to re-link?

Any use restoring a backup to the ISY?

It WAS working really well, other than I couldn't add the couple of new outdoor modules...  what a mess!

Not sure best way to proceed now...

(having a disability, i can't go to all my modules, so i'm hoping there's a way to get back to "yesterday morning")

The only time I had to redo my system was when I tried to use the v4 UI with early v5 firmware and it made a mess. I had to reinstall V5 and  factory reset.
I replaced my PLM twice, never defective, and both still working fine but didn't block all my battery operated devices. The constant attempts to update my battery devices locked my ISY up for over 24 hours. That was a long repair to get my system back.

There is a proper process to change PLMs on the UDI wiki somewhere.

Other than that I had phantom Scenes turning on for about a year. That turned out to be an OnOff module sending them out in response to On commands. Simple power cycle on that one fixed it.

Thanks... I had messed that up, but thankfully found these steps added...:

Its easy to recover if you have done this;
- restart ISY (leaving the new PLM plugged into ISY - Important!)
- Do a "Restore Modem"
Whenever you restart ISY, it gets the address of the attached PLM, and that is the only time it ever does that.

I'm back hobbling around 80% now, so much better.

My zwave doorlock fails now... do i need to do something to get it up on (re: i healed zwave in the whole mess)

Most of zwave (blinds, doorbell, ZooZ, all working, just not doorlock, and it is in range!)
