How to migrate from ISY994i/ir to EISY

Featured Replies

I bought the EISY, serial cable, zwave dongle about 1.5-2 years ago, but never had the guts or time to upgrade my ISY994i/iR.
I have lots of Insteon devices, zwave locks, about 25 4&8 button remotes, and now MS making it tough to get to some of the devices.

I don't even know where to look to find the best upgrade method/steps.

Any direction and cautions VERY MUCH appreciated!

(My ISY has gone bezerk, taking 10seconds to minutesto respond, and some "out of memory" errors have crept in from somewhere)

I do have in ISY backup from before this mess started, so can I use that to start up the EISY?

Can I get the EISY up and running and still get to the ISY to "look" at things while I switch over?

THANKS!

@johnstonf

What type of devices are in Motion3 and Vacuum program with the out of memory? Can you post a copy of that program.

You should correct all the errors in the 994 before migrating

@johnstonf for the issue about time to respond (even though 10 seconds isn't that long) you would want to look to see if you have anything set in the memory usage for the java process.

Take a look here: https://wiki.universal-devices.com/Main_Page#Admin_Console_is_very_slow_or_hangs (note this was written a long time ago so the number can be increased depending on how much system memory you have. Java is not a friendly memory user and usually uses just enough it thinks to run. If you set a minimum level it could help your response time, but not guaranteed.

For the "out of memory" usually this would indicate two possible issues.

1) Firmware and UI mismatch. Go to Help -> About and make sure Firmware and UI match versions. (Since you didn't mention what version are you running? With z-wave also need to know what version z-wave controller you have

The immediate physical differences between the 2 boards is that the 300 series card has a blue light in the back of the isy while the 500 does not.

(Source: https://forum.universal-devices.com/topic/29371-zwave-tips-and-tricks/)

2) Have you deleted devices recently or are some devices not connected/communicating with the ISY994? The program will have a broken line and just needs to have the device reselected then SAVE the program(s). You can right click on one of the lines that says "Out of Memory" and then "Edit" to go directly to that program. Check that all devices show up in the program. You might have some "//" comment lines if the device is missing. If you're not able to select the device then you have bigger issues and need to re-add the device. Then you can come back and fix the program.

Since you haven't been updating the eisy once you have the errors fixed in the ISY994 you should (must) open a support ticket with UD (https://www.universal-devices.com/my-tickets) to get help bringing the system up to current status. There have been a lot of updates and several have bricked older devices that have not been updated along the way.

Let's focus on fixing the ISY994 issues here. Then you can work with UD to bring the eisy up to date then work on the migration.

Not advisable since the ISY994 would be in "safe mode" without a PLM attached. I don't think it would let you "look" at things you want to do.

I strongly suggest making a digital backup of all programs. Right click on the root folder of the program "Details" page. Select "Copy folder to clipboard" (be sure you select "COPY"). Then paste what you've copied into a TEXT EDITOR (not a word file/app) - for windows I suggest Note Pad. Then you have a digital copy of all programs that is "easy" to read and allows you to know if the program was enabled or disabled, but also gives you exact times if you have scheduled programs that you rely on so you don't have to recreate these from memory if/when something breaks in the migration.

Again, fix the ISY994 first. Then focus on updating the eisy and then migration.

My ISY994i seems to also be rebooting often in a day. I tried another P/Sstill reboots

Where can i see the UPTIME?

I'm wondering if maybe the microSD is corrupt?
I have a new 16GB ordered coming tomorrow...

I deleted the Motion and Vacuum programs, so I can't see them...

I agree, I'd like to get the errors out before proceeding

As I recall the out of memory on a program is misleading. It typically meant a device or variable that was used in the program has been deleted.

The SD cards have a tendency to fail after time, howerver you can try removing power from the ISY, then remove the SD card and clean its contacts with a soft eraser. The contacts are prone to oxidation and cleaning them restores connectivity.

Also look for programs that may be running in a loop

Besides uptime, can I also see the CPU utilization, and processes? Might give me some clue if programs were in the loop, but I haven't even changed anything for a long time, and it was working fine, at least a couple of months ago was running pretty smooth
