I believe I have everything set up properly but when I click test it says Mail Server Failure [Unsupported authentication method]

In the SMTP Settings I left it the way I found it (Use Default was checked)

I'd like to get it working regularly.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Drew

I no longer leave the "Use Default" checked and it seems to be better but I got an alert saying Sign In Attempt was blocked from Google

I've checked the "it was me" tab in the email but now I don't even get a google email warning.

Two things...

1 - upgrade to 4.9 (https://forum.universal-devices.com/topic/31907-release-49-is-now-official/) - That updated the default mail server security settings so should be a little more reliable now. It's automatic update since you're on 4.8. Be sure you're using the launcher too so that FW/UI match after update.

2 - even though you allow less secure apps on Gmail do you have 2FA (two factor authentication - or as Google calls it "2-Step Verification") enabled? If so, do you have an app specific password for the ISY (https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833?hl=en)?

I've used gmail from the start and am on 4.9 and do not have any issues. I'm sending to another gmail account to hopefully not get spam filtered. If you're going off gmail you might be getting filtered too, but if you're having issues simply sending the message then you might need to reset the login and go the extra step of setting up the 2FA and setting an app specific password.

With Gmail (and any free email provider) I would strongly suggest you using a "disposable" account to SEND the notifications. I wouldn't make it part of any primary email you use just to keep the login separate and also to keep the amount of email from any primary account strictly personal and not automation notification that might get the address blacklisted by other ISP/Mail servers.

Hi Geddy,

Thanks for all the tips. I've updated, and turned on 2 factor authentication.

Still getting the Mail Server failure password not accepted (I have the correct password and have double checked it)

I'm not sure what you mean by reset the login and app specific password.

Sorry for being a noob here

@andrew77 sorry for the delayed reply. Wasn't following the topic so didn't know you replied.

My thought was to reset the password for the account just to be sure you've got it accurate.

Now that you've activated two factor authentication you need to have "App Specific" passwords that would be used by the ISY to send mail.

Read here to learn more about that process: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833?hl=en

You will get to a part of the screen that looks like this:

image.png.5d48de78c9e32138b8661d6033d9c333.png

When you click on "select device" use "Other (Custom Name)" and you can type ISY or other identifier in there so you know what is using that app password.  You don't have to type ISY as it will still work without it, but it's good to know what's using the app specific password in case you later want to delete only that password and generate a new app specific password.

Once the password is generated for that account then you'll want to copy the password and setup the mail server for Gmail settings with the user name being the full gmail address (user@gmail.com) and the password being the app specific pass you just generated.

Be sure you check out the WIKI for tips on setting up the gmail account - https://wiki.universal-devices.com/index.php?title=ISY994:Configure_Mail_Server_Settings#Configuring_gmail_Account

One additional tip I would suggest - in the "From" address use the format "name:user@gmail.com" (without the quotes) and possibly use a unique name for that so that you indeed know it's coming from your ISY. (For me I have it as "ISY Alert:user@gmail.com") So I then filter all emails from that on the receiving side so it doesn't get flagged for spam or put in the "important" email, but I still receive it as a normal email on my mobile devices.

Hope this helps some more and gets you up and running if you use the Gmail server.

However, if you updated to 4.9 did you go back to the "use default" setting and did it work? If not, you should open a support case. But, better option would be not relying on their server and use Gmail or other email sever.

Somehow lost my settings in the Email settings for SMTP Settings TAB, and I thought I have set everything back up correctly but still getting a Mail server failure (From timed out)... I have the Timeout(ms) set at 1,000, even tried 1,500 and nothing still errors what is the best setting and how how should I go ?

@Roman

What Firmware are you using? If updated as @Michel Kohanim suggests then the wiki suggests - "For timeout, use 1000 at the minimum. If you are using TLS increase it to 5000 (or more)". And if you're using Gmail it should be at 5000 (min).

https://wiki.universal-devices.com/index.php?title=ISY994:Configure_Mail_Server_Settings

Things to make sure you've adjusted are the SMTP port (try 587), make sure you're using your full email address for the "user ID", and if you have 2 factor authentication activated with the email account you're using make sure you have an App Specific password. If you need help further let us know what you're using to try to send emails.

@Roman, if you're using the Default, please upgrade to 4.9 (if you are on 4x) or 5.3.3 (if you are on 5x).

With kind regards,
Michel

Using version 5.3.0, I guess I will need to upgrade ?

