fanlinc

I know this has been around for ever. I just got a eisy and the 6 button key pad doesnt seem to work like it did with the eisy.

CAN ANY ONE that has a fool proof set up share. I read so many in the isy forum only to get confused to with one work and not. Some say creat more the one scene. Other say about ungrooping button. I never have tdone that and dont understand that all.

One can do it with a single scene, or multiple scenes. The benefit of a single scene is, in my mind, simplicity. If all you need to do is control a fanilinc with a keypad, it works well and does not overly complicate your device and scene listing and arguably make it easier to visualize. However, if you plan to use programs, ud mobile, or external control (such as alexa, google) then multiple scenes has definite advantages in the ability to call the various fan speeds.

What are your intentions?

I think everyone has their own favorite setup where Fanlincs are concerned. I have used just scenes but find it confusing because you have to have a scene for every button with every button added. And the individual buttons in each scene have to be set to the correct on/off state. And if one button is set incorrectly somewhere, it is a nightmare to sort out.

I personally find this "scene only" setup confusing. So, I use a combination of scenes and programs.

The procedure assumes the Fanlinc has permanent power.

1) Create a scene for each of the A/B/C/D buttons where the only item in the scene is the button as a controller

2) Create a program for each fan speed that when a speed button is pressed, it activates the required fan speed and turns off the other button scenes. The result being "radio" buttons that keep all the buttons in sync.

3) Assuming you are using the Fanlinc to also control the light, this light program is just the light button - no scene needed.

4) Finally, I have a "catch all" program for All Off. It activates if you click one of the speed buttons that is already on to off. It activates the Off scene and program. This makes sure that at least one fan speed button is lit at all times.

BTW - the use of the OFF scene and programs is optional with this procedure. To turn the fan off, just click to currently lit speed button. Just remove all programs, scenes and references to the OFF setting. Sometimes an extra button is more valuable than a Fan Off key.

My keypad. Good Luck!

And just for reference, this is the "using scenes only" approach that I used. Each step had to be done for each button. I never use this approach anymore.

While this might not be "fool proof" it's something that UD released after a lengthy discussion in another post (probably one that you've read and got confused by). I think @jkmcfadden is right that everybody has their own way to setup a fanlinc. There's not really a "wrong" way to do it as long as the way you do it works for you. But what might work for you might not work for others.

I found where things get messy is trying to keep buttons in sync if/when you use Alexa or even a mobile app to change the fan speed. This is where programs are often used to adjust the button being light to match the actual speed of the fan. I set my Fanlinc and Keypads up in 4.x and didn't have to make any changes in 5.x because I have programs in place to keep things in sync. Also, I really don't care what button is light up if/when the fan is on as if the button wasn't pressed to set the speed then Alexa was and it will be at whatever speed it is until it gets adjusted or turned off. I'm just not finicky enough (aka OCD) to care about lights on a keypad on the wall compared to the speed of a fan in the middle of the room. To me...if the fan is on some light on the keypad might be on. I don't care which.

The scenes per button were a little daunting to setup but they’ve been flawless for me. The plus for me is it’s there and doesn’t need a controller to work so if eISY happens to be offline or you get line noise etc it still functions.
