Thanks, but that answers the heat issue (which I'm not concerned about), not the size issue.

You would have to follow the research links to find out the sizes. The closest I have seen, without further research,  is 8x8x2, as posted. I doubt it would fit in a 1 unit rack height. Need to got to 1.5 unit shelf space probably.

One question.. the dimensions are listed as 8x8x2, is the height number rounded from 1.750?

I'm asking because my ISY currently sits on a shelf with 1RU of space, will this fit onto a 1RU shelf?

I'm guessing this is the enclosure:

https://pcengines.ch/case1d2bluu.htm

Dimensions 168 mm wide x 157 mm deep x 30 mm high

Picture of enclosure linked above:

Picture of Polisy:

However, only UDI would be able to confirm for sure, and it may be that they have not finalized on the enclosure, hence only the rough dimensions provided. Also, it does not appear to have a rackmount kit available, but if the dimensions are accurate, it's only 1.18" high, leaving at least 0.5" for a shelf while still fitting within a 1U (1.75") space.

It also appears at least one company (LinITX) makes a rackmount enclosure for the PC Engines APU2:

Which in theory means you can probably remove the Polisy board from the existing case and move it to this case for a proper rackmount solution (possible warranty issues aside).

Here's a rack shelf designed to fit APU2 units (no concerns about voiding warranty) from Atlante Informatica:

@giesen,

Dimensions are correct but you have to consider the accessories such as antennas (for WiFi and Bluetooh) and USB sticks. Also, you might want to use GPIO pins at some point.

With kind regards,
Michel

Perfect.  Since I won't be using antennas and did not order the pro (Bluetooth lacks the range and I have hardwired WAPs and Ethernet drops in every room) this is almost ideal.  It can sit on the same shelf as the ISY994! :)

It wouldn't have been a deal-breaker if it couldn't, but not having to move shelves around is certainly a nice benefit.

Just wondering if there is any coincidence between the UDI device and this-  https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/raspberry-pi-4-on-sale-now-from-35/

Just funny that they were announced at within a few week of each other.  ;-)

Raspberry Pi 4 Model B

Here are the highlights:

  • A 1.5GHz quad-core 64-bit ARM Cortex-A72 CPU (~3× performance)
  • 1GB, 2GB, or 4GB of LPDDR4 SDRAM
  • Full-throughput Gigabit Ethernet
  • Dual-band 802.11ac wireless networking
  • Bluetooth 5.0
  • Two USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 ports
  • Dual monitor support, at resolutions up to 4K
  • VideoCore VI graphics, supporting OpenGL ES 3.x
  • 4Kp60 hardware decode of HEVC video
  • Complete compatibility with earlier Raspberry Pi products

Just noticed that it's based on the PC Engines APU2, very interesting.

Not even close. RPI is licensed and UDI couldn't use it without licencing costs. RPi uses a microSD card for ROM.  PCengines uses a proper SDD.

Nice they have gone to the USB-C connector. It may stand up to the increased current making and breaking when power reboots are required.

Faster I/O would be nice. I use my one RPi 3 for browsing. Barely fast enough for the extreme CPU power needed today with all the animated advertising.

Oh look! Again $35 = $167.12 CAD by the time you get an actual usable computer, on a preorder. Full desktops are getting down into the same price range.

@Michel Kohanim

Did the discounted price on the preorder have anything to do with the fact that UDI cant justify charging the full price until the polisy is capable of becoming a fully functional isy?  Or is it simply a sale?

@Blackbird,

No! For over 13 years, we have provided FREE firmware updates and for the past 8 years, on one product: ISY994. So, we are thanking those who believe in us with a discount. And, we are thanking developers with even more discounts. And, we are thanking those who have already developed Polys with a free unit. So, it's about thanking our community rather than justifying ourselves. We have already justified our existence, ethics, and integrity many times over.

With kind regards,
Michel

Many vendors do this as they gather a large first order to help pay for the development costs and get their product off the ground. UDI is having this standard CPU system customised to meet their needs better. The initial cost would be high but spread out over a larger userbase would spread the cost out.

Imagine only four of us having these units, and then  asking for help or discussing some quirk in the system.

It's the right thing to do and ISY is going to be pushed past it's CPU speed comfort levels with so many options for it, and more to come.
I have applaud UDI and this has been some time coming.

 I believe you misunderstood me.  I did not think that UDI needs to justify themselves nor do I think the Polisy is a rip off.  My comment about "cant justify the price" was meant to understand if the price was discounted because the polisy wont have met it's full potential yet, therefore for now, charging less.  No need to get defensive as I am a big supporter of UDI and have been for years.  Thanks for the discounted price.

@Blackbird,

Thank you for the clarification but I didn't misunderstand you. The discount is for a "limited time" and ends on July 5. So, if the discount was a justification for lack of full potential, then it would have lasted till October or even later. Again, the discounts are just to say thank you.

Michel

Just to add to what Michel said, one thing you'll see is UDI is different than most companies. This shows in how loyal and protective it's forum members are of UDI.

Take a look at them adding zwave, the 5.0 firmware, as well as nodeservers. When the 994 cake out it was insteon only. Sure they should add features like most companies such as voice assistant support. However the system that most people purchased is completely different now than it was when first released. In a sense, you truly have a brand new system.

Most companies would have released a new controller and make you buy that to take advantage of all that they've released. Sure, they may give a discount to existing users but you're still paying.

Even with Polisy. As a business, all it needs to do is be plug and play to connect to polyglot. That will justify is expense right there. Sure, one could do it themselves with an RPI but they have to do the work themselves (even udi Made doing that easier). Instead of simply creating an add on box to bridge the gap between the ISY 994 and 994 2.0 they are working to bring it to something they already have vs. needing to buy another controller.

I'm hoping it wont be too long before the polisy can be used as an isy.

Most likely it'll be longer than you would like. UDI isn't the type to release something half baked upon the public. They are very meticulous. I wouldn't get it now expecting it to replace your ISY quickly

Hopefully they have already been testing it.  Anyway hope it's not long

I'm just giving you a heads up to avoid anguish and frustration on your part if it doesn't come as fast as you like. I'd temper expectations. 5.0 is a perfect example of that.

UDI's testing and release decisions are alot more stringent than most companies. That generally means a longer time for release but much smoother upgrade path.
