Chamberlain MyQ as monitor only

Recommended Posts

Posted

Hi,

I've been browsing some of the topics on the forum but couldn't find any information.

I have MyQ Smart Hub and Wireless door sensor from Chamberlain, I don't have Chamberlain compatible garage doors so opening/closing doors won't be possible but I'd like to use Smart Hub + door sensor for monitoring status of the doors.

Basically what I'd like to do is add the smart hub to MyQ (or any other application you recommend), skip part for pairing with garage door opener (since I don't have a compatible GDO with smart hub) and pair only door sensor with the hub.

Can you please guide me to proper link on this forum or this isn't possible at all.

You may want to ask Chamberlain or check their support forum. It may be possible to set up using a smartphone and skip the pairing step with the GDO.

Alternatively, you could set up a wireless door sensor at the edge of the door for another system and use it instead of the MyQ. Insteon has a wired sensor/low voltage controller (IOLinc) that can be wired to a spare GDO transmitter for status and control of any GDO. MyQ is nice but you can replicate functionality with other products.

If you have zwave, theres a tilt sensor which would work better for you

I was going to edit and add that and you beat me to it. Add in a Z-wave low voltage relay switch, solder two wires to switch terminals in a remote, connect to the relay switch and you have a roll-your own GDO control.

Already asked Chamberlain support and they said it can work only with Chamberlain compatible doors or they just blew me off. You can't skip pairing with GDO, maybe someone else know how to do it.

Unless you have numerous other MyQ products dependent on the MyQ hub, you may want to use Zwave or Insteon. You can probably get back what you paid for it if you sold it.

Did you even try to pair it? The app has a way for monitor only

Bought it on ebay.

I did but the app is asking to pair first with door opener (screenshots attached), do you have any idea how to set monitoring mode with door sensor?

Go through the process. It'll eventually fail and put you in monitor mode only

Unfortunately it doesn't work, it says No devices were added. Please try again later.

Unfortunately I can't help you. The few times I've had a door fail to add, it automatically went into monitoring mode with the sensor. Maybe there's a problem with your hub. I'd check on myq forums or give their support another call

I have 2 hubs, doubt both of them are malfunctioning.

Support is very uncooperative, if you are not using hub with chamberlain doors they won't move a muscle to help.

That hasn't been my experience with them. Unfortunately your experience is different than mine. You could give their forums a shot

1. Find a friend with a Chamberlain GDO.
2. Unplug your WiFi router and disconnect it from your network.
3. Buy something your friend likes to consume.
4. Go to your friend’s house with router, hubs, door sensors, masking tape, and consumables.
5. Set up your router in your friend’s house. You can just plug into an Ethernet port.
6. Set up your hubs using your WiFi credentials and your friend’s GDO. Use masking tape to temporarily secure door sensors.
7. Toast success with consumable.
8. Unplug your stuff and go home.
9. Reconnect, and install your stuff at home. Hub should not care if it can’t control an absent GDO.

The hubs need a strong WiFi signal, so you might want to use a cheap access point that you can set up as a unique wireless network anyway, and keep it near the hub.

@tom2020 Welcome to the forums. However, I don't see how you can get much additional support here. This is intended to be support for users of the ISY994i or Polisy products offered by Universal Devices. Your posts appear to be specific to MyQ and Chamberlain products. If those forums or those support lines cannot assist I'm not sure what you want to achieve by asking users of this forum.

As you've experienced our users are very helpful and trying to assist based on their own experience and knowledge, but as @lilyoyo1 states you're probably best directing your questions and issues with the manufacturer (and their communities) directly.

@bhihifi HAHA! Although, you forgot to add the part about getting an Uber/Lyft (or other DD) to get you back home. Assuming the "consumables" you speak of are adult beverages or other "recreational consumables" that can be enjoyed in more and more states these days.

I mean...after all...let's all be responsible!

Guys, thanks everyone for suggestions and advices, thanks to bhihifi as well, I thought about it but since I live in Europe Chamberlain GDOs are not that common here so I can't check it with neighbor or a friend :)

Anyway I managed to find what was the problem, since I wanted only to get status of the doors, no control for it, during account creation I selected Europe so I was offered only devices available in Europe, once I created a new account and selected US for location all devices for US market were available to me :)

Would've been great for you to supply that type of information in the very beginning. Could've saved us a lot of time

When  you're talking about different countries, many things can behave differently due to differing local restrictions
