universal1 Posted October 27, 2019 Posted October 27, 2019 Right now I have a few ISY99i units doing different things. I am thinking about having backup units available. I only have one unit that has IR so I bought an IR chip to install in a backup unit. I was hoping a backup of old unit and restore to backup unit would work but it looks like I need to buy an IR module just to test it? Are module licenses transferable if a unit dies? What if Universal Devices isn't around anymore?

They are quite committed and very responsive.
universal1 Posted October 27, 2019 Author Posted October 27, 2019 (edited) Technically they won't support an ISY99i which is discontinued. Maybe they will do a module license transfer. Who knows. If they truly don't support ISY99i units then maybe they should have a patch that unlocks all modules for discontinued units. Sure it might lose a few trade-up sales but it would greatly increase customer satisfaction and goodwill. I hesitate to invest in companies that don't design for full life-cycle. Planned obsolescence is a big red flag for me. So is "products as a service". As soon as all companies in this market require a cloud connection I will open my own company with internet independent products. Edited October 27, 2019 by universal1
lilyoyo1 Posted October 27, 2019 Posted October 27, 2019 (edited) The 99 had a full life and only reached end of life due to hardware limitations not planned obsolescence. Even when they came out with the 994 to handle what they were trying to do at that time, they continued to upgrade and support the 99 until the 99 simply couldn't support the newer capabilities without severely hampering user experience. It doesn't hurt to ask if they will transfer for you. They are usually willing to go above and beyond to help people. Modules are part of the unit you purchased not cloud based. Should UDI go out of business, everything you currently own would still work, you just wouldn't be able to move modules around should something break. The ISY is still locally based. UDI has confirmed and re-affirmed their commitment to producing a locally based hub. Unfortunately, many products on the market is cloud based so they have developed ways to integrate with those using the cloud. The main functions of the isy is and shall always be locally based. universal1 Posted October 27, 2019 Author Posted October 27, 2019 You lie. You said you would not offer help anymore to me :D But thanks for your view. I am just looking at backups right now so I am looking for information not a module transfer at this point. Planning is important. Hopefully planning is never obsolete :D

Brian H Posted October 27, 2019 Posted October 27, 2019 (edited) Not sure if this can apply to the older ISY99i or if the present method. Lets you transfer the purchased modules to another ISY controller with a different UUID as that is what the purchased module uses to see if it is on the correct controller. The registered owner can purchase modules, activate and deactivate registered ISY products they own. https://wiki.universal-devices.com/index.php?title=Main_Page#Instructions_for_Purchase.2FActivation.2FDeactivation As for the ISY99i being discontinued years ago. One of the reasons was. To support the latest Insteon Modules and their new features. The firmware to add them got too large for the ISY99i to hold and process correctly. That is why 3.3.10 was the last update for an ISY99i and eventually you will have a new module and no firmware support for it. UDI bent over backwards to help the ISY99i users for a long time and maybe it was time to let it go. https://forum.universal-devices.com/topic/10001-isy99i-series-3310-is-last-firmware-version/ Edited October 28, 2019 by Brian H Add information
universal1 Posted October 28, 2019 Author Posted October 28, 2019 Tried adding an ISY99i/IR product which is required to transfer module licenses? UDI won't allow serial number from old unit.
Brian H Posted October 28, 2019 Posted October 28, 2019 Before the new system was implemented. UDI use to manually transfer the module if you contacted them. . With the original units UUID and the replacement units UUID. Can't say about the old model ISY99i. As it has been gone since, I believe sometime in 2013.
