Replace ISY

I have an ISY994i/IR Pro (Insteon only) that I've been using for many years.  I would like to swap it for a model with Insteon + zwave support.  I would also like to keep my existing PLM.  How difficult is this?  Something tells me I won't be able to backup/restore since I'll be going to the zwave/Insteon model (but hopefully I'm wrong).  I'm running v5.0.13A and I also have the ISY portal and ELK modules installed.

I would suggest you contact UDI, all you would need is to purchase the ZWave dongle and ZWave module and install it in your existing ISY.

When you buy and add the zwave dongle to your existing ISY there's no need to back up or restore anything within your existing Insteon network. Your existing PLM will remain.   Basically Zwave operates independently from the Insteon devices. Zwave has a backup option in the ISY.

Zwave uses RF only and does not  use or require a PLM.

I have done just this and it took me a few minutes and it was really easy.

Make sure you z-wave upgrade and factory reset before you get started. I would also suggest you upgrade to 5.0.14.

What devices do you want to use with Z-wave?

I am currently at 5.014d so I should be in great shape from that perspective. I want to work with Zwave locks and possibly some new switches. Most of my home indoors and out is Insteon but I do have Ecobee thermostats and still have two upstairs rooms that I never automated I would like to experiment with Zwave on those rooms. I have an Orbi router with two satellites and I have a HUE hub and a SmartThings hub.  My intranet is mostly wireless but response using network resources is nearly instant. I will be interested to see how the Zwave RF performs a if WiFi/rf inteference becomesan issue. I am hoping the gen II Zwave works well with its improved signal strength.

You will want to make sure every device you purchase has zwave plus to take advantage of any zwave plus benefits.

I just installed a Dome automatic water shutoff module that is z-wave.  Other than that I don't see myself adding too many other zwave devices.  But it's nice to have that option.

Why do you recommend doing a factory reset?

The factory reset is recommended and it ensures that you start fresh. The reset is for the z-wave module only and does not affect any insteon stuff.
