  1. No issues here, but then I am still running the 4 branch ISY.
  2. I think the siren and flashing light are for people with disabilities, not to chase away animals.
  3. Seems like your setup is not UL or code compliant. You have been advised. https://www.cepro.com/article/potential_legal_liabilities_for_integrating_garage_doors_with_home_automati
  4. Non dimmable CFLs or LEDs on dimmer module can cause that. I’ve also seen when CFLs start to fail. Look for carbon buildup on at the base of tubes and base is hot. I’ve seen unreliable Insteon communication when CFL start to fail, which clears up once I replace the offending CFL. Now that LEDs have come down in price and reliability has improved, I’ve been slowly replacing CFL with LED. Also swapping out dimmer modules for relay modules. Only dimmers modules are on dimmable LED floods, which basically eliminate the heat load in a room vs a incandescent.
  5. I moved my GD control/status from an IOLinc to an Elk relay output and zone input. The IOLinc has a high failure rate and random all on events people have reported make the IOLinc not suitable to control something which could cause damage or personal injury.
  6. Then explain to me when I simply shout “Hey!” within range of the Echo that I see lots of new packet traffic from the Echo to Amazon. Perhaps it’s a failover strategy if the Echo can’t determine on its own if that was the trigger phrase. Apple poked at Amazon on stage at WWDC over this.
  7. Good decision. Has anyone else run Wireshark and watched the traffic from the Echo? The Echo, likely the Show as well, does all its voice recognition on Amazon servers, even the trigger phrase. That means all sound above a threshold is sent to Amazon. This eliminates the need for those three letter government organizations to perform a black bag operation on your home to install wiretapping devices. Not sure how Google Voice is implemented. Apple devices perform speech recognition locally on the device when they switched from Nuance to their own home grown speech recognition many years ago.
  8. The IOLinc has a high failure rate and exhibits unexpected behavior which can cause your garage door to randomly open or close. I use the Elk output 3 and a zone input for status.
  9. Mobilinc Connect and ISY Portal are mutually exclusive. Head to Mobilinc topic for news on google home support.
  10. Apple pays me to use their products, paid with profits from investing in Apple stock. Full disclosure, I also own Amazon and Alphabet.
  11. Google trying to undercut Apple's rumored smart speaker? We'll know more in about 1 hour.
  12. I replaced my chime with an electronic one which has a RF button I placed at my back door and has a different chime. I also use an ELK-930 doorbell detection module and wired to an Elk input. It's designed for use with solenoid chimes, so you will multiple threshold crossings while the chime melody is playing. You can make it work If you set a virtual output in and include in you Elk rules of statement to trigger an action only once for the duration of the melody. Before wiring the 930 directly to the Elk, I wired the 930 to an IOLinc input and wired the relay output to the RF button. I could remotely control my door bell without any trouble. I stopped using the IOLinc because of the high failure rate of the device and for other reasons I was able to free up an Elk zone input. For smoke/co detection, I went with a Kidde RemoteLync detector, which works with any smoke manufactured since the 70's. It has IFTTT support which I can use the maker channel to invoke any ISY action or program.

I can already do the same thing with a repurposed iPad and Siri. And with Homebridge (aka HomeKit) Siri can already control my ISY, Elk, and view cameras. Even remotely and on my Apple Watch. I'll wait to read actual customer reviews and see if Apple launches a similar product at WWDC.

Will there be a developer SDK for native apps or the same skills as existing Echo?
  15. Does it come with any add on modules/plugins? I.e. Network resources, weather, portal, etc.
  16. I guess all these stories of insurance companies denying claims for lack of forced entry evidence are all "fake news." https://www.bing.com/search?q=insurance+claim+denied+no+forced+entry&form=APIPH1&PC=APPL I have nothing to worry about then. I'm going leave all my doors and windows unlocked and a huge "free stuff" sign in front. Great way to get insurance company to pay for "new stuff."
  17. I can't believe people are still asking about and doing this. If you don't mind, please place the Echo next to a first floor window and post a picture to Facebook the next time you are out of town. Make sure the picture has location information embedded in the photo so I can simply enter the coordinates into any maps application. I'll be sure not to leave any sign of forced entry so the police claim you left the door open and your insurance company denies your claim.
  18. I don't remember how much I paid, but I bought the BleuStation 3-pack starter dev kit. I think is was around $40 limited time promotion.
  19. I went with the BleuStation because I didn't want another battery operated device to manage and deal with proper disposal of the used batteries.
  20. I bought a three pack (when they were available) of BleuStation 100's and have them working with MLHD for home/away presence detection. The Blu Setup app is only required if you want to change the default ID, assign a password, change the major/minor setting. The Geohopper app is only required if you want to use it for detecting presence, send notifications, or trigger IFTTT. https://www.twocanoes.com/products/hardware/bleu-station A useful app for detecting BT beacons is BLExplr I spent a great deal of time adjusting the locations and signal amplitudes of three beacons in my home in anticipation of ML support thinking I could use proximity to trigger programs as I enter/exit a room. While low power BTLE is great basic presence detection, unfortunately BT distance ranging requires battery draining high power BT. Not really appropriate on a mobile device. The only use case I have come up with is for home/away detection to set an ISY variable in combination with a GeoFence trigger write of a second variable to decide whether to arm the Elk in stay or away mode.
  21. Even the best security is not going to stop them from trying. Just don't make it easy for them and make sure when they do, it leaves signs of forced entry. Otherwise, the cops and your insurance company will claim you left the door open or gave out the keys. Claim denied! Cameras will only help identify them after the crime has been committed, or in your self defense case.
  22. The point being is the trend in HA and home security is toward wireless communication to make it easier to install for both the consumer and professional. Most operate in unlicensed frequency bands which provides no guaranteed operation and can be susceptible to interference from any number of sources (other unlicensed devices, microwaves, solar radiation, etc.) Especially in a densely populated urban setting with potentially hundreds of unlicensed spectrum devices nearby. That is why I prefer wired (security system, communication, etc) option if it's available. Not that wired doesn't have it own problems, but those are usually easily solvable (filters, grounding, shielding, etc.)
  23. I use an Elk relay out for GD control (always while observing the door) and don't have random GD opening.
  24. I've had a car remote stop working randomly one morning. The next day I read in the news that earth was hit with solar flares during the time I had trouble. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/technology/2014/06/solar-flares-disrupt-communications-on-earth-could-send-shockwave-on-friday-the-13th/ I suppose a solar flare could cause all sorts of havoc, including cause a garage door opener in a parked car to send its code. I personally do not have random all on events, but then I've gone to great lengths to keep power line polluting wall transformers on a surge protector or at least a power strip with 5 ft cord. I also only have a couple dual band powerline/RF devices. I try to avoid them if I can.
  25. Precisely why I don't use an IOLinc for garage door. Nor for security or safety functions. Also Insteon is not a secure protocol. Insteon protocol has already been comprised by a number of different white-hat hackers.
