Installing Admin Console in new Windows 11 PC

All;

I just got a new Lenovo Laptop that came with Windows 11.   I want to install the admin console so I can back up my ISY 994i 256 so that I can then upgrade to the eisy home that will replace the 994i soon.

Unfortunately,  I can't get the Admin Console to install to the new PC.   I have a ticket in with Universal Devices,  but so far we are not having success.   I suspect I need a different version of java on the new machine,  and after trying with the most recent version available from Oracle,  I'm stuck.  I get a brief window that opens and closes when i use start.jnlp, but it does not install anything to the desktop so I can log into the ISY.  When I log in to the ISY at it's interface,  I get the basic console,  but when clicking on the Admin Console, I just get the white page that asks me to leave it open.  but no login page.

ISY is

Model

Platform ISY-C-994

Version 5.3.4

Build Timestamp 2021-07-07-14:46:02

Any thoughts ?   I have a backup from 2021, so I suppose I could just try ordering the eisy and a new power line modem and try to do the upgrade in the blind with an old backup,  but if I can't event connect to my old controller with the new PC, I am reluctant to start sinking more cash into this ecosystem, which has been so good to me in the past.

FIRST, Have you installed Java?   Hint, a higher number following the word Java doesn't mean better, it means different version, different purpose, different features.   Specifically, you want to install Java 8 from https://www.java.com (you might get other versions to work, but you're on your own for java platform adjustments to make it work, Java 8 is the intended supported version of Java.

Second, Install The IoX Launcher.   The first time IoX Launcher is run it will both install an IoX Launcher icon on your desktop AND start your first admin console instance. image.png.dda311e180d4aee78fc899c8388b02c6.png In the future use that Icon to launch the admin console.  (the IoX Launcher icon is different that just re-running the start.jnlp file that is downloaded to install.)

Mr. Bill;  Thanks.  I have to run out for a little while, but I will try it tonight.  I was almost certain that I needed to work with Java first.   I had  just un installed what I had to begin a new try.  The one I had was Java SE Development Kit 19.0.2 which I was pretty sure was wrong....but I needed to know what was likely to work.  I'll try again shorty using Java 8.  Get it from the Oracle site ?

We'll see how it goes.

Mr. Bill;

Thanks for the directions.  I'm sure you saved me hours puzzling it out!   I now have a new backup and the admin console pinned to my taskbar.  I'm going to start down the path of replacing my ISY before it becomes unsupported.

Any experience with converting from the ISY to the eisy | home ?   I think all I need is the eisy and in my case the serial PLM kit... then I should be good to go for as long as the eisy has support.  That should be a good long time.

Correct that's all you should need to migrate.   I have an eisy but haven't yet migrated.  I was going to in early January but ended up waiting for various reasons, now I just need to find the time.

Understood.   I think I also want to understand the new product a bit better.   I thought it was just a modern ISY,  but with a phone app to do the setup,  I am wondering if there is still something like the admin console from a PC that I will use to create and maintain my programs.   I'll do a little study.   At least I have a backup from today to start from.

Yes, the eisy has Admin Console that is identical to the ISY994. There are a few changes for support of the eisy and if you run node servers it will add additional devices.

And I think you can also setup eisy without the phone app, but the app does make it a lot easier (for most).

Remember if you make any changes to your ISY994 to make a new backup before migration so it's current. Don't think today's backup will be the best option if you tinker with things and forget about it before you get the eisy and migrate.

Lots of great threads in IoX Support and eisy forums area as well as the UDI Wiki to read through to learn more.

All;

I'm trying to choose my upgrade path.  Right now I have an ISY 994 with a serial PLM.   I could get the new eisy and also get a new PLM with an IP connection....but then I have to get both of them working before I have my system back.   The other idea is to get the EISY and the serial adapter and stay with the old PLM.  But I know they have a limited life,  so then I'd probably replace the PLM in short order anyway.

Any thoughts on the right path ?

@Eric

I'd migrate to eisy without upgrading your PLM.  Then once you get post-migration kinks worked out replace the PLM with a USB PLM (It's not "an IP connection") which will introduce a different set of kinks to work out.

The swap PLMs procedure is fairly intense, because when it happens many links in all insteon devices must be updated.  Migration is also involved.  I'd favor divide and conquer, one upgrade at a time.  Yes, it's a little more expensive because you must buy or make the specialized serial to USB cable.

@Eric It's a personal call as to what you WANT to upgrade to. Just take your time to explore the options and what you're comfortable in undertaking to migrate. I would probably lean more toward migrating with the existing (working) PLM. Then when you're able to buy a USB PLM have it available as a spare/backup should the existing PLM fail.

The new eisy uses a PLM with USB connection. not sure what "IP connection" you're mentioning.

I migrated from ISY994 with existing serial PLM using the Serial DB9 cable that came with the PLM that I still had and added the USB/Serial cable so the process was fairly simple for my system. If you don't have the serial cable you have to add the DB9 adaptor and can buy the kit that UDI sells to make the cable needed to go from existing PLM to eisy.

Although the process does give you the option to replace PLM during the migration steps if you purchased a new USB PLM to go with the new eisy.

And @MrBill replied during my reply saying about the same.

Everything said above is good advice.

I migrated from Polisy to eisy in early March and I wanted to keep my Polisy ready to go in the event the migration had issues or failed. Therefore, I elected to use a new USB PLM I already had.

My experience was the upgrade to eisy and the new PLM went without a hitch. The only manual intervention I had to do was with ZWave and what is spelled out in the documents (resaving programs & network resources).