Upgraded firmware to version 5.3.3.. At Timeout 5,000 get Mail server failure (From timed out), at 6,000 same message, at 7,000 same message, 8,000 same message, 9,000 same message... Curious does DNS play any issues with this ?

Below only happened at Timeout setting of 9,000

Update, upgraded to version 5.3.3, and thought let us try using DEFAULT.. test passed, so not certain why my email provider not working.. In Canada using COGECO..

Logged into my webmail account which I specifically opened for the ISY, no issues sending out email to my personal email account.

If default continues to work, I cannot complain.. Yes I can but no one cares LOL

Further update... The Test Emails when switching to DEFAULT, vs using my own outgoing SMTP Server are coming through, however the events that are programmed in are not.. Should I reprogram/reinput the email accounts again ?

@Roman Did you change your port to 465?

From a search:

Outgoing Mail Server
Account Type:    SMTP
Username:    Your email address is your username
Server hostname:    smtp.cogeco.ca
Server port:    465
Authentication:    Password
SSL/TLS:    Yes

Perhaps that will help.  (Otherwise, it looks like port 587 might also work, but I find mentions for both ports working for that ISP)

I'm not sure on this one. Perhaps @MrBill can chime in and help out on this aspect. I would expect that if the emails can send anything you had setup (and working in the past) would start working again as soon as the email server can send out emails. If you just upgraded to 5.3.3 from something 4.x make sure that your programs are active and there aren't any errors or inactive programs that you think should be sending you messages. (I can't help so much as I haven't upgraded to 5.x yet, but I keep thinking about it.)

Maybe check in the email customizations that you leave the "from" blank so it uses the default settings of sending email. I've never used a different address in that line so I'm not sure if you have your @cogeco.ca address in that "from" line and maybe the default web server isn't allowing that setting. Just a hunch, but again, never tried using a different "from" address in the individual notification so a shot in the dark for me.

@Roman and @Geddy

Is there a spam folder?  perhaps email from the UDI default mail server is being categorized as spam.

If set to:

Outgoing Mail Server
Account Type:    SMTP
Username:    Your email address is your username
Server hostname:    smtp.cogeco.ca
Server port:    465
Authentication:    Password
SSL/TLS:    Yes

and email is not going thru, try increasing the timeout.

Also check the ISY error log (Tools > Error log) for clues.

@Roman This cogeco page seems to indicate 587 as the port.

Not certain how I got it working again, but I did reprogram my notification setting and also lowered the Timeout to 4,000, it works.

Here is what I am finding very interesting... TEST message I get nothing but, for my triggers now when I change the value I get an email.

Continue to monitor...

Outgoing Mail Server

Account Type: SMTP

Username is my email address

Password: working for got into the webserver email.

Server hostname: smtp.cogeco.net

Server port: 587

TLS: ticked (yes)

From, I just noticed this must be the same as the username email..

Have you tried not using xxxxxx@Hmail.com and using just xxxxxx for your account name. I am sure that was what was required a one point in time.

ISY needs to report the reported error to the user/programmer. Another thing I found is repeating the same email, or sending too frequently may get you blocked as a spammer.

When I tried just using the name vs email was getting a Timeout error... Never had this issue, and it seems to have started when I upgraded to version 5.3.0

Appreciate the insight, seems to be working now, but what seems to have fixed the issue was me re-inputting the email information into the Notification emails and then I also redid one of the conditions when email would be sent.. Maybe it was the fact I gave the ISY some much needed TLC ??

"Username" is dependent on the email system being used.  sometimes it's the first part of the email address (before the @), sometimes it's the entire email address.  From the cogeco link I provided above they seem to be asking for the entire email address, which is typical when the mailserver handles multiple domains, which most do.  In this case if the first half is working it just means they have designated the second half as a default value.

"From":

image.png.9f4abd00652a85b558a4d75f3f25401d.png

As noted by the asterisk what's expected here is a name:email@example.com

Name doesn't need to be your actual name, I use the word "Home" as in home:email@example.com

As an alternative, you may want to look at using Pushover and the Pushover node server for notifications. I have noticed that the timeliness of e-mail notifications varies. This hasn't pushed me to act ...yet but it is nice to know there are alternatives.

Thank you, what I noticed was I was missing the the complete package when inputting name.. Giving this a try.. Need better glasses for missed the ":" after the name..

Appreciate...

PS.. Why is it when I hit TEST, I get no TEST email using my ISP details, yet emails are coming ?

The test button doesn't seem to be working for me either (also not using default smtp server).

@Michel Kohanim is this a known issue?
