Make KPL LED reflect status of the light

Featured Replies

I know this is on here somewhere but I cant find it.

I have a few light that are triggered by their device (SWL or Lamplinc) but are also turned on by a KPL button (not the load)

I have the scene that has the device and the KPL button (as controller)

How do I make the LED light up when the light is on and shut off when the light is off?

I know I'm supposed to add it to the scene but when I try it says its already a member of the scene

  • Author

I put them both in as controllers now but the LED still doesn't light up when the device is on.

I'm unclear what I'm doing wrong?

I have a program that watches the status of the light(s) in question, and have the program turn on the KPL appropriate LED.

If turned on/off by the keypad, or by the switch/module, the keypad button would reflect this status because of the scene. Is it possible that there is a program that is turning on the switch/module, or that the switch/module is a member of another scene?

To isolate which it is, you can try temporarily adding a 3rd nearby device to the scene as a responder. Switch the SWL - What happens, does the new device also come on?

If the new nearby test device comes on, it's the keypad. Keypads can 'lose their way' after long periods of use. If updating the scene or restore device didn't work, factory reset it and restore device.

@andrew77 , my go to for troubleshooting problems of this nature is using the Event Viewer on Level 3. I generated a test Scene that contains a KPL, LampLinc, and a SWL Dimmer. All 3 devices are controllers. Any of the 3 devices will turn the scene On/Off and the KPL Button "A" will track the On/Off.

I did this to show you what you "should" be seeing in the event viewer when you activate the scene devices. If you think you are seeing something different, you likely have a device link table error or communication issues. Post back and we can work through those.

When you activate a "Device" in a scene it should

  1. communicate with group members through Group 01 (for simple devices) or Groups 1 - 8 for KPL's. This will show up in the event viewer as shown below.

  2. Request a group cleanup from group members to verify they received the command. This includes your PLM.

In the following I am showing addresses for my devices:

  • 16.CE.23 is my SWL Dimmer (your dimmer address will be different. The Group # 00.00.01 should be present in your event viewer.

  • My PLM is at Address 53.BC.3A (yours will obviously be different). The group 1 cleanup commands between your device and your PLM should be present.

  • I used KPL button "A" as the controller for my Scene (6 button mode). This works out to be group 3 when the device activates the scene. If you use a different button (or are using 8 button mode) the group # will be different.

I pressed the SWL (non dimming) on and off,

then asked Alexa to turn the light on and off

then pressed the KPL button on and off.

(I'm sure you can figure that out from what it says above but I don't know what I'm looking at

As an aside I still see this when I open the GUI

(its the latest device I added)

When you ask Alexa to turn it on, is it turning on the scene, or an individual device within the scene? If the latter, this could explain one way your devices are getting out of sync.

@andrew77 , thank you for the Log. Your devices are communicating very well.

then asked Alexa to turn the light on and off

Your Alexa command was processed correctly. However, it was directed to the SWL @71.1B.2E, not your scene. This command will only turn on that specific device.

then pressed the KPL button on and off.

Your KPL button appears to be button "H" on an 8 button KPL (group 7). It also performed correctly in communicating to the PLM and had excellent communications (Max Hops=3, Hops Left=3).

In summary, your devices appear to be communicating correctly and well with the PLM. While it's possible that your SWL isn't communicating well with your KPL, that's unlikely.

My guess would be that you have a link table error in one or both of your devices. Could your post The scene that you are using for these devices? It should look something like the following.

Failing a scene membership issue, we'll need to look at the link tables in the devices themselves. We'll leave that for another post...

When you ask Alexa to turn it on, is it turning on the scene, or an individual device within the scene? If the latter, this could explain one way your devices are getting out of sync.

I’m pretty sure Alexa triggers the device and not the scene. I thought there was an easier way of making the KPL Led light up when the light it triggers is lit

As @oberkc indicated, your Alexa command is turning on the SWL device ONLY - not the scene. Your KPL button will not change because you are commanding the specific device, not the scene.

I an completely Alexa ignorant. I'm assuming there is a way to turn on your Scene rather than the specific SWL device.

It's not that hard. In the UDI portal where you defined the relationship with the Insteon switch, you move the entry for the switch, and add an entry for the scene instead of the switch.

Login to the portal. Tool > Connetivity> Amazon Echo

Delete the line for the switch and add the scene
